  1. Well I figured out the kickstarter problem. There is an aluminum collar that is press fitted onto the shaft. On the collar there is an indent for the kick start spring. This was not aligned with the kick start spring hole, so it rode up higher on the shaft, causing the whole assembly to be crushed together when the case was bolted down. OK one down, two to go...
  2. OK, well tore the bike down. Here are the findings: Clutch - lever returns nicely to the circlip, then there is some freeplay with the levler (looks good to me) - pulled off the clucth cover and put a dial guage on the clutch stack - as soon as the lever engages the clutch pack starts to move (good thing) - the maximum movement of the clutch pack is .035" (0.89mm) - pulled the clutch pack apart and measured the friction plates they are all about 0.013" (0.33mm) thick - found one issue: the nut holding the basket on was not tight, I was able to turn it off with minimal torque. There was no locking tab either, although I am not sure how one can fit inside. - any idea what the clutch specs are for this bike? Kickstarter - the shaft is loose in the casing, but quite snug in the cover - the cover bore seems OK - I cannot tell if the spring is distorted - not sure what to look for here - when I try to put the case together with the shaft, it is binding somewhat - I put the kick start shaft between to centres (on a lathe) and measured runout on the to bearing surfaces - .001" tops
  3. Awesome Jon, thanks for the info - I will dig into it right away, and post my findings. Don
  4. Hi Guys, I got a few woes with my tired txt 2000 280. (1) Very bad clutch drag. I know it could be anything from master cylinder, to the clutch line, to swollen discs - Suggestions on the easiest diagnosis? (2) BRAND NEW Electric fan is intermittent. It started to overheat, and fan wasn't working, so I jumpered the thermostat in the field - still didn't work. Road the bike a bit, then it started to work. Drove more and it didn't. I guess its either the alternator, regulator, rectifier or the NEW FAN is busted. Suggestions on how to diagnose? (3) The kick starter does not return. I have to return it by hand, and it is a bit of a struggle to return it back to position (i.e. VERY sticky). How do I determine what part is bent? thanks for all the help.
  5. Thanks for the tips guys - I will give them a go!
  6. Does anyone have novogar boots that rub at the outside of the ankle bone? What did you do to fix it? The fold of the boot at the ankle pushes inwards and rubs the crap out of my ankle bone. Only on my right foot.
  7. Oops, found this: http://www.trialspartsusa.com/tech.html
  8. The clutch on my 2000 TXT 280 sot of works, but does not fully engage. Is this simply bleeding? Any tricks? Could it be something more sinister? I currently have 10W30 dino oil in there - would this cause the issue?
  9. Its hard to see the emblem on the mag wheel in your Dad's shop - is that a little horsey rearing up?
  10. Thanks Dave, It looks like the rectifier is gone missing. No biggy, I am sure I can put in a full wave bridge recto and be done with it. I founf thoses wiring diagrams, but they don't list info about the horn, lights, controls etc. There is a group of wires that go to the back shock, But I cannot see what they connect to. There is also a re/black that goes to the rear caliper. Any clue what all this is? thanks
  11. I just got a Gas Gas 2000 TXT 280. The rad fan did not work. I tried to power the rad fan directly with 12VDC, but its DOA. Upon taking it apart I also notice the wiring harness was a bit cut up - missing the connector to the thermostat. Using a wiring diagram I found online, I can locate the ignition module and regulator, but hell if I can find the rectifier. This bike looks like it has a wiring harness for lights, horn, etc. There is a group of wires going to under the carb near the exhaust, but they are the wrong colour - not sure where they are heading. - where is the rectifier physically located? - is there a more complete wiring diagram somewhere that includes the wiring for the lights and horn? thanks.
  12. Well the Synt sold last night - that's fine. I need to think about this a bit. I haven't been to Tansky yet - I tend to like finding things versus track riding. Regardles, I will go just to see it. I'd be happy to take you to the other areas. We are up at eng river this long weekend, but the following weekend we'll probably ride up to the reservoirs. I really want to see Leech falls. We are a couple of noobs, so we just put-put along, not much for single track, but happy to try things as long as we wont break anything. If this works for you, PM me and I'll give you my email. Yeah, my DR350 is the dual sport model, licensed for the street. Although I rarley ride on the street. I have been hit by too many cars. I tend to like being out in the middle of nowhere so the bushes is just fine for me.
  13. Looks like we are neighbours - I am in vic too. Used vic has the Synt: http://www.usedvictoria.com/classified-ad/1992--Beta--Synt--260cc_14828458 I spoke to the guy, sounds like its very well maintained and in good shape. Looks that way from the pics too. I might go out and see it before the long weekend. Not too sure - I am very much on the fence. I go to sooke (Tugwell, Boyds, etc.) and shawnigan. Just poking around on the logging roads and old fire roads, seeing whats up. Lakes, waterfalls, old mines, plane crashes, hikes to mountain tops, etc. Basically I'd ride the trials bike on pure back country stuff, but if there was a chance of being on pavement, I'd ride the DR350. Its plated.
  14. Hi everyone - so I am a total noob to trials. And not much more experienced with enduro either. Really I am just a has been road rider, starting to get out in the dirt. But really I just want a light bike for poking around the hills of west coast BC, Canada. Right now I am doing it on a 95 Suzuki DR350. Its great, but a bit clunky. I dont bash around, I dont jump, I just put-put on the old forest roads and easy single track, exploring for lakes, waterfalls, etc etc. The appeal of a trials bike is too great to resist. So for a second bike I found a 92 Beta Synt, in really nice shape - driven by a little old lady, etc. etc. For about $1600CDN (1200 euro?) - we pay a little more here cause we live on an island. BUT I am a big guy - 6'2" 240lbs. Some of its even muscle. So maybe its too small for me - I dunno. So whatcha all think? thanks!
