That sounds like moisture in the system, I had a car that was doing something like this and it was water in the lines.  I had seen some strange issues like this when air in the lines as well, however not quite as random as your describing.

I would first flush/clean everything out double checking no air or water in the system and then if you continue to get the issues let us know how that works.

How to double check for air or water in the line?? just bleeding and replacing oil, basically?

Brake fluid is expanding because it is getting hot causing lack of freeplay......check your adjustment of the lever has enough freeplay as per manual check that the master cylinder is not overfilled...check your pads are releasing properly and not dragging against the disc[lightly dragging is normal..I mean causing the wheel not to spin easily] when the lever is released.

This has just been on here in a post by zippy ...it turned out that his front wheel bearings were binding causing heat that dissipated in the disc to pass to the fluid through the pads and calliper pistons.

Funny you said that because yesterday was 90º and when I pulled the bike out of the shed the front wheel was literally stuck. and there was no free play at all! I had to adjust the lever to give some free play and while I was riding, the second time I went to use the brake, it was gone! I almost had to squeeze my fingers to make it brake, calling for another adjustment. How can I prevent it form getting hot? Is it possible, I might have air in the line?  Interesting about the front wheel bearing, but since mine was stiff even before ridding I doubt it would be my case, correct?

    Thanks again

  3. For the past 2 weeks my front brake has been hardening all of sudden. It loses all the free play before it brakes or it will brake just by touching the lever. I have to adjust the levers to get a little travel before brake engages and then while riding, all of sudden it comes back and I end with extra travel of the lever and have to re adjust again. This been happening over and over! any thoughts???

  4. Any owners out there?? Can I get some feedback. It's on the top of my list for next bike.

Whats the deal with rear fenders that break easy? Is it real?

And is the old cold drag gone?   Thanks

  5. Hello all.

looking for and input from someone familiar with the differences.

Here is my dilemma : I currently own a 2017 Gas gas contact 250 that I bought brand new and am looking to upgrade to a (undisclosed manufacture)  factory 300. lets not get into the brand argument or personal preferences and just assume all brands are suitable for my riding style.

I was told by one specific dealer that I should not by a 300cc. that it would be too much power for me , let alone a factory edition.

here is where I stand: I m a 38 y.o. guy in very good athletic shape 6'2"  235lbs (115Kg) . I have been riding trials for 4 months only but there is a  catch. I use to be a BMX rider for over 10 years (most likely advanced level). so my progression seems to be faster than normal. here is a little summary of the skills I have accomplished.

I can carry on wheelies (sitting or standing) for pretty much as long as I want in 3rd gear up. I can carry on in 2nd or first gear for many yards

use of front brake and rear wheel hop are coming along. I can carry on stopies for 5 -7 yards or so. hop the rear wheel without engine.

Double blip and Jab Zap successfully 100% of the time on obstacles up to 3 feet. Splats are ok if I have a flat surface to land the bike after. I still can not do a stationary Zap.

Balance in most surfaces and with front wheel against objects (tress/ rocks etc...)

have not figured out flip turns.  70 to 90 degree Floater turns on incline 50% successful.  90 degree pivot turn against tree 1 out of 4 tries.

I can front wheel hop about 15 times of so but did not figure out how to move the bike as I do. only in the same spot

that should be plenty of info!!  I think 300cc would make easier for some skills like zaps and splatters but I have never ridden one. and I m not completely sure what is the difference between factory vs standard, other than lighter parts.  Would I be making a mistake buying a 300 factory?   Thanks all

Check your rear disc's runout... it is not a 'Floater rotor' It may be bent......if it is not,but squeaks[ including the rear suspension] and it bothers you; then take the parts that are squeaking to bits and clean and lube what needs cleaning and lubing........ it really is that simple....forget what it says in the owners manual about servicing things ....[ which you did not get for some bizzare reason with your new contact].

Depending on the type of use..frequency of use....conditions of use etc etc means that following the servicing in the manual is just a very rough guide.

The brake pads can squeak when the braking surface of the pad has dirt on it or when the brakes have been cleaned using brake cleaner they start squeaking.....too help them not to squeak apply a thin smear of copper grease to the rear of the pads[the bit that touches the brake piston]

As stated  before; your bike is the same bike as a 2017 racing pro except that your bike has been made cheaper by fitting it with cheap suspension front and rear ...other differences being the larger fuel tank and you get a trail riding seat thrown in  to make it a randonne model if you like, and of course your Pirelli hard compound cheaper tyres and old rim tape sealed morad rear wheel in place of the newer airtight version rim.

Gas Gas pro models are basically the same as your contact from 2013 onwards so if you require information about it then go to www.gasgasmotos.es and go to manuals and look at a manual[It has all the service intervals listed] for a pro racing 250  2017 and follow everything  except obviously in regard to your suspension that has its own requirements that are in the Jim Snell video you have already used. Also use as reference for maintenance Jim Snells GasGas pro video's that you will find on You tube that are in his trialspartsusa  Youtube account. All of them from 2003 will be of use to you.And the suspension linkage maintenance videos as far back as 1994 on the original contact models that your bikes model name has been lifted from.

Almost everything that you need to know about your bike is on the you tube  tutorials by Jim Snell giving detailed information and video footage.

It worked well! cleaned the brakes and applied "quiet brake" to the rear surface!  squeaky noise is gone.   thanks for all the other tips

  7. good Lord. Is quite simpler than what they showed online!! thanks for the link! I guess he was right! I m going to attempt to do it myself.

I have checked into the Honda but for now this is a cheaper bike to learn. I just broke the seat assembly today. was trying to learn some sitting wheelies. I have called a couple gas gas dealers and am waiting on the price for a new one. as for now I repaired with some rivets and is reinforced. doesnt look the best but is stronger than factory

  8. Got a fork seal leak and already tried the seal mate tool without success.  My dealer said it's possible to change the fork seal without having to change the oil. I find hard to believe. Does it make sense?  He sent me a new pair of seals but I m nervous rack.  I m very frustrated with gas gas since I can't find how much oil that fork holds anywhere online or in the manual.  Do I need special tools? All the videos out there seem to be for different types of forks.

  9. I do not have a manual for the bike, What I find odd since I bought it brand new 16 days ago! I have put about 20 hrs of riding so far.

I went online and downloaded a manual / parts for the TXT 250 but no info on fluids or "how to" maintenance

is there  a tool to check the oil level and add oil if necessary?

  10. i got a new 2017 gas gas contact 250 and after 2 weeks riding I have a fork seal leak. I would take back to the dealer but is a 6hr trip.

My questions are:  Do I need special tools for the job? if so, which ones and where to find?

how do I find how much oil to put back in the fork? cant find in the manual

Has anyone done this job and have tips for me?? Thanks

  11. I m novice to the sport with only 10hrs or so on my New Gas gas contact 250.

Could anyone tell me the difference between the double blip and Zap. I have watched several videos of both and seems the exact same technique.

what's the difference?? which one clears higher obstacles?

Also, as a beginner, I m struggling with the right finger on the front Brake. should I cover it at all times? even during wheelies? I cover the clutch at all times but left hand does not require wrist motion... any tips on that?? Thanks a lot everyone

  12. Hello guys.

Just got a 2017 gas gas contact 250 today and was told by the dealer to mix fuel: avgas 80:1 ratio! I couldn't help to notice when I got home that on the gas gas website. The manual says 50:1 ratio!  I m a little confused, so I figure I would ask what are you guys running 50:1 or 80:1?  Also, what would be better? Avgas or race gas?  Thanks everyone for input

  13. Thanks Oni Nou. I hear you, but this is what I ve been told so far:

I was advised by few people to start with a 250 even though I am 230 pounds. They said the 300's are much snappier and might delay my learning curve! So I thought about a gas gas contact to save a couple G at first and Buy a top of line 300 when time comes respecting my skills! Does it make sense to you? thanks

  14. those are side by side specs!  Not Bragging about in any means, but I have the money to buy whichever I decide. I just thought I d ask you guys if is OK to save a couple G. by buying the contact. I do have a lots of BMX experience and am hoping for a fast progression in the sport. As far as buying a used bike, my only predicament is: Lack of mechanical skills and location. As much as I would love lessons I m quite far from the nearest club. I m in the heart of the Adirondack mountains. Plenty of places to ride though.  Make no mistake: All input is appreciated guys. I want to make the right decision.

  15. I have a chance to buy a brand new 2017 Gas Gas contact 250, but couldnt help to notice that it is priced significant lower than all the other 250s in the class including a Gas gas 250 TXT

when you compare the specs of the TXT and the contact, they are almost identical! What is the catch? if there is any.   Does anyone with trials experience know these bikes? the contact seems to be new in the gas gas trials line! I m contemplating to get one Saturday.   Thanks everyone
