I had the same problem with my TY250R back in 1988 - it too was running too lean, sorting the carb out got rid of the knock, and made it rev/pull like a train and the plug lasted for ages.(Which it didnt before)
-
Far too smart - yer banned !! Gives me more encouragement to get on with mine.
Two questions, first did you fit the chain tensioner, and second what model Colchester is that ?
-
Finally got the Ariel to a state where I can ride it - what a difference ! I now have first and second exactly as I want them with a nice gap to third, which will be ideal for long muddy hillclimbs. All the effort too in making the Jawa clutch fit was worth it,ultra smooth, one finger operation and no slip.Just like a modern bike really....
For anyone struggling with a road cluster in a Burman box this conversion is more than worth doing,it transforms the bike.

Any help ?

I have a manual somewhere..... Where are you ?
-
I would have been there but I was supporting the VMCC trial at Chedworth,Glos. Cant do all of it but what I thought was more of a shame was that only 34 other riders turned up to an excellent trial in bright sunshine.Esp seeing as Golden Valley had cancelled their trial yesterday.
Maybe next year I'll get my ar*e into gear and get an entry in for the Talmag.

I wasnt looking at her feet....

Welcome to the early Cota club ! Maybe we should arrange to meet up at a trial,( Bath Classic MCC ? ) to bring them all together when they are finished.Mine might take a while, but I'm hoping perhaps during 2014 it might happen...
-
Oooohhhh !!!!!! I think the Yam has it....
-
David, our conditions are usually wet, wet, wet ! Tonight its full on snow,I'll have to borrow Mikes A model to get an idea of how they ride compared to mine.He loves it and has had some really good rides on it compared to the TLR200 he was using before.Did you get my mail BTW ?
-
Should I fetch our coats ?

Interesting how we all have our own perceptions of bikes, the TY250 I use is is I think a D model rather than an A. Cant recall ever riding an A model, but my C of C Mike has one,I'll have to have to have a go and see how different it is.I really like the soft engine of mine,it will grip when often others, inc mono's are struggling.Apart from being a bit lacking in ground clearance there is nothing about I would change.Be interesting to see how much difference the extra ground clearance makes when I finish my Majesty project later this year.
The only Ossa I have ever ridden is the one which Mick Andrews uses currently. Its quite a special one with a 310 motor and I think Fantic front forks.I felt immediately at home on it,the general handling and steering seemed very similar to my Yam.A really nice bit of kit - but then if anyone is going to have a well sorted Ossa its going to be Mick.It also occured to me that the similarities are most likely to do with Micks development work on both makes.I've always found Monts and Bulto's to be harder work, also the 250 Beamish I started on was never willing to steer where I wanted - although it would grip and pull well.

Welcome to the forum. Excellent choice of bike, possibly the best clubmans trials bike ever made - certainly one of the most reliable. There is plenty of help to be had from this forum, try here; http://www.tytrials.co.uk/ For parts including spokes.
-
I think compared to some countries we are doing well,we can still ride modified bikes on the road, the Mot is still basic and pretty sensible,(Both my road legal trials bikes are too old to need Mots or road tax.) And as for being hidden or just polished or shown - I dont think so,I took great delight in getting my rigid Ajay into valve bounce flat out in third on a muddy climb at the last Golden valley trial. You dont have to hide them, show people what they will do and inspire younger riders to join in.

I bought a TLR250 brand new for my birthday in 1986,Honda paid for a barrel, piston and top end stuff 9 months later when it was knackered.... Also had an RTL250,couldnt get on with that either.Nearly as bad as the Tiger cub I got fed up with nailing back together. The three were some of the best looking trials bikes in my mind. All put right with TY Yams. But my rigid AJS is in a different class altogether, truly a thing of beauty - cracking bike to ride too.The HT5 is an ugly duckling by comparison, but its gearbox is now back together and just needs refitting....
-
Nah,always wanted a Lotus Sunbeam.... You can tell I'm bored, posting on here in the afternoon when I should be putting me Ariel back together.Progress has been halted by a POS Range Rover blocking my ramp which the Ariel should be on......
-
I used to run Triumph Dolomite Sprints back in my late teens - despite the reputation they were excellent, quick, reliable, comfy for courting,(As it was called then ! )and plenty of poke for towing trials bikes around with.Wouldnt mind one now.....
-
The Rustin Allaggro ! With a square steering wheel - Qualiteee.
-
Some stuff that was rubbish when new is now sorted and desireable - think how throwaway BSA bantams were, plus all the villiers engined stuff - James/FB etc. Now fully sorted they are the tool of choice for many in the "P65" game.....
Mind you flat twin BMW's will always be sh$*te !
-
Success ! This afternoon I extended the thread on the end of the mainshaft with the aid of my trusty Colchester. All the other bits I needed are on their way from the very helpful and knowledgable John Budgen.Shouldnt be too long now before I can try out the new ratios.
More studying of the links Mick posted, and other stuff I found on the net just go to show how many variations there are on these boxes.

Thanks Mick, yes - I'm very pleased with the gears, top quality. I worked out the changes I need to make to the sprockets to keep 1st gear the same as it was, need new crankshaft and rear wheel ones.Think I'll have a go at cutting some more thread on the existing shaft, worst case is that I end up with the old Norton clutch back on it.
I'll get some bushes on order tomorrow.I'm very much looking forward to having more than one useable gear, plus a decent road gear too. Then its only the forks and possibly steering angle to sort out....
-
This all looks horribly familiar !

I spent a very enjoyable afternoon in the workshop today doing a dry build of my HT5 gearbox with the new gears as supplied by Mick Ash.All fitted together beautifully, and was a joy to put together - till I got carried away and mounted the new Jawa speedway clutch to the end of the mainshaft..... Its too long by around 10-12mm,so the outer cover of the clutch fouls the end of the mainshaft. So my question is,from memory Sammy Miller used a shorter mainshaft to narrow his bike down. What were the standard lengths of shaft ? Mine is 1 and 1/16" of an inch from the end of the clutch splines to the very end of the thread. There is room to cut the end off the shaft and put a bit more thread on,(5/8x 20tpi) as the material doesnt seem too hard.
I'd rather use a different shaft if one is available, rather than cut mine. And does anyone have a recommendation for other gearbox parts like layshaft bushes ? I could make them but if good ones are available I'd rather buy them.
-
Try to keep our trials fresh and interesting, try to organise my time better, try to get my Ariel back in one piece, try to finish my TY/Serow project...... If I do half of that lot I'll be doing well, but if we can put on 8 decent trials in 2013 then I'll be happy.

I think a TY Yam is one bike where it isnt really much help to have electronic ignition, the original points setup is so reliable I cant see any point in changing it.Replacement points still seem to be of decent quality, unlike say modern Lucas car ones. The points and condensor in my TY250 have been changed once since 2006 - but only because I felt the need to do "something" to it,not because it wasnt running right. It still starts 1st/2nd kick, pulls cleanly and revs out well - what more could I want ?
