I am pulling apart a 2006 Rev 3 270 to replace the kick starter mechanism.  I was worried about the casing water pump corrosion.  Well worry no more, it is eaten up pretty badly, so I ordered a new one.  I was curious if someone mixed anti-freeze types as there is also a white gel that was hardened around the water pump impeller clip.  Anyway, thought I would share the pics of what I found.

 

Here is the inside of the water pump cover, the coolant had apparently been drained a while back, the bike had sat since 2009 or so and it was given to me, so I can't really complain at the price.

Thanks, that is good information.  After searching a bit, I ordered some Motul Factoryline Organic coolant as it is supposed to be compatible with the magnesium.  It looks like most of the coolant system is clean, and only the water pump has this issue.  So I will flush everything and hope the parts arrive in the next week or two.

I am enjoying taking the bike apart, I may take it all the way down and clean it nicely while I await the parts.  The chain is past it as well, so there is some more fun.

What kind of oil is blue?

I would be careful about letting people know your using that Motul factory line organic coolant around here... you might get lynched. What you need to use is Aunty Bettys Econo Cool.

I' am Bohemian so I can tell the real story but the photos do tell the issue ... water isn't the best for coolant of magnesium and aluminum cases. Something I have already seen in the past. For a trouble free futur of riding my hint not to use water based coolant. This time even with a link of a product I use:

In my personal experience ... it does work, (KTM 500 2stroke 1989).

Two liters cost 32€ the same amount of standard coolant for motorcycles 14€, that's twice as much. But it doesn't matter because you can use it nearly for ever or at least as long as you have the bike.

When Jay Leno filled that decades ago in his racing Bugatti from the 30's and haven't changed it yet (and a racing Bugatti is really much money) so what should happen. Oh and there didn't happen anything to my bike either.

What kind of oil is blue?

 GM auto trax is blue. We used to use it in the Gasser pro motors.

I have no idea what they used in it.  I am going to use Motorex 20W50 because I have a lot and can't use it in anything else.  I live in Texas USA.  I searched a bit, and the Motul Motocool says it works for magnesium and aluminum.  So I think I will give it a shot.  I have a replacement case coming from the UK.  I am working up a list of parts needed and then I hope to have it running in a week or three.

Was considering doing this since I've run it in all my dirt bikes (Honda, KTM, Yamaha) with great results. I just bought a 2015 Beta 300 4T should I worry about corrosion ?

I read all the newer ones and especially the four strokes don't have the magnesium case, so the problem isn't there on your bike.  Can't hurt to use a good coolant.  I use Engine Ice in everything else because it works well like watter wetter to lower running temps.  I got my motul motocool in and all my parts are shipped, just waiting for them to arrive.  Can't wait to play with this bike!

 

Well, I got some Beta parts in today, so I popped off the clutch cover and found around $315.00 more in parts are needed.  I am hoping I don't have to split the cases on the motor, but I seem to be missing 2 plastic teeth from the water pump gear and 2 metal gear teeth that came off of the starter gear.  I am looking forward to cranking her, it just isn't looking real good...

 

Kickstart gear on kickstarter had a couple of chips in it.

The water pump Drive gear also had two teeth missing, so I may have a water pump that wasn't turning that gave up at the end.

 

 

It makes sense with the stuff that was in the water pump when I pulled it apart.

 

Yikes! Yea, you need to find them gear teeth.

Well, to update.  I found the gear teeth.  One was jammed behind the gear and one was near the oil drain.  I installed the new gears, lost a dowel for the side cover.  I am waiting on seals, and the dowel, hopefully I will get them soon.  I have time to look at the stator, check the carb, install the new rear rotor, and give her a loving cleaning.  The chain probably needs to be replaced, but I will see if I can resurrect it first.

Waiting for parts is a bit taxing, but progress is being made

 

The grey stuff in the casing is just powder coating that has swelled up and lifted due to the antifreeze, It then gets munched up by the impellor.

 

The cases are coated inside and out and they are not etched primed first, Just spent a few hours scraping an evo casing back and the powder was not adhered properly on all casings. Seems to be worse on the factory model magnesuim casings.

 

The Rev3's were very good on that year, you will have lots of fun on that!

 

 

Quick update, still awaiting parts, the carb is pristine, good for me.  I got a new chain, rear rotor and sprockets in.  Waiting on the dowel for the case.  New case is aluminum, got the new water pump shaft and oil seal in today.  Waiting for the stator.  The previous owner suspected it had issues.  It did, a chunk out of a winding and an open.  Ricks stators can't rewind, so I ordered a new one from Trials and Tribulations in the UK.  If I get her running soon, I will probably put new tires on her.   It is a long slow process waiting for parts.
