Reality is that 4stroke trials bikes require more work to maintain than a 2stroke trials bike, generally the only work needed on the engine is gearbox oil changes & air filter cleaning where the 4stroke you also have engine oil to do & valves to adjust.

Trials bikes require next to no work on a daily basis compared to the higher tuned motors in most bikes, I've only done 1 possibly 2 piston kits in my Jarvis which was delivered August 04 & it's done 1000s of hours of work & they were only done as a precaution rather than because the motor was noisy or lost performance, the muffler condition has more bearing on power especially bottom end

New 4-stroke Sherco

A friend of mine tried to order a new Sherco 320 four stroke trials bike last month through the Sherco dealer in Norway. They couldn`t get it delivered. Sherco wouldn`t confirm that they have stopped making them. So now my friend awaits a new 2-stoke 305cc.

I still have my 2007 3.2F and I find it very fun to ride. Last week I made a change to the engine that has transformed the bike very much. I did put a restriktor plate between the cylinderhead exhaust outlet and the exhaust pipe. This is a 3mm thin washer with an outher diameter of 43mm and a 24mm opening in the middel for the exhaust gas. The Sherco exhaust pipe has a 36mm internal diameter so this reduction looks quiet much but the Honda 4RT has a lot thinner exhaust pipe than the Sherco. This restriktor plate has taken away the wildness of the 2007 model. Now it is very much controllable and smooth. A couple of years ago I also installed the Kehin PWK 28 with the SPS system. This came on the later bikes. So if you have a 2007 bike, and you find it to wild and a handful as many say they find them, I would recommend to try this small change. Have a washer made and try it out. For me it is another bike now. I am 57 years old and Norwegian trials champion of 1976.

In 1972 I bought my first real trialsbike. I was 16 years then. My first bike was a 250cc Montesa. The one with the white frame and big wheel hubs. In competition I was no allowed to ride this as a sixteen year old so I took out the engine and put a east-german MZ 125cc engine into it. It work very well with a larger rear sprocket on. My second bike was the 1974 OSSA 250cc. I bought this a little used in 1975. The OSSA was a bit more easy to ride than the Montesa. In 1976 I bought an almost new Bultaco Sherpa 350 which was a 323cc bike. Thats the one i used to win the championship. I believe Martin Lampkin was the first world champion ever in 1976 and he rode such a bike. Any picture I dont have on my present adresse..

So when I took up trialsriding again in 2007 after a 30 years pause I wanted something different and that had to be a four-stroke bike. I revs half as fast as the 2-stroke and it ignites not each revolution, but only every second time. So it is much clooser to your heartbeat. Perhaps that is why I am facinated with the fourstroke enigine. It is calm and it calms you down and makes you smile. And the world champion ride one. My friend who now wanted a brand new Sherco four-stroke already has the 2009 ST 320F. He also has likes them very much and wanted a new one.

I think Sherco should develop the fourstoke engine further and put a good rider one the bike, for example Alexander Ferrer. I think Cabestany rode better one the four-stroke bike as he does now on the 2-stroke. It was more magic present then and the riding itselt looked more like a dance.
