Nice bike indeed, and all the more so for still having the original tail silencer as opposed to one of those horrible sounding alloy jobs that they usually have by now.

There are some high quality alloy mufflers out there, such as below.

  2. Hello TC, as others have eluded to, I cannot go back any further than about 2 pages in a multiple page post, it seems fine once I have logged in, previously we could read an entire post from start to finish (maybe across some years) without needing to log in.

Maybe needs a look, we don't want to alienate any potential enthusiasts that might want to get on board. I've only noticed this prob since the upgrade.

  3. Oldaz and Motosolex, you pair have me confused.  Are you both comparing apples with apples, so to speak ?  Oldaz has a 1975 UKR 247 with 168mm (approx) between centre of fork tubes and Motosolex has an early 1980's 349 which possibly has the narrower fork tube spacing which appeared on some models, but I can't remember which years or 348/349 models that was. There are so many variables between a '75 Cota and a '79/ '80's Cota 349 front end, that it's difficult to compare one against the other if you get my drift. I can confirm that the 349/4 Cota returned to the wider 168mm fork spacing but I'm sure at some point previously Montesa experimented with narrower spacings which in turn would have altered hub /spacer/ speedo drive dimensions.

PS: Not to mention the very brittle conical hubs that the 349/4 and 350 wore.

  4. Thanks all for your feedback, I've read enough to decide I will try a 'banana' for myself, it's been ordered and should arrive in about a week. I won't actually have the bike re-assembled and ride able for about another 6-8 weeks as other parts are elsewhere being re-furbed, such as the motor.

  5. G'day Mark, was that a USA bike and does it have an amal carb ?

Do you know the history of the other bike you sold in OZ, it has pinch bolt top clamps and a bing.

Rob and myself are just trying to get an understanding of which type of 199B's may have been exported to certain countries.

  6. Hi David, I'm actually enquiring on Rob's behalf, we're just trying to work out if some left the factory with amals and tapered forks or if some previous owner may have made the changes.

Nearly impossible to know for sure, being so long ago and the state Bultaco were in.

  7. Does anyone know if some markets possibly got 199B's with top triple clamps without pinch bolts, IE: taper fit.

I've seen some conflicting photos, some with pinch bolts and some without. Also some appear with amal carbs and others with bings?

Was it possibly Bultaco throwing anything on them before they shut the door?

  8. Yes I know, but that is what the pair of them are commonly known as, I might alter the subject heading.

Don't think I can now that I've tried, unfortunately the main page doesn't tell you that it's a "Bultaco" question.

  9. I'm re-building a '76 model 183 Sherpa T 350 that has the bigger "clubfoot" shaped muffler which I was thinking of replacing with an earlier style "banana" style muffler, is this a good or bad idea?

Obviously Bultaco put a lot of R & D into those clubfoot's with all those internal chambers and such but, I prefer the aesthetics of the banana muffler as well as it being about 1 kg lighter than the clubfoot (according to inmotion website), but am curious how it effects performance and is it possibly too loud.

Anyone experimented with the two on a Sherpa T 350?

  10. So, is it confirmed that UK has passed? If so he would have only been in his mid sixties I think, that's too early and very sad.

His results that I can see are fairly impressive before and after he became World Champ in 1980.

2nd 1974. (European Championship, before World Title status)

    2nd 1977. (World Championship).

    3rd 1979. WC

    1st 1980. WC

    2nd 1981. WC

  11. 13T /38T. I don't think there are any spacers if you run the 13T front sprocket as it basically envelopes the sprocket to prevent a derailment destroying the cases, mine doesn't have one so can't be 100% sure. I'll attach the parts manuals.

    350TLSWM1983.pdf

    350TLSWM1983-2.pdf

PS: Some of those part numbers are all messed up, front sprocket should be # 29, not #27. You'll see what I mean.

  12. I'm fairly sure that 320/325mm is correct for your model 349. Don't forget that there was 4 x Cota 349 models over the years, they were all a little different from their predecessors

Got to be careful when googling specs that your looking at relevant specs for your model. White wonder and 349/4(350 & MH349) are both very different from each other which in turn also makes them very different from your earlier fibre glass red tank version.

  13. I had considered saddle type attachments like you have suggested but they really are a pain in the a*** when compared to some permanent type fixtures.

That photo attachment is of the last Cota 247 from an Australian magazine in 1979, Cota 247 C i believe.

The manual doesn't show a bash plate for the 247, so wondering if anyone ever made one for the Cota 247 and if so, any pictures?

Bloody good question Oldaz, I've been thinking about the same thing for a while for when I finally extract my finger and restore my '74 black frame 247(clutch lever under).

My thoughts were to weld some home made triangular metal brackets(around 3mm thick) up front either side of the downtube and something similar out back all hidden but flush with the mesh plate with 8 mm nuts welded to these metal brackets. Idea being to make any of these alterations hidden up behind the existing mesh floor of the Cota and then bolt up a 5 or 6mm alloy plate that any half decent fabricator should be able to form for me. The whole setup should only rob me of 5 or 6mm of ground clearance(thickness of alloy plate) which matters little to me as it's only going to be an occasional ride on sections suitable for a near 45 year old bike.

It's all irrelevant now, but the late great Chris Leighfield did offer alloy bash plates back in the day, cannot find any close up pics that show how they were attached unfortunately.

I think I need to change the gas needle valve on my Dell'Orto.  I have a couple of questions:

    • What's the process to change it?  I tried to remove the pin that hold the lever that pushes on the gas needle to no avail...
    • What's the needle size? (apparently there are different sizes!)
    • Does anyone has a good source to get them?
    • How about a standard Dell'Orto rebuilt kit?

     Thanks.

drca, you're too vague, people need more info to help, what model GG do you have?

Surely you're not referring to removing the needle from the slide, if you are, take all the tension off the spring by disconnecting the cable up at the throttle/twist-grip.

  16. Thanks all, Greg that's good info about triangular verse rectangular shock mounts regarding how to pick the different length swinging arms, mines rectangular. Reason for it being bent is anyone's guess really, previously bent shock as you have suggested is a possibility as it came fitted with some unknown brand of Mexican made mx shocks whereas the rest of the bike seems very original right down to the battered alloy mudguards and 860mm wide heavy steel handlebars.

Graham, also many thanks, I'm going to explore the aftermarket alloy swingarm avenue at this point, your experience buying from flea-bay has turned me off that option.

Robido's suggestion is what I'm currently exploring. After much googling I think I have found who Robido was referring to, I believe it is Berry Gamelkoorn who trades as AJG Twinshock Specials. Just waiting for a email response from him in the next day or so.
