  1. Nothing new there... sounds familiar to everyone(well except a lucky few)  practice and confidence. It will come but takes longer than many people think. When you gain confidence you will be less tense, allowing bike to move under you and respond with little movements to correct things. Watch other people’s body positioning and ask someone to watch you and see if anything you need to change.

  2. Can’t comment specifically on your bike, shocks make big difference in how bike feels grips and responds over the ground. I’m assuming you need to replace as old ones aren’t up to it. Budget will play a part, if you want to spend the most then probably rockshocks, I’ve never used them but been very happy with njb ultimates on a bsa c15 and Fantic and falcons, but have betor on a bike now and again happy with them. Most companies now make them different lengths  and with spring rates to suit rider.

  3. My experience at 53 when started was modern two stroke, as I’ve mentioned to you before I went to 4 stroke and much prefer them, but that’s personal preference. I bought aBSA C15 and spent money on improving it. Big heavy old lump but my smile was twice as big when rode that.

    Then a very well sorted 240 Fantic was next. Very good bike but never gelled with it, just wasn’t to my liking so sticking with 4 stroke I bought Honda tlr. Absolutely love it love riding on it working on it and just looking at it. From an enjoyment point of view it’s my favourite bike.

    Plus points, fun factor and smile,love the look and feel of the older bike, call it nostalgia or mid life crisis I don’t care it’s all about fun for ME and I’m happy.

    Down side, have to be selective which venues I would ride as some venues I would find too much on the twinshock. Better riders wouldn’t but I just want to have fun and not progress up the levels.Twin shock and classic trials are great fun and modern events where course is suitable. A lot might depend on where you are, are there many events where easy course is good for twinshock.

    I would maybe suggest upgrade your modern bike get plenty of trials under your belt and just enjoy it for a while, then see how twinshock appeals and try it, after all 2 bikes are better than one. You might use both at different events but give yourself a chance to see what appeals most.

  4. I don’t agree re 4T being to much for beginner, but as I mentioned earlier 4T isn’t something everyone takes to. Some try it and love it but some go back to 2T. I had a 2017 250 rr TRS and it was great. Suspension and brakes were noticeably better than Beta....BUT did I ride better, no because the differences were way better than I needed or was able to use.

    If I wanted a modern 2 stroke as 57 yr old who doesn’t want or need to hop round or launch up huge steps, I’d go back to 250 beta without doubt. Everything I would need and more. Slow action throttle if you need and/or drop a tooth at front. Yes 200 is fantastic but 250 is perfectly manageable, you just learn good throttle/clutch control.

    Look at what youngsters can do on a 125! So a 125 would be enough. But I prefer feel of 250, like the bottom end and don’t need to rev it. As for sticking with rev 3, again it’s a bloke thing...I don’t NEED the toys on my car but does it feel good, yes and nothing wrong with feeling good by having a newer bike. 

    I feel better on my favourite bike so even if I don’t ride better I enjoy the day more and that’s big part of it for me. The enjoyment 

    Its a very hard thing buying a bike based on advice as we all like different things for different reasons, once you have the bug to change it’s almost impossible to resist

  5. The Amal is similar in effect to fitting slow action domino on 2T. I’ve never bothered measuring  the degrees of turn but the Amal will have a slightly bigger range of movement. To be honest it’s never been an issue to me, full throttle, if needed is still easy. It certainly takes the snap out of the initial surge but part of that may of been the snatch of the Beta clutch. Plenty of people cope with the standard throttle but I much prefer the Amal

    If you look at the pulley, cam, wheel with cable in part on the carb you will see there is a second hole cut out identical to and very close to the one in use. If you fit an Amal the nipple just swaps to the other hole and the cable tension is spot on. No need to change cables. I can only vouch for that up to 2018 but very much doubt carb has changed? 

  6. 4T riding style is a bit different, although less so at lower levels, but not light and day different. Less reliance on clutch slipping, the Beta just plonks along beautifully. A steady throttle needed in mud, not blipping looking for traction like a 2 stroke can where you feel for grip. Once you  loose it on 4T it’s harder to get back. But with a steady throttle it will grip beautifully. The power comes in very progressively and a BIG improvement if you want smooth steady power delivery is to swap standard throttle for an Amal 80/200 body. Very easy, straight swap, at the carb end you just swap the nipple into the “other” hole next to one it’s in now. Personally it’s my favourite modern bike. The 250 was actually a bit underpowered many thought, 300 is docile enough until you open it right up. 3004T certainly won’t be too much for you

    Ive had 3 and never had any maiitanence issues, you will need to learn the knack of starting them when hot if you stall. Yes 4rt is very well made and reliable but I think Beta rides better, it will just chug along on tickover.

    If you get one give it time, not everyone takes to it straight away. Good idea to try first if you can.

     

  7. 4t is quieter, it’s a less “offensive” sound to many people, maybe not the best way to describe it. It’s less. 2 strokey 😂 The beta is quieter to the ear I think. Definitely more of a low down torque feel particularly at the easier end of trials when you don’t need big handfuls of gas to get up and over everything. Less revving and slipping of clutch needed for general riding with 4t until you start doing more expert style riding.  Personally I love the engine braking.

  8. Beta evo 3004t is the smoothest powered bike I’ve ever owned. Very quiet with linear power, loads of bottom end and power builds very  smoothly. Montesa owners will tell you the build quality is excellent, I agree although never had any issues with either of my Betas, both are very good if you like the way a 4 stroke rides.  Try one first as the riding style is different and not everyone takes to a 4stroke

  9. Was it running ok previously or has this just started. These bikes have a poor petrol tap. They can become very stiff to fully open, always a possibility that the tap isn’t functioning. Had to replace one on my sons for exactly this reason

  10. Thinking of replacing rear shocks on my TLR 200, currently has aluminium betors 395mm. Length seems fine but I’ve had Falcons and NJB ultimates on Fantic and really liked the NJBs

    Just wondering if anyone has the Falcon long bodied ones they make for the TLR or rockshocks fitted to give opinion on those thanks

  11. Air in system, leak etc usually causes a spongy brake, one thing to check first, if brake is normal for a while before it fades is that the brake isn’t binding while riding. Even a little bit would cause heat, brake fade is when brake works fine then fades as brake fluid boils due to excessive heat. Normally on very heavy prolonged braking but I had a calliper seize causing one side to press on disc and heat it up. Brake then started to fade on use before it seized. Just worth checking wheel spins freely and brake works/releases

  12. As mentioned above, check for crud in the tank, had a bike once that did the same as flow was restricted due to an in tank fuel filter being partially blocked with debris

  13. Almost certainly the stator, Beta seems infamous for them, although in fairness they don’t last forever 

    worth trying a coil from another bike to check spark or get yours tested but if no spark best bet is to send stator away for rewind. Not that expensive

    , check out westcountry windings, Bradford ignitions or trialssport beta stator rewinding 

  14. Assuming you want a modern bike, at that price condition is more important than make. Avoid anything that’s cheap because it’s in need of tlc, you could spend too much money and time on it. Obviously they will all have marks on them but check engine noises, brakes wheel bearings etc. I’d suggest a bike you can view rather than something off eBay that could turn out to be a pig.

    As first bike don’t go above a 250, more than enough for trials, certainly initially. Older bike but a good montesa 315 could be a good bike, very reliable and hold their value now

  15. I’ve had similar for two years, tennis elbow, pain down top of forearm when gripping. Rest  from riding during lockdown hasn’t cured it. I might of had a dodgy physio but the exercises he suggested did nothing so I’m waiting for a different one.. I’ve recently tried using kinesiology tape (rock tape) and if applied as per the videos it does help symptoms. Injections may just mask the symptoms but not help to heal it, worth speaking to sports physio.
