From my memory Dave you are right but it was that he didn't have an underchinstrap which was the problem, so after the threat of exclusion he added either a chin strap or the other thing and rode a few trials with both? Seems daft now of course but I do remember at the time helmets were not compulsory on the road?

Penny's dropped and I've just realised the difference between the chin cup/strap and an under-chin strap. Can't remember how he resolved the problem, just recall that he carried on wearing it. I do remember it meriting headlines in TMX at the time, on more than a few occassions.

Helments definitely compulsory on the road from 1973 as Montman says - unless you wear a turban.

Been looking at this photo and wondering how he held it. I would expect to come out of that skip on the back wheel these days (if not on my ar5e).

He looks like he's already dropped the front wheel below the level of the skip? And he looks like his weight's further forward than you'd expect.

Might be one of those spot the ball type photo's where you'd never imagine they were in that position at any time to get to where they were going.

Anyone explain? Looks like he would go over the bars from that position?

A lot did go over the bars, but not Scarlett, landed it both wheels together.
