New chain

Hi guys. How do I know what chain to get to replace my old one? Are they all the same length? It’s a 1999 txt 280 

ive cleaned the chain but it’s very dirty and full of gunk

do I measure? Count links or are they all the same

Wash it out with kerosene and dry before relube. Do a Google search for measuring wear will best tell you how to check wear.

As above, refit it and tension as per spec. Then looking at the rear sprocket, at the point furthest back, pull it away from the sprocket, if there is any significance movement it probably needs replacing. What condition are you sprockets in ?

When you buy a chain you have to pick one of sufficient length to fit your bike, often you will need to remove some links to tailor it to your machine, this is done with a grinder usually. You will probably want a 520 by however many links yours is, you may well have to buy longer and cut it down as mentioned.
