  3. R40 is available on ebay for less than a tenner a litre. But probably not ideal for trials. However if you just want the smell, add a spoon full to the petrol should do it Years ago, when I was a smoker I had a Zippo lighter with a small amount of R40 in the fuel. It was great every time I lit a fag the whole place smelt like a classic TT race

  5. I checked with SMP (Where I bought the shocks and got the following reply: Hi – If they were purchased within the last 4 years they can be mounted either way up. Regards So its all good

I suppose they could go they other way up, yes it would decrease un-sprung weight and, of course increase sprung weight, but on a 1973 Cota that ain't gonna make much difference, well not to me anyway But the image on the web site is this way up and the writing on the shock would be upside down the other way Plus I think they would "look" upside down, I like 'em as they are
  7. Thanks guys, Shocks are these: clicky link thing I don't know if they can be mounted upside down, why would you want to? I made the chain guard, because I couldn't find one, and the mudguards were generic which were modified to suit Because they were £70 the pair and proper Monty ones are £130 each!

  9. Well you should never say never! It came off, hoorah! Thought I would give it one last go, used a fully charged battery on the impact gun, just held it on there for ages, then whack! with the hammer on the end and pop Very pleased If anyone would like to borrow the special cup I've had made,which allows a bigger puller to be used, just let me know..
  10. This primary gear is never going to come off. I started with a small puller, broke it trying, got the gear very hot and used freeze spray. Not a chance. Then I had a steel cup made so I could use a bigger puller, tried with a 10tonne hydraulic puller, nothing. This morning I was determined, I've borrow a monster puller, an impact gun, using heat and brute force, still nothing. I give up, the only way this nis ever going to come off is with a cutting disc! Its a shame, because unless I can change the crank seal, the engine is scrap.
  11. OK, to answer my own question. Well yes and no, the shaft itself is different lengths for different models, the Scorpion has a short shaft the 349 is about 20mm longer and the 247 in the middle. All the surrounding mechanism parts for the gear change are the same, just the shaft length is different.
  12. Hi guys, This shaft and its surrounding parts looks the same as other models, its the left hand change version from about 1974. But if you look up other models, like the 200 and the 349 and even the Scorpion from a simlar era, they appear to be the same. Are they interchangeable?

Best way is to seal the tank against ethanol laced fuel, apparently some BP stations in the south still sell ethanol free petrol, but its rare and going to get worse as they introduce even more bio into our petrol. Even the additives break down after a while, I've never come across anything that works that well. I store my bikes dry if possible. Ethanol in fuel can even start gumming up the carb in just a few weeks, and can be a git to clean out of the very small jets. But to stop it attacking the tank, use POR15 to seal the tank. Best way is use thinners and some old nuts to wash it out, be careful with thinners if you have a plastic tank, shake it until your arms are dropping off, then do it again. Coat it with POR15 then leave to dry, as the sealer dries it can sometime run down into the tank, so I use a computer fan on the tank to dry it out quickly, keeping more of an even coat inside.

  16. Names Dave, now live in Shropshire, but from Kent originally. Trialed an Ossa 250 back in the late 1970's, also Bultaco for a while. Been road racing since then. However a big get off at Donnigton a few years ago, has put that on hold (Never say never though). So, bought an old Montesa twin shock, for a go at some trials after 35 years Sent my application to the ACU and South Shropshire MCC. Should be fun Also into restoration and special bike building, racers mostly, but also have a flat tracker 125
