  1. Here are some of my Bultaco 199A with a new BUK clutch thanks to all that have helped with setup tips always a great help
  2. Did some online shopping BUK new style clutch plates, push rod and ball, mushroom push rod, pressure plate flat bearing. On stripping the old clutch down found that the push rod was jamming on some thing inside ? The new one has a smaller diameter and moved freely. I had 12 all steel plates, my new clutch has 8 plates 4 steel 4 fibber and lighter springs went together nicely. Did the kick start test no slip and about 50 % lighter on the leaver and no drag very happy. Did a 3 gear blast test and no slip, drive not long enough to open it up in 4th. I also spent some money on a new Dellorto which has so many letters and numbers in its name ........ But when fitted Wow 3rd is now a white knuckle ride, its really smooth from nothing to wide open and seems to like being opened up.... I think it would have been too much for me on my first trial its so smooth off the bottom now and picks up really quickly ( quicker than before with the old carb ) and charges i think i may be over biked. Having said that i did what every has told me to do, take away the tick over and try to get the feeling of the first 1/2 of the throttle hopefully i will get better at that. Anyway its smoother in 1st and 2nd which will make most thing easier for me. I will let you know how i get on at the next event BR will up load some photos later
  3. Thanks for all the feed back, i have been reading the old posts on clutch setup but did not know what to look for but have a better idea now. Hi Boghopper350 yes im happy with my levers now and glad you talked me into keeping them Hi Woody thanks for telling what i should be looking for always a big help. I use your kick start method 1/2 a fast push and she start when warm and 2 full from cold, handelbar turned out the way, levers upside down. Hi Markg thanks for the tips. Hi Bullylover Thanks for the setup tips its a really big help i will set it up just like that, i was thinking the adjusting screw looks a long way in but did not know if that was good or bad. so am i right in thinking that might be the ball is missing. I have a lot to learnThanks again. i got my Dellorto need all new rubbers because mikuni was oversized both sides will fit it for my next event, all my pocket money is going on my bike. BR
  4. Hi Boghopper350 I have been using castrol ATF 300cc I have been readying old post and some say 250cc. what do you find works for you. When i had a look i could not tell if they were all steel or not, we were just looking to see if it looked like it had been hammered or if any thing was lose. Which clutch plates do you have in your bikes Had a great day out it was sunny and dry which was a big help. in the end i left the bike in 1st till the rider in front of me went then started the bike most seemed to keep there bikes running when they were in line. Thanks for you feed back BR
  5. If anyone has time to look at some photos of my clutch setup and how it looks, can you tell from side view if the plates are all steel ? Its just that the clutch drags. and my arms were getting really pumped up waiting for my go at the sections so by the time it was my turn i could hardly hold on to my bike ...... Did spot a few things like the side stand needs a bigger foot and the rear brake is about as good as the one i had on my raleigh chopper but the engine brake-ing is really good and the front brake helped make sure im made the turns at the bottom of the big hill in stead of running every one over who were mad enough to stand in my way. I have just done my first trials event / first ride off road ride in 30 years ( apart from round the garden ) all in the same day. Ho what fun i had trying to get the hang of things again. I did the white route at the local club lots of nice new bikes and some great lads with tips to help me on my first day back. My Bultaco went really well 1/2 a kick to start it when warm. By the last lap i could ride most of the sections. First few laps i was going a bit too slow at first but it was all i could manage. Really i need to trust the force more ...... Ok 2nd gear and my right hand - it kept getting me in trouble on the first laps. but once i could manage 2nd and got better at aim and fire me and my bike out the end cards things changed and i had even more fun. Any way if i can get the clutch working better if not then i will be spending even more time working out .... Thank as always for all the feed back BR
  6. Hi Nelly i will not make it to the next one but will be back again later in the summer. have made some mods to my bike

  12. Hello Woody Thanks for the feed back always a big help, i will email Allens about the new parts and see what happens. Good to know most mikuni flood like this old 70s one or new one can do the same. If it keep doing it am i better to refit a Bing like it had when it left the Bultaco factory ? made me laugh an old 70s mikuni off some old jap road bike, im now wondering which bike it came off

  14. Hello and thanks for all the help with my Bultaco Last time i had a bit of time off i was working on and trying to ride my Bultaco 199A i have a mikuni carb fitted its starts with a few kicks from cold, ticks over nice and pulls smoothly from tick over ..... well that what i think ! the thing is the carb now like to run fuel stright through it if i leave the fuel turned on when its not running. is there any tips for fixing this ? ( i did strip the carb and have a look and all looked ok to me, so pop round to a friends and all looked ok to him to ) so any tips would come in really use full. My carb seems to have the idle screw and the air screw on the same side which make things easy it looks a bit bigger than the ones i have seen for sale but it is a 26mm. All the best BR
  15. Hi Nelly1 Thanks for keeping me up to date, i really hope the club keeps going they have a great team and the venues are spot on. So my fingers are crossed to. All the best Joe
  16. Hi Nelly just found your post. Thanks for posting the youtube link, 2 more videos have been posted, my bultaco is training me ! how to ride again lots of fun. Hard to find some were to play that i do not get shouted at ? things have changed in 30 years So may be back in time for the caves if so i will rent a van and see how i we manage, i think the bultaco will be fine its just me in for a penny in for a pound. BR
  17. Hi Larrynz Would be great to see the Article Fettling your Bultaco when you have time to post it. Thanks BR
  18. One of the funniest things i saw my friend do, well we were some were in wales i think with Denbigh and Mold they always ran some of the best trials my friend had his new SWM the red and white one. Well it was his turn to go first, you can watch other riders but they may be really good and make it look easy, he was riding like a star in the stream but the tricky bit was out of the stream and up the muddy bank , there was this tree with low branches just before the crest anyway he gave it a hand full and shot up the bank found way more grip than he thougth he would and lost the fight just before the tree and hung his new SWM by the handle bar in the tree he was sat on his bum watching it swinging just feet away from the end cards i laugh so hard
  19. Hi Coops My Bultaco goes much better than i do, some friends are helping we with it
  20. Hi Twinnshocks Im sure your tales are good ones, i think i paid £ 160 mine, my dad had a go on it weeks later and said i don't think there is a single bering that is not on its last legs or completely gone, to me it was just magic endless fun. ( Sunny Bank was big old railway siding from the beginning of the railways it had every thing and was well away from most roads and housing they leveled it years ago now its a housing estate. I think mine was a 1971 I got a sherpa hand book with it, i still have it but its for the model after the one i had.
  21. Hi Bondy I think most riders have funny tales of days out with there bikes BR
  22. Hi Pschrauber Thanks for the feed back its always good to get some feed back from you, The older style air box came with the bike i did not understand why it had been fitted but as you say, i was told by other bultaco riders on here to keep it its bigger and better for the engine and will help it to breathe easier. Will fit a mud flap thanks for that tip, it can get really muddy were i ride. I will be ordering some bit for my bike and will get a Amal throttle. All the best BR
  23. At 15 1/2 (summer 75 ) i had mamaged to get a second hand 250 bultaco saturday job and help from my dad. I decied it need a new throttle some one gave me one and i fitted it ...... well i started it and it was wide open and would not shut off so with out even thinking i put the brakes on clicked it into second and let the cluch out ( thinking i would stall it ) even with the brakes on it shot across the yard and i managed to get the front wheel on top of our 6ft wall for just a moment i was almost looking over the wall, we had a ladder laying against the bottom of the wall so i was standing now still had hold of the bike which i was keeping against the wall bike was still trying to get over the wall it would slide down a bit the back wheel would hit the ladder find a bit of grip and shoot back up the wall lucky for me it had a decompresser which i had never really used but it saved the day and it was not to be the last time, when ever i see this photo of me and this bike i think about this tale and one thats just as good if not better ...... Me and my best mate got dropped off by my dad at sunny bank with my Bultaco two 15 year old one Bultaco, one thinks he can ride it the other wants a go ..... My dad tells me do not give mike a go he will hurt him self you know what he is like ..... well he had been asking me all week at school hes much bigger and stronger than me so i was thinking he will be ok so after about an hour of him following me around i found a little path with a very slight up hill ( the thing i did not think of was he needed to stay on the path and he did not ...... ) all was looking good he was standing on the pegs in second gear he went off the path sat down hit a big grass sod compressed the forks they rebounded off the big grass sod he gave it a hand full the back wheel found grip on his jeans climbed up his leg as he let go it found enough grip on his white shirt to fire him back wards in a big W as it went shooting forwards i look at him first ? are you ok he started laughing me to i used the decompresser stop my bike from over reving. The thing was he had a really good rear tyre print on his shirt and it had split his jeans from front to back so you could see all of his under pants he was sat on the floor in a big W and we both could not stop laughing but what were we going to tell my dad when he came back to pick us up we decided to say nothing unless asked. Well we loaded the bike in the van and he just kept looking at us then said to me how could you ride over your mate like that the tyre print was from his jeans stright up his chest to almost his head we started laughing again my dad asked him if he was ok then mike told him about his first ride on a bultaco sherpa Just wanted to cut and pasted this
  24. I think the 199A was the last Sherpa to win the world Trials Championship so it must be the best one
  25. Hi Coops I found 2 they look good i was not sure but i was thinking you were riding with the boys from frodsham. I lived in widnes until i was 18 i use to be in the South Liverpool club in the 70s. I have some good friends and family in Widnes so when i have time i pop back for a few days. I have been rebuilding a bultaco. I have had a lot of fun making pictures and watching the frodsham club trials trying to work out the line i would try to ride. Working on a bultaco again they were always my favorite bike to ride rebuild is going well. its just me that needs more time in the gym now. All the best BR
