  1. Ive just got my bike back from the mechanic and it wants to ride itself when in gear and the clutch is pulled in? it didn't do this before tho for sure? It only went in for new seals, gaskets etc... and I gave him putoline nano trans to put back in the engine and ice cooler too!! any ideas whats wrong? I have noticed oil around the seal/cap on the clutch reservoir since its come back tho?? I trust my mechanic before anybody thinks its him lol! he used to be a Honda race mechanic etc...

Maybe you just found out why he's no longer a race mech.
  2. From what I have been lead to believe the ninth digit VIN number represents the country that it is has complied with in the way of emissions etc. My ninth digit is an 8.

I think the 8 means you "ain't" gettin a Green Sticker
  3. Most likely because, Honda Montesa underestimated the demand for the Repsol Replica, expected more of the standard bikes to be sold. So when ordering parts to build the Repsol bikes, they didn't order enough to meet demand. My dealer told me that the Showa suspension had a five month lead time from the Showa factory (how true that is, we will never know). But also as the Repsol only model, is now being sold in the States, that may well have also had an impact on availability.

I would be surprised if US sales account for more than 20 or 30 bikes...its just not happening here
  4. Hi,

Couldn't resist showing you this image!

A lovely Ken Jones image from the 1959 Scottish Six Days trial that shows one of the characters of our sport, Jack Oliver.

Jack badly wanted to ride in the Scottish and there were various rumours suggesting that the sidecar class in the event was unlikely to survive. Rumours that proved to be entirely accurate, as it happens.

Sadly none of Jack's regular passengers could get enough time off to do the six days so Jack persuaded his seventy-years-old Mum that she needed a holiday in the Highlands!

The old lady did him proud, sitting stoically in the chair throughout the week, no matter where they went. What is more, they finished and not in last place in class and reports at the time said that Mum appeared to be thoroughly enjoying herself!

    Now that's a story !!!

  5. Chris came to the same conclusion about the Sherco. It is soft initially but then the power arrives. The Problem is by the time it does you're doing something else!!

Perhaps James has crossed the line between fiction and non fiction? Could the JTG be that good? Or the interview with Andrews has made him dizzy !

    (Thanks James........loved the interview)

  6. This is on a somewhat local listing for sale as a "UK" trials bike.Pretty sure it has a non stock seat, but don,t think I,ve ever seen one.Is it Chinese? A friend of mine is interested in it.

Rode one back in the early 90's as I recall. San Diego Trials dealer was given one as a demo and we all took a turn on it.

Nobody had any kind comments about it.

  7. Most buyers of the often quoted best built bike on the market replace the top quality thorntons sump guard. I think people will accept more weight if the bikes are more robust. Most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between two bikes if one was full of fuel and the other was on reserve.

However the Fim rule change wont increase reliability. For that you need limited changes of key components in a season.

I don't recall the earlier TXT Gas Gas having anywhere near the transmission problems as the lighter, new and improved Pro Model. So much for light weight.

  8. I can name most of them....I was at that event in 83 in Texas. The ones there all had Bultaco style rear exhaust on them. Gilles Burgat, John Lampkin (who won the event), Bernard Cordonier, Renato Chiaberto, would have been the top riders on them that year. Am I missing anyone??? Who else was there or can remember the factory team that year? Diego and Michaud were on the team in 84 in Watkins Glen.

Pascal Couturier was on the Fantic in Texas. Cordonnier was on SWM (ck out Bernie's Book pg 101)

Duane Walters received one of the Works Fantics after the event. He just showed up at our last Trial here in

    S. Cal. I will ask him for any details of the bike next time I see him.

  9. an update on our offer to help families that were cut off from the flash floods..

i spent a day offering help...DOW, FS, ect, all thought is was a great idea, was told that the roads were closed...i said...we dont need roads..your not getting it...i messeged the Sherrif of that county..his lack of responce to it...when he responded to every other one from other people. tells me...alot...thanks to all those who jumped up and offered time, gas, and a motorcycle so that others may have water, food, meds ect... seems Boulder cant past what they think of Dirt bikes to get free help...

Since when are government workers expected to make commonsense decisions.........rarely happens.

Problem is, Tax Payers keep dumping pay checks in their laps so all motivation goes out the window.

  10. http://www.mototrial...12412-Final.pdf

From the NATC website. Supplemental rules Section G "Minders"

    also here under rules updates:

    http://www.mototrial...update_2013.pdf

    6) Minder must sign all required release form and wear approved riding apparel at all times.

    7. Minder must abide by all non-competition rider rules. Minders are only allowed in the Sections when their riders are attempting a section or as otherwise allowed by the observer.

I don't see where it says that riders must wear a helmet while walking the section. You may have a point there.

I have seen it both ways. Misunderstanding or not knowing the rules is something that both riders and observers are guilty of. and yes we are reviewing the NATC rule book.

Yes, it is a tough road being a Pro rider. But stop for a moment and step outside yourself. I checked both days in AZ with 2 great guys. All 3 of us had spent hundreds of $$$ and traveled many miles to stand in the woods and check and that is NOTHING compared to the work and $$ put in by the organizers. Why do it ? Because we love Trials.

Over the 2 days checking in AZ only one minder asked permission to enter the section. A couple always stayed outside the ribbon and the rest just walked through the section until told to get out.

NATC is just a bunch of volunteers just like any local club. It's easy to criticize and over the years I have been a part of NATC and at the same time critic of the way things are done. The good news is that there is new blood at NATC and I am optimistic about the future.

One thing I love about the way NATC is run that if you criticize something then you need to be ready to man up with a solution and fix it.

Yes a lot needs to be improved but these are the people that step up and DO THE WORK. The fact is that this sport runs on volunteer power.

Should there be professional observers, big Pro purses, big $$ sponsors and TV coverage, of course.

You don't like punching out on most of the sections ? then move down a class.

Sorry to be so direct but that's the way I see it.

Lets face it.....the "Pro Class" is made up of mostly part time riders who have other jobs, hobbies, or school. Their talent overall is rising every year due to the demands of the Pro Sections at our Nationals and at the same time sends the newest talent down the road. How long can this continue? Regressing to the Expert Class is not the answer as this almost never happens (for whatever reason) The Pro class is shrinking which means there's most likely a problem.

The NATC needs to address this as the organizing body......if not, who else will.

Its not like 20 or 30 years ago when the ability of the top class riders was somewhere between our current top Sportsman or Expert Class riders (if even that high)

Riders with a strong desire could arrive at this level in several years or so and maintain a position in the top 10 and still have a life outside the sport which in my view helped maintain a larger pool of attendance.

I personally don't see any answers in the near future unless the dead wood in the NATC chooses to step aside.

My opinion....If your not currently riding the Nationals, your attendance at the meeting should be welcome...but never allowed to make any decisions as to rules or changes in the sport.

Let the Riders Decide the Future of the Sport

  11. Have you considered a 320 Sherco? Alot less work and does not look like a dog with its tail kicked!

Hey Cope..........I hear ya.....but do you ever get tired of working on someone else's ideas (or sh_t). My first version of this was in 1997 and it has changed dramatically since then. I have ridden all the 4 strokes as they

came along and they are all fantastic bikes, (actually the Sherco was my favorite) but always feel I would change something.........I never worry about the sanity of cutting up a $8K + beauty (which used to be a bad habit of mine)

As for the rear fender, its from a 300 Fantic because I always liked the flat transition from seat to fender as I like to sit my tired old ass down when riding the loop.

  12. ok finally got the bike to run, and run it did!!! did some practice work, then it just stopped..1 kick and it fires back up and off I go again for another 1 minute, then stop.

I cleaned out the carby, the gauze behind the inlet too, blew it all out with the compressor, checked the floats not sticking etc. there is no kinks in the fuel hose and its stock tuning.

Can anyone help with this one?

Sounds like fuel supply to carb is partially blocked by maybe a fuel filter (carb runs out of gas then slowly refills........repeat)
