Thanks for the comments guys, I do have another bike so I won't be rushed into building this. It does have a box of bits although I'm still missing, rear gaurd, seat, air box and carb. I'm probably looking to go down the majesty route, it's not the cheapest option but the bike practically stands me at nothing, and I'll get just as much enjoyment out of building it as I will riding, although I won't be making it do the same kinda stuff as my Scorpa does.

Today I purchased an old and unloved TY175 from a friend. He's had the bike about 18 years and back when we were young and stupid we used to ride it around his field, and occasionally on the back roads near his home. It was taken apart about 12 years ago by him and was left in the same spot until now. Its going to take me lot of time, and money but I'm hoping to get this bike looking great again and hopefully do a couple of trials on it. I'm unsure on whether to restore, modify to majesty frame or make a modern twinshock with discs at the moment but its not something I'll be rushing into just yet.

Unfortunately I learned the hard way and had 3 bikes stolen last year, I don't feel the locks and chains which were cut was a problem and have now invested more in alarm systems. If they want it, they'll take it. But they'll make a hell if a lot of noise first.

I had a look at mine today whilst cleaning it. The spacer is approximately 18mm between the bearing and disc gaurd. Will upload a pic later when I'm on the comp.
-
As Breagh says, the sleeves should come out pretty easy as should be a moving part against the bearing. The best way to remove the bearing imo is to insert a socket roughly the same size or a tad smaller than the outer edge of the bearing, and a large socket on the other side, then push the small socket through using a vice. It maybe tight at first but once it's starts moving it'll pop out no problem.

Don't forget the yam engined Scorpa's. Great build quality, bulletproof yam engine, can be picked up cheap and very easy for a novice/clubman rider. Ive learned more on mine in the last 12 months than I did on my last gassa in 3 years !
-
Breagh is pretty much right. There is 1 spacer which slots into the bearing in the disc side, and the disc guard itself is also used.

When I got my bike it had a reg plate on, I did a dvla check and it came back unregistered, at a recent event someone advised me it was from the isle if man. After a quick call to the isle if man post office, they confirmed it was registered over their. I printed a log book application, a notice of export, and attached a cheque for

swinging arm bearings are listed further up the thread, wheel bearings changed maybe 02 or 03 I think so would have to know what year your bike is. I work for a bodyshop so silver engine casings was just done at the same time a silver car was been painted, The plastics were re-done in Ford Frozen white before stickering. Mine also has slightly different forks to the 02 > models so I used one of the many guides on here to for the early sherco and gassa paoli fork set up.

Just thought i'd update the thread with some recent pics. Just got to fit the new style bash plate and the jobs done.

I don't think you can go wrong with the build quality on a Beta or Scorpa,
-
Just fitted mine and stuck a few stickers on them. Very happy and it'll keep my fork legs clean from scrapes

Hi Jon0881,
Would be good to see your motor and any upgrades you've done to it ?
Swing arm bearings are HK2030, Seals 26x20x4 (Outer x inner x width). I couldn't find the sleeves available anywhere so they've gone back in for the moment. Decals are on order from Express Signs on ebay, he did advise me there would be a delay as he's pretty busy at the moment.
-
I appreciate your concerns with the stainless bolts guys, I use a marine grade grease and torque them up as suggested. I've changed for stainless if I've had them available and never had any issues in the past.
Today has been spent replacing the swing arm bearings (I have the number if anybody wants it message me) and seals. Refitting the swing along with shocker and newly painted coil spring. Also finished off my LED headlight, doesn't look much different at the moment but will upload more when its lit.
My decals aren't going to arrive for a few weeks so the plastics will have to wait as I want to use it next weekend and get some practice on it.
Bearings requiring changing
progess !

ive also just made some fork covers using 50mm plastic water waste pipe. Will upload a pic when my bikes back together. Very simple, cheap and effective.

I though id upload some pics of my tatty 2001 SY before and through the re-furb . I purchased this bike cheap from ebay this summer after my last SY was stolen back in spring. It looked very tatty but sounded sweet and was all I could afford at the time. I have ridden in it in a few events through the summer and now while theres a break in the calendar I thought i'd pull it apart and get it looking a bit nicer and do a bit of routine maintenance at the same time.
Parts changed:
Wheel Bearings F+R
Tyres F+R
Fork Seals
Air Filter
Fitting Gas Gas Pro Side Stand
Many rusty bolts for stainless
I'm still in the process of changing the swing arm bearings, painting the clutch casing, engineering a FLAT bash plate, fitting up LED front scorpa light and renewing the decals to something a bit newer.

I recently had 3 trials bike stolen from my garage which is attached to my house, it was only when reporting the claim I was made aware that any motorised vehicles would not be covered by the policy, and to check the t&c's. It's worth checking your insurance guys as you'd be surprised how many companies will not actually cover your bikes. I'm in the process of renewing my policy but haven't found a provider who is willing to insure any bikes as yet.

Although i started riding trials years ago, im only just getting back into riding after a 5 year break for the sport. It was boxing day of last year when i went to watch my local Manchester 17s Boxing day trial that i decided that the bikes were to be cleaned of cobwebs and once again ridden. So in January this year, i dusted of my old mans 99 Gassa 250, and my brothers 03 Rev3 270 and took them out for a ride accompanied with my old man. After a half hour we were both knackered and heading home as the gassa was giving us problems. After a top end rebuild, the bike completly stripped, cleaned and plastics painted ( i work in a bodyshop) and new decals i had full confidence in the bike and was well up for riding again. After a couple of rides i decided it was the Beta's turn for the same treatment as the mains were sounding terrible and the bike just looked old and shabby. Engine out, mains renewed, and i managed to pick up a full set of 04 plastics off fleabay at a good price, the bike now looks and sounds the part ! The only problem being my younger brother has now moved back home and decided he would also like to get back into the sport.
After a couple of trials riding the gassa with my old man watching from the sides i decided that i was to have a bike of my own once again. I have ridden Gas Gas for years and althought the build quality isnt that great, ours had never given us much trouble, and ride great. I just cant seem to get on with the Rev3, it looks good, plenty of power, good build, but just doesnt ride how i want it to, and when i get off an old gassa onto the Beta it feels like a jump backwards in time ! I decided that i was going to have a Scorpa SY, completly on a whim and the hope that it will be good !
After scouting the local ads and ebay for the past few weeks i found a 02 SY, local which looked tidy at a good price. after the usual messing around with offers and ebay messaging, i agreed to view the bike with intent to buy. I set off Saturday, with a borrowed van and cash in my pocket, only to receive a call from the seller who is now advising me that he has got to nip out and will leave somebody with the bike and docs for me to view, 10 mins later he calls again to advise he has just tried starting the bike and the carb must have some muck in it as it wont run very well, although he is negotiable for this. at this stage im not very happy, but being nearly half way there i decide to carry on regardless. When i get there and look at the bike, its really tidy. Starts her up and i hear the mains rumbling a bit, although it wont run for long enough for me to check properly never mind ride it to see how it feels. I check the to docs and find its actually a road reg'd 04 bike, with lights, spares, all reciepts, datatags and logbook. This is good news by now as im looking for a reason to take this bike home with me. After much negotiation and foot stamping, i started loading up my new bike along with a pair of boots and helmet he has thrown in along with change in my back pocket, i set off back home a happy man.
Stripped the rear end off, clean plug, and adjust needle and i have a bike that runs. It will need the float hieght adjusting at weekend as it stalls very easy when stood upright and needle is at its highest point, its just not getting enough fuel as it needs. Im hoping to ride the bike this weekend before taking on the mains and plastics later this month so im back running for boxing day.
Ive added a couple of pics so you guys can see. i do need a little help on a couple of things. the bike has 08 tank stickers on at the mo and im not sure if the mudgaurds and frame colour is right for the year if somebody could advise ? Also if anybody has done the mains and knows of the bearing number it would be much appreciated as this will save me lots of pennies compared to genuine parts. The side stand is pretty rubbish ? is there anyway of making this any better ?
