I would believe that these NJB shocks fit your price range very well,
NJB Shocks.

Then there are these Rockshocks which are a little more expensive,
Rockshocks.

Last to name are Betors, the standard ones are really cheap, (at least
when buying them in Spain), only 80€ a pair, looking nearly like the
old one but - well if the price is low they will probably not last
very long - but look contemporary, (should have pic's of them somewhere?).

It depends what you will do with the bike, for just looking good and standig around
the standard Betors are a possibility.

(There are some other models and brands but as you stated your price range
these would be much expensiver.)
:)

I speak from experience!

Betors may be cheaper but you will not get better than the Magical shocks and fork springs.

I rode for a season on Betors and std fork springs.

I studied the market and looked at what the Spanish use and took the plunge.

Woody described the feel as plush and boy is he right, transformed the handling. No bottoming out of the forks and rear suspension just settles and grips before rebounding.

So why buy cheap(funds aside)only to replace with the dogs at a later date!

You pay your money and take your choice!!!

Martin

Me too!

To be exactly I have them both (Betor and Magicals) and yes the Magicals are much better then the Betors they even look better too.

BUT the OP has given a money limit and a pair of good Magicals are twice as much as the OP want to pay. As this is his second Bultaco rebuild, do we know what he want to do with the bike?

I found the pic's that I did not find while writing down my first post in this thread, here all three shocks for a comparison, (in the middle the original ones):

It is also possible to outclass even Magical shocks for around four times as much money the OP want to pay:

Extremly tricky looking and still contemporary and very good working if you use nitrogen as gas are French Fournales shocks, these where used by some world class riders in the beginning eighties, one Bultacos and Italjets (which are the green clones, I had some of them too).

Here the model list from Fournals: Production list Fournales Shocks

The prices, (around 700€ a pair):
price list

The shock mounted on the works bike of Philippe Berlatier of 1984, (there must be somwhere a pic with a Bultaco, ... :

BTW: The bike is for sale, not only fittet with the shocks, even some other trick parts from Fournales are mounted too, Berlatier was fourth in World Championship with this bike in 1984.

Another nice page about Jan-Pierre Fournales the engineer of the Fournales shocks, Mr. Fournals was also technical adviseor for Bultaco as the company was still in business.

Maybe Falcon steel bodied units would be a good compromise. Much better than Betors in performance in my opinion and (I think) about £140 for the steel bodid ones..Ive never tried magicals/rockshocks or maxton.

Hy,

I'm in the same situation.

I'm very happy with my Falcons on the Honda TL 250 and the Magicals look great, but I don't know which configuration would be the optima for my M49 Bulto.

My favourite at the moment would be from Sammy Miller Betor SM Pro Shocks for £150.00 (Inc. 20% VAT UK/EU)
I would take the longer 360mm for more ground clearance and handier angle.
I'm 90kg, don't know wether 40 or 50 lb springs better..probably 40 as the shocks ar almost vertically mounted

Any experience with those on a Bultaco?

regards

Patrick

I had Falcons fitted to my M49 with 60lbs springs and they worked very well.

I'm about 115kg with the riding gear.

I'm 100kg in riding gear and find 50 pound springs are perfect on 360mm Falcons on my M49 which is the early M49 with the more vertical shockies.

I did not intend to be so blunt in my previous posting.

Simply the Magical set up works!

Rear around £200+ front £100+. 2010 prices.

Just talk to Craig at Magicals.

If the Spaniards use them they must be good!

I'm a believer! (Where have you heard the before!).

Martin. Fair few pairs of Rockshocks in use in the Spanish scene too!
