schrocketeer
There's 'Cota' printed several place on my '16 260. What does that it stand for, is it an acronym, or someone's name? Yes, I've tried searching, and google translate, but granted I may have overlooked something quite apparent.
lineaway
In 1968 it was the first year of the trials bike. Which the model was Cota. What cota meant in 1968, is probably different now. On the plus side my new german shephard puppie is named Cota. 1
jonnyc21
Well from Google Translate I see that Cota = "Level" in English so maybe it was just intended to be interpreted as "Montesa Level"? Implication that if you rode a Montesa you would up your game/level? I know that isn't a great guess but other than that I really wouldn't know. Hoping someone else might know and chime in on this one.

rocker1
Just asked my Spanish friend (I live in Spain) and he said Montesa's are referred to as Mountain bikes and Montesa Costa means " mountain leveler" Not 100% but makes sense. locobeta
. Years ago I read in a Spanish trial forum that Cota means "deer cub", that's how it was known in old Spain.
trapezeartist
"Cota" can also mean "altitude". La montaña tiene una cota de 1000 metros. The mountain has an altitude of 1000 metres.
lemur
For a spell they liked naming motorcycle models after animals with horns: Impala, Cappra (Capra is a mountain goat or Ibex). I always thought Cota was a coined name for a mountain sheep or lamb. Maybe it's just a cool name that stuck.
Nigelpugh
I’ve got the big book they made for the 2020 75th Anniversary, there’s lots of history relating to the first Cota bike there. Heres some of it. Montesa History
