  1. Hi Electronic ignition is the best, it really is, I have it on my Sherpa, top drawer, first kick all day. But I have a Monti 247 with points and original electrical system that works fine, so I haven't yet spent the money on an electronic system. First thing is new points (£15) and to mount a new condenser (£6) next to the coil away from the original position. Check, check check the wiring is sound, there is no continuity, so don't be fooled. This also makes the timing more difficult, but spend some time measuring it properly, I have 2mm (20 degrees) BTDC, but its hard to get that exactly right. The next is the carb, mate you cannot clean this properly enough, use thin wire, micro drill bits and thinners, old oil and neglect, even modern fuels will clog up the carb. Make absolutely sure all the holes, inlets etc. are clear, then do it again ?. My Montesa 247 will start every time first or second kick, but I do need to run her regularly as modern fuel is a bitch, I have a number of bikes, and I'm still in two minds about spending the extra for electronic ignition on the Monti (Which I don't ride often), if it was my only bike and the one I rode all the time, I wouldn't hesitate.
  2. Nice bike! Great to see you persevered and worth it in the end
  3. There's not a grain of truth in that
  4. OK, I remember, that was quick No stripping down is required. The bolt that holds the spring in place, actually its a stud with a nut on it from the outside. Well inside the engine the stud head has to fit into a set position. Its possible to tighten this nut up from outside but inside its slightly in the wrong place, causing the kick start shaft from fully returning. Loosen the nut and turn the stud, you will know when its right because more thread is exposed. This fixed it. Good luck and let us know.
  5. Good news and bad news I had this problem, and it was an easy fix. I just can't think of it right now. Thats helpful Something wasn't quite put back right, I'll have a look at the bike to see if it will jog my memory.
  6. I have an Electrex World electronic ignition on my Bultaco Sherpa, it is excellent and I can highly recommend it
  7. Just checked mine. White and black to earth at the coil Red to the coil, with the condenser from the coil feed and earthed, at the coil. (Make sure condenser has been removed from its original position behind the flywheel) Whether yours is wired the same, I've no idea, but that is the way mine is Mine will have electrex world electronic ignition if I am to keep it, which is in the balance as I have my eye on a new bike
  8. Found an image I borrowed the puller, but I still have the adapter as pictured.
  9. OK, let us know how it goes. It is a proper b'stard to get off.
  10. I made a machined part which fits over the primary drive and allows a large puller to "Grab" it. Similar to the one pictured but more chunky. You are welcome to borrow it, I did have some images, but I can't find them, you'll have to use a puller, but even a monster puller fits using this adaptation.
  11. Great job! Hard work and loads of time and money right there. Worth it though, good to see
  12. Phase two now completed Mikuni carb Electronic ignition wider foot rests "raced up" with some stickers and carbon front plate Xlites Decompressor Plastic mudguards Starts first kick, runs as sweet as a nut Just need a free weekend and we're away, ready to roll! :
  13. Completed phase one of the Sherpa project. Phase two will see some mods for actually competing on her
  14. Thanks for your help guys. Just fitting the kick start itself seemed to cure the issue, probably because it slightly holds the shaft out? Anyway all seems good to go
  15. As the engine turns over there is a very pronounced "click" from the kick start mechanism. Its the ratchet mechanism clicking, like when the kick start returns. My question is, this seems a bit harsh, surely the bike will sound like a football clacker when it runs? I'm pretty sure I have rebuilt the engine properly, the kick start shaft is in the exact same place as it was before, but I didn't test it. Do I have to strip the whole lot down again to change something? A common issue? Edited to add: Sherpa 250 T 1978
  16. I've just put the clutch back together after fitting new main seals, etc. When setting the tension on the clutch springs, how far do I tighten the nuts? I have assumed the tops of the pins and nuts are level, but is this about right?
  17. I will be riding competition twinshock trials. Only comparison is with the original set up.
