  1. I’m noodling around with potentially switching my 2021 4RT to a new 2022 Evo Factory 200.

Only ride 1-2 times a month in club trials.

What I love about the Montesa is the reliability, build quality, ease (except oil filter change…) of routine maintenance and (of course) the sound at full bore. And hard to stall in sections at 1800rpm tickover. The other big (big) selling point is the resale on the 4RT. I had my last one for 5 years and literally sold it for £1500 less than I paid for it new. The weight doesn’t bother me either as it’s really planted and I’m not bouncing the thing around or anything!!

Onto the Beta. I love the look and style. But will it disappoint me on reliability, build quality and resale? I’m sure it’ll be sweet as to ride, but the above points are really important to me. I need to be able to ride occasionally, clean/basic maintenance and then fire up first kick next time around.

Thanks in advance for any views - especially from anyone who’s made a similar move.

  2. A 180 degree gear lever change sounds more than weird. Should be a quick 10 degree click. The ‘70’s/early’80’s mechanics are pretty straightforward with a workshop manual but do shout on here for the best oils and spares. Best of luck and enjoy your Montesa!

  3. 2021 4RT. The pointy bits (if you have one you’ll know) of the graphics are lifting. Only a tiny bit. What’s the best remedy and/or glue? Obvious option would be superglue but I don’t want residue which is impossible to remove!

    Any ideas much appreciated.

The rider who spots anyone who is near the front,  starting a vague conversation with them then feeding in next to them as the que moves forward, of course being English I say nothing while quietly comparing him to Putin in my head

So true. And we’re all too polite being English!!

  5. I had 3 brand new 315s back in the day (not all at once!) and loved them - especially the build quality although I personally got on better with a 311 a few years earlier (no idea why as most folk slated them).

Like you I was looking for an older 2T to supplement (if that’s the correct term for adding more the collection!!) my new 4RT a couple of years back and looked at a couple of 315s. In the end I couldn’t quite work out what this would actually be for and went for a TY175 which has been great fun, plenty of parts etc available and with the benefit of being able to enter different types of classes/events.

Off subject I know, but a decent twinshock is a fun change and easy to tinker with.

  6. We’re all (in Blighty at least) too polite to call out queue jumpers. But it is so annoying.

Which queue jumping tactics rile you most (unless you are a queue jumper yourself…).

    My top three…

    1. Get to front of queue and park bike for a quick look at section then casually nip back in.

    2. Steam into front of queue to chat to a mate. Then casually nip back in.

    3. Pretend bike has an issue. Then casually nip back in.

    Etc. Etc.

It sucks and those who do it 100% know they are doing it (even if casually!!).

I have a 2020 repsol, i have never ridden a previous year, but the engine breaking is only slightly more than a 2T,as in virtually none, the bike has been great but had a torrid time in thick clay mud,the lack of ability to find grip was frustratingI tired gear 1-3rd,off the throttle cluch, revin the tits off it then trying to grip when shutting the throttle, grip was like ice. overall the bike is bloody awesome, I'm thinking about getting some set back footrests, apparently this can help with grip, maybe an IRC rear tyre.

This is definitely covered in other parts of the Montesa forum. When I got my first 4RT about 6 years ago (after a 12 year break but had always ridden 2Ts) I had a nightmare on slippy banks with no run up. The “rev it nuts and it’ll dig in just didn’t seem to work” and easy to spin out. Somewhere on the Montesa forum  someone described the technique to drive it like a tractor - so much smoother versus on/off 2T approach. Worth looking for the views as they were really helpful for me at least. Good luck!

  8. Million percent get new tyres. I had some aged ones on one of my bikes and it was totally fine in the dry but an absolute nightmare when I entered the first trial in mud (spinning out and fiving on the easiest muddy banks pretty embarrassing). Changed to new tyres - Michelin at the front and an IRC at the back end and rode another muddy trial. Amazing!

Change the tyres. £200 well spent.

  9. Just jumping in with (probably) no constructive help!

Loving that you’ve got Scoots - I’m on the lookout for another (had a Rally 200, a properly tuned AF Lambo and a Luna in previous decades/centuries). The Rally’s are going for about £8k now which is nuts (mine was £180 in 1980…).

I wouldn’t ditch the current bike but try and get to a practice ground that you can get more of a feel for it.

The TY175 is awesome and loads softer (and a good investment right now) - you won’t lose money if you buy one now and spares are easy.

Do private message as needs - fairly local and have new/old bikes.

nb. I bought a TY175 from Julian Wigg Motorcycles in 1981 - it was my main mode of transport for a year. Brilliant shop back in the day!
