I've noticed over the last few weeks my bike seems to have a strange whine

when ridden, but only in second gear in all the other gears its fine. Its now got to

the point where other people can hear it as I'm riding, the bike its self is 

riding ok. I'm going to try get a video of it as well 

 

I've just been and started the bike to try and get a video of it running in second gear

on the workshop stand in the garage and it isnt making the whine so it must be

doing it under load

From my experience start with the simple easy to see item The chain

I would agree with what Basil says,could be that the chain is too tight/ over tensioned when the suspension is compressed.

JSP says it only happens in second gear, this suggests its internal gear related rather than final drive chain tension.

I changed the oil the other day and it was a funny colour

Is it a diesel ?

how long had it been in there? were there any bits stuck to the drain bolt? any coolant loss? 

I must admit it had been longer than usual, about 8 weeks since its last change, I've checked the coolant and it was fine

And there was a few tiny bits on the sump plug but not a lot

No unfortunately it's clear

Clutch plate fibre breaking up?????

Fair chance your clutch has been slipping, this burns and darkens the oil as well as excessively wearing the clutch lining.

it only had a new clutch fitted in Feb 2015
