Bike did not feel great today bit sluggish but nothing too noticable. Rode around a bit say for 1 hour and then slowed down to stop, changing down in the process. then noticed my bike had turned into a oil waterfall!

It seems as if a gear tooth may have flown off and put a hole in the engine case!

Should I

A)Try and replace the engine case and clutch plates??

B Sell the bike it will cost a fortune?

C) cry!

Any idea how much a new engine case will cost?

Ouch, that looks nasty.

I think you'd be best off removing the clutch cover to check the extent of the internal damage and maybe then cry?

I don't think a gear tooth is likely to get through to that side of the crank case. Looks more as if it's off the back of the clutch basket.

If that is all the damage to the case then it could be minor. But cleaning out the small bits will be the challenge without causing further problems.

Update

Ive been out and taken the clutch side off.

It seems the cog has broke a tooth and dragged it to the engine case getting stuck and then forcing a break. What is this cog that's broken?

Looks a easy repair to me get casing welded stick a new kickstart gear in job sorted! Its got to work out cheaper than new casings!

I agree

There's no oil pressure in the casing so I would imagine welding it back together would do the trick.

Thanks guys! I think im going to get it welded for belt and braces. I have never taken a bike engine apart before but im mechanically minded so im going to give it a go. I take it i need to order a kick start gear cog (i take it thats what ive broken???) together with the associated gaskets.

Is that the cog that has the tooth broken?

Glyph i think the engine cases are just alumnium.

Yup, it's the "starter gear".

Shouldn't be a hard job, I think the most diffuculty you will have is getting the spring back on?

You will most definately need an impact wrench to remove the clutch.

Don't apply any force to the clutch basket when trying to remove it, they break easily.

The only gasket you should need to replace is the "inner clutch cover gasket"
