Hi,

I have a 2009 montesa repsol and it is "tapping".

I have adjusted the valve clearances and checked the cam chain adjuster (which is fine).

Even with the tappets set according to the manual I still have much too much tapping from the top of the engine...

Any ideas what i'm missing?

All the time. Speeds up with the engine speed.

They can make a bit of noise if your are not using the recommended oil weights in the engine.

I am no 4rT man, but if your valve lash is correct, I would then be looking at things like worn valve guides, rocker pivots and piston clearances.

I have worked on some well worn CRF bikes and seen the carnage!

nasty , do you have oil pressure at the top end? where the tappets adjusted on the correct mark?

It is not so long ago when I was doing a Honda Montesa 4RT year 2005 which

had some noise coming from the cylinder head and the area around the valves.

It was found to be cam chain was worn out. But your trial bike is the much newer!

Just one other thing - have you changed your oil filter?

The reason I ask is that I am from a previous repair've seen that you can turn

oil filter wrong with subsequent damage to the crankshaft. I did not think my

eyes when I discovered it.

Thought of the cam chain but I took of the adjuster and put it back on checking how far it went out. It didn't turn very far so the chain is fine.

Just changed the oil and filter, I put the new filter in the same way as the old one... otherwise it's round so it can't be wrong if it's not upside down?

They only fit one way

Make sure it's right way round

It is no story I am telling about the oil filter. It can be installed upside down.

The engine ran all right, but it there were a lot of noise coming from the engine.

The engine got a new crankshaft from England ( half price ) and the bike got its normal noise level again. I was surprised that it had drove so long without any complaints except from the noise from the engine - they are build to last long, those HONDA MONTESA 4RT

Yeah i definatly put it in the right way. Seal on the. Bottom and the spring in with a bit of grease!
