  1. I bought Chris’s SWM last fall! He is riding a Yamaha now. Like I said the bike is in great shape and works awesome just as it is! He has it set up well. The clutch is a little stiff but not bad and I might need higher bars or bar risers, I’m 5’11”.

    SWM Modifications

I got into vintage trials a few years ago, I always wanted a SWM! When I was a kid SWM trials where the bike to have! I didn't have one then but almost 40 years later I finally bought one! I really like them! They handle great and the brakes even work! I enjoy them as much as the modern trials bikes I had! I actually ended up with four over the summer, (sold the 240 to a friend of mine). I have a 1980 TL320 that's my main bike, I bought from the top rider from our club, he also won the AMA National twin shock series in 2013 on the same bike! I also have a 1982 TL 320 practice bike that runs good but needs work and a 1980/81 TL 320 that needs rebuilding. I'm wondering what everyone is doing for modifications? I really like my bike and just curious of improvements. I already used a different clutch lever with different leverage, new clutch cable, installed electronic ignition (works awesome! See Martin at MotoSWM)! Betor gas shocks. I have a newer Can Am clutch cover with the 12mm balls for the clutch actuator that I might install this winter. Thanks, Ash

    80 TL320 Seat

I probably can make something to work.
  6. Sorry no pictures. I didn't get a lot of time to work on it, but I finally finished it. The bushings took some work to press in, but I made the ball joint press work. I think next time I'll just take it to a shop.

    80 TL320 Seat

I got a hold of Martin from Motoswm and he said my bike probably originally had a metal tank.

    80 TL320 Seat

looks like you have a bracket that the spring catch slides into welded to your frame. Mine doesn't look like it ever had anything welded to it.
  9. I had a few minutes today and got the other bushing out. I found a piece of round stock and used my press and some heat, it came right out!
  10. I I'm going to try using my 12 ton press next, I think I came up with a way to press out through the other side. Otherwise I'll cut it out like the first one. I think I can use the ball joint press to press the new ones in. The new bushings are in the freezer and I will heat the swingarm before I start pressing the new ones in.

I will have to get the straps.
  12. Someone suggested a ball joint press. I barrowed one but still didn't have any luck pressing the old one out.

    Finding SWMs

I know there has to be more SWM trials bikes than enduros. I remember the TLs were popular around here (New York State) back then.

Is this on a bracket that screws to the frame or is it welded? Can you post another picture? Thanks

    80 TL320 Seat

Here is what I have. Looks like I have everything except the rubber straps in the back. I'm not sure what mounts the seat/tank to the hole in the frame. I know the rod with the rubber washer goes through it but what holds it? Thanks

    Finding SWMs

I have been wanting a SWM trials bikes since I was in high school in the early 80s. I got to ride a 81 TL 320 for a day and really liked it. It handles as good as some of the modern trials bikes I have had! Has awesome power and torque! I felt very confident on the bike. It took me a long time but last year I finally found a 80 SWM TL320. It's in rough shape needs a complete rebuild, I probably paid way too much and it's still not finished. When it's finished it will be my main trials bike for vintage trials. I would like to find another TL for back up also an Enduro GS SWM for vintage cross country. Where do you find these bikes? I look on Craigslist, eBay all the time. I never have even seen a SWM Enduro around here.
  21. I bought a 1980 SWM TL320 last year that was in need of a lot of work. I'm fixing it up to compete in vintage trials. I'm replacing the swingarm bushings and have had a heck of a time just removing one bushing. Anyone have a better way to remove and replace these bushings? I have a few different ideas but thought I would ask here for some advice. Thanks
