    Seeley 250

Yes, Japanese tuner Kondo did 250 conversions for the RS200 motors, which is what the Seeley uses and they have a good reputation. You're right in that it has to have the stroke altered as well as a larger bore to get 250cc, therefore the conversion was quite a lot of work as the engine had to come apart, rather than just an overbore. It's unlikely, although not impossible of course, that anyone in the UK would have had a Kondo conversion on a Seeley but Honda did use 250 Seeleys in the SSDT ridden by Lejeune and the Jap rider whose name I can't remember right now. Could it be one of those? Unless someone did their own conversion using TLR top end. None of which matters anyway. Fact is, it's a 250, not unique but rare, nice bike, keep it if you can. It would be difficult to find anyone who knows for definite whether any Seeleys were offered from new with the 250 conversion. If it is registered, try tracing the previous owners through DVLA (if they will do that) and see if you can turn anything up that way - maybe Honda UK could be among previous keepers.

    Seeley 250

It begins with TE as I believe all Seeley engines do.
  3. Woody if this works it should show the content off the original post WoodyApr 9 2005, 08:20 PM Anyone know whether it is possible to buy a new camshaft for the Seeley Honda? Mine has 'flats' on the tips of the lobes so is no good. I know it is possible to get it reprofiled but I'd rather get a new one if possible. As I understand it the profile is different on the Seeley from XLI85 and other engines so although it is possible to fit another cam, it may mess up the slow running of the engine. I will try the usual sources such as Gordon Farley, David Silver etc. next week, but just wondered if anyone may know of a specific source, or even whether they are, or were ever available. If not I'll have to get it reprofiled. In which case does anyone know the number of Joy Cams - can't find it anywhere myself. Also, does anyone know of a piston that will fit and where to get it from. I've looked on the Wiseco site and can see that there are pistons available for bikes with the same bore/stroke such as oversize pistons for ATC200, XL200, XR200 etc. but not sure about the compression ration of any of these. I have heard of a TLR200 piston being used so that is an option. Any help will be appreciated. Griffiths of WalesApr 14 2005, 09:00 AM Woody, Does your camshaft have a bearing/bush fitted to the side opposite the cam chain sprocket? Mine has a solid bush fitted and I reckon there is about 0.005" clearance between the I/D of the bush and the O/D of the camshaft. Oh..by the way, are you Stephen Hole of 'Hope' fame?...if you are watched you many times riding down here in the St Davids. Best regards, Mark. MartinMApr 14 2005, 10:41 AM Think the chap you are talking about in the Isle of Man who bought the Seeley spares is called John Quaye (01624 853031). Martin WoodyApr 14 2005, 03:52 PM Mark, it does have a bush fitted but it is ok, it is the lobes which are worn on mine. No I'm not Woody Hole, I'm Dave Wood from Brum and unfortunately don't possess half of his trials riding ability either.... Regards 200 cams, a friend has a 200 engine out of a Paris-Dakar style Honda 200 with electric start. The cam on this has a proper bearing on it, not a bush and the electrics are on the crank not the cam so there are some differences on the 200 engines to watch out for. Thanks Martin, that's the name I was trying to remember. Not sure how much stuff he has but I've heard he isn't prone to letting any of it go. I've managed to find someone else on the IOM who also has a Seeley and who knows John, so he is going to ask a few questions for me. From what I've been told though, there was very little in the way of mechanical components in what he bought so not too hopeful but you never know. I've heard there are about 10 Seeleys on the IOM and John Quaye has 6 of them.
  4. If you phone Bill Pye (fantic dealer) I know that he has some rear sprockets for the Seeley,, I know this because after i bought his Seeley and all his spares for it he pulled them out and tried to sell me them seperatly...!!! SeeleyJack
  5. Hello Boys...Just about to change the cam chain on my Seeley, any tips? Engine in/out frame etc Haven't got a manual for the TL/TLR motor yet (Just ordered with Amazon) so any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Mark.
  6. There is a Seeley in bits on ebay, no motor though. Finishes tonight. The seller spelt it wrong they have spelt it SEELY. Update. The rolling chassis made
  7. im not sure if it was the rs or less likely the seeley but many years ago at a open to centre nene valley trial we had a japanese rider and nick holt both rideing together i seem to think this was first time seen in england these bikes,i may be wrong as it was a long time ago.i was into hondas then i still am now.
  8. Scrumpy, are you still looking for a complete Seeley front end?ie Wheel (complete) forks etc as i have one which will be geting sold in the next couple of weeks.
  9. I have one of the last ones made here. Not trialled it properly yet only out occasionally due to improving my riding on the Scorpa. Not into the hopping around type trials so I need to go twinshock/ classic route asap, just found a Majesty 250 to sort but may be tempted to take the Seeley out. ( Still on original tyres) How many have you had now Scrumpy ???
  10. The RS200 has a stronger frame, both bikes share the same engine... The Seeley is the more exclusive So if i was riding it every week it would be the RS, but hand on heart it would be the Seeley every time..!! I have the third one made sat in my garage right now.. i am just getting around to finishing it off before i sell it.. sadly SeeleyJack :-)
  11. I'm surprised that you're finding the RTL engine too aggressive as the RTL is softer and smoother than a TLR250 in its power delivery. Both engines share virtually identical components as far as I know, with a different ignition on the RTL giving it the softer delivery than the TLR. If yours is too quick and not smooth it could be that valve/ignition timing is set incorrectly so I'd start by checking these. Then valve clearances. Carburation - which carb have you used. Early RTL used a 22mm carb, possibly the same as the TLR200. Later RTL, which yours is being a 1988, had a 26mm carb I think. If you've used the TLR200 carb it may be jetted incorrectly so worth checking the jets. For the 22mm carb they should be Main = 110, Pilot = 38, Pilot screw 1.75 turns out. Sorry, don't have the Slide number, Needle number and clip position Exhaust - which exhaust are you using. The RTL motor may not run well with the standard 200 exhaust as they are a bit restrictive. If you're using that fit a WES or DEP system. Where did the engine come from - did you take it out of a running RTL and if so did it perform the same in that bike or did it run correctly. If you have just bought an engine only and used TLR200 CDI/Coil they may be causing problems, try to get original RTL CDI/coil - Ellastone Offroad should be able to help if you need to. As regards the power, obviously it is going to have more than the TLR200 so it is going to spin up easier and it will be lighter on the front too. The TLR200 has more than enough power for twinshock events but they are not at all aggressive and find grip very well. The RTL power delivery can be made softer by reducing compression, either by altering the piston crown or adding a spacer under the cylinder but I've no experience of either so can't give precise details. Another way is to retard tha valve timing half a tooth by drilling the cam wheel in the appropriate place to achieve this. It makes a difference. Also fit a slow action throttle. A friend of mine has recently done the same conversion to a 200 and the only engine mod was to retard the valve timing and use a WES exhaust. I've tried the bike and it is very soft and smooth. I've also put a RTL motor in my Seeley and that too is smooth, so something fundamental is causing the problem you are experiencing, it isn't a characteristic of the engine. As regards the clutch, it's a Honda and Honda trials clutches are not very good. If used a lot they overheat, the plates swell and you get the cable go slack and constantly have to adjust it until it cools down again. They are also grabby and erratic, not very smooth - there are mods you can do to help overcome this, but depending on who you ask there are several different solutions - they don't all work. My mates with their TLR250's have yet to find the one that does. Being a 1988 model though, yours should have the later, bigger clutch, different from the TLR and maybe not prone to the awful snatching and jerking of the earlier model. They shouldn't slip though. Maybe the plates are just worn or the clutch isn't adjusted properly. Don't use fully synthetic oil as this may also cause the clutch to slip. I doubt the 4RT plates will fit but you really wouldn't want a 4RT clutch either - it's in or out with nothing inbetween. Good luck as it will make a nice bike when sorted.
  12. No I don't own the first two Seeley Hondas made, nor do I really desire to own them, I'm happy with the two I do have. Big John
  13. Yes i paid a premium to get it there and then, and had a 600 mile round trip.. i saw it at 8.30am and was on my way cash in hand by 8.55am, ! "one of the joys of working for yourselfe" I get a real kick out of rebuilding bikes too a high standard, then selling them and moving on to the next project, but this Seeley is in the best condition out of all the Seeley"s i have owned, it has had very little use, so it will be an easy restoration.. watch this space and i will post some pics soon. Scrumpy
  14. Hi , i sure you asked me to make a rear silencer as per Seeley, the item is in my workshop if you need it .
  15. The tank badges for the tlr 200 and 250 are red/white and blue Seeley Honda are yellow
  16. Well i have just recieved my stainless Seeley exhaust... and all i can say is WOW, What a first class job, and if any of you out there were ever thinking of getting a better exhaust for there bike look no further than Dave, anyone who wants his contact details pm me and i will pass them on. not grumpy no more: Scrumpy
  17. The stickers are fine thanks,, but do you do the small stickers that go under the wings on a seeley.. Scrumpy
  18. No this is another one, and its costing an arm and a leg to sort out! Maybe i should change my name to "SeeleyJack" SeeleyJack Hi i have fitted a stainless system to my Seeley (and a front disc) Big John got his from the same chap dave ........, i have his number if you need it and how were your stickers!!!!
  19. Apparently there is a bloke in the Isle of Man who has some parts, someone on here may know who I mean. Maybe Big John knows. I had his details but cant find them now, Sorry. Is it the one with the disc front end or have you found another one? PS my Seeley has a Wes system easily modified to fit if you dont have any joy with an exhaust system.
  20. Not much more to add to the Seeley info provided by motomike - In the late 70s Honda were enjoying some success with Rob Shepherd riding the 305 works Honda which evolved into the RTL360 which Lejeune later took to three world championships in early 80s. Honda wouldn't build a production version of these bikes much to the disappointment of Honda fans, but they did commission Colin Seeley to build a mini version of the bike which was the Honda Seeley 200. In looks it was very similar to the works bikes but was powered by the engine used in the RS200. Seeley made a few changes to it such as weighted crank, 198cc instead of the standard 194, maybe a couple of other things which I can't remember but still the same motor essentially. Between 3 - 400 were made which makes them a bit of a rarity these days. They were expensive at the time and I'm not sure how well they sold. They weren't a bad bike but not as good as the front line bikes at the time such as Fantics etc. Initially the steering was based on a Bultaco, but I think they altered it soon after - certainly doesn't feel like a Bultaco does, feels quicker. A few 250 versions were built for Lejeune and and others to ride in the Scottish and some world rounds. This isn't an easy conversion as it requires a longer stroke on the crankshaft as well as an overbore. Here's a link to Brian R's site which has pictures of a Seeley and also, on the Home page is a picture of one of Lejeune's RTL360 works bikes. Brian R's Honda website As regards TL200 I don't know anything about them so can't tell you anything worthwhile. If it turns out to be a TLR200, they are a good bike and well up to the job of twinshock events or clubman routes in modern events
  21. Hi TL200 I feel sure one of the seeley experts on this site will give you the full history, but basicaly the seeley was an authorised by Honda ,UK built bike, frame being made by Colin Seeley, using Honda motor, and wheels, but Italian Marazochi forks. If you have a genuine TL200,it could well be discribed as the clubmans bike for riders in Japan at the time, not imported to the UK at the time and the basis of what a Seeley was built from.your engine no should be TL200E???? There is also an RS200 ,which is very similar but with an alloy s/arm,and RS200T engine no`s But please note, you say red/white and blue are you sure it is not a TLR200 ? this is a more common bike, that was imported here, but some what different Final note it could be a TL200 that has been painted in the red/white /blue,this is something riders in japan did.
  22. Hi could you give me a bit more info about the 250 conversion . Seeley`s a great bike but need`s just a little more power !!!
  23. Get yourself an old 8mm bolt (longer the better) screw it into swinging arm shaft and hit the end of bolt. 2 points come to mind, 1 if you can't remove a swinging arm spindle, what hope have you got for fitting a disc conversion and 2 why would anybody want to fit a rear disc conversion to a Seeley.

    Seeley

As stated earlier I have still got the Amal throttle on mine and it seems a bit firey, took it for a MOT today so had a chance to try it and I dont know whether the throttle is fast or slow, my Scorpa 125 seems sedate compared to the Seeley. Any ideas to tame it?? Thanks
  25. andy m

    Seeley

I plan to use mine this year, not trialled it yet. Its still on standard tyres, levers and cables even Doherty grips Amal throttle etc. As it left the factory except for a Wes pipe. I also have a genuine Seeley tank cover/ seat unit that was supplied with the bike when new still in wrapper.
