Hi, Are there any alternative rear shocks from other newer makes that could be adapted to fit in the TY? Cheers

I have no manual and plan to take my forks apart, clean them and then install the new "Magical" fork springs and adjusters that I just received from France. Does anyone know what the original spec. is for the amount of, or level for, the forks on this bike? I'm assuming that the spec. for oil weight is10w30 or 10wt (I'm 130lbs so a light rider)? The springs and adjusters did not come with any info. so I'm assuming that I set the adjuster length so that the combination of the adjusters and the new springs match the length of stock springs? Thanks for your help.

I recently took apart my 74 Yamaha TY250. After putting it back together and with some help, got the motor running great, BUT, the bike will only shift into 1st and neutral. I did not spilt the cases. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello All, Its been almost 2 months since I last posted about the 1977 TY250D 493 series that trying I am restoring for my son. Well in the process of replacing the points and condenser I managed to scrape the source coil pretty bad. Apparently the tool to keep the flywheel from turning stuck through too much at one point. I'll post some pictures. Looking at all options I think rewinding the coil would be the most cost effective. But to do that I need the resistance specs on the coil. I've got a 74 Yamaha TY 250 that my best friend owned and used to ride frequently. Then he sold it to a mutual friend of ours last summer and it sat for a year. I got the bike after he passed away last Labor Day Weekend. When my best friend had the bike, we put a new condenser on it and it seemed to run fine. He did have to change the spark plug fairly often because his plug would be fouled out. It seemed to have a weak spark. Would this be a problem with a bad coil or just the points need to be changed? I cleaned the carb a couple of weekends ago and it has fuel getting to the spark plug, but I don't have any spark at the spark plug. Is there a place to change it o…

What is the correct procedure for setting the points gap? I had the primary stator coil give up the ghost this spring.I then put the lighting coil in its place along with a new set of points and condenser.Checked for spark,which was good and back in the corner she went until last weekend. It was very reluctant to start and when it briefly did it sounded really out of time so I shut it down and took the Sherpa T. Maybe there are other problems in my using the lighting coil,but I would like to make sure that I have the points set correctly before anything else. It's been awhile since I've been to this forum, but I'm looking for some parts for my recently aquired 1974 TY250. The bike is in really good shape and I don't want to damage a very good gas tank. Does anybody make a decent replacement tank? (plastic would do). Also, the bike came with a extended & thicker seat. I'm looking for a solo replacement seat. Any suggestions? Thanks

Hi Folks, this is probably rudimentary for some of you, but I just want to get it right. Bought a new PBI dished rear sprocket (428x55T) and replacing what was on the bike (flat with no spacer, 428x52T) as it came to me. So when installed, teeth are dished away or outward from (to the left) the wheel correct? Chain alignment looks straight to me this way. Searched the original manual and could not get a good visual or printed verification from it. BTW replacing 14/52 with a 13/55 and new chain setup. Will be used mainly for vintage trials and general plonking. Thanks in advance.

Hi All, I'm getting going on the restoration of the TY250. I got the frame all stripped down except thw triple clamps and the foot pegs. During the process I came across a small area behind the headstock that has a hinged cover which opens from below. It is held closed by a knurled thumbscrew. A bunch of hazel nuts and looks like flower seeds fell out when I open it. What is it for? I'll tr to post some pictures.

Hello Everyone, I just posted my intro a few days ago, and in part of that intro I showed my current project, my son's TY250. My question regards the flywheel on the TYs. This TY is a 493-200127, which makes it a 1977 vintage. Were the flywheels made extra heavy for them, and are they distinguishable from other 250 Yamahas of that time frame? I ask this because somewhere around 1992 or 93 my son bought this bike. He rode it for a while until one day it quit on him, no spark. My brother-in-law and I came to the conclusion that it was a problem with the points an no matter what we tried, could not remove the flywheel. I recall we messed up a wheel puller in the pro…

May sound like a strange question, but I’m sure lots of you will be able to answer it for me! Does anybody what the triangular alloy plate with the large hole is for? It is riveted onto the front of the Airbox and looks like it has been added by a previous owner. I’m thinking of taking it off but before I do I wondered why it was there. many thanks

How do you remove the seal under the bolt at the bottom of the fork? Do you need to replace if it looks OK? I currently have 2 sets of forks. One set has what looks like a red fiber washers in place but they do not want to move almost like they are glued on place. I don't know if both sides sealed or not. The second set looks like it has copper washers on top of the red fiber washers. Both sides of this did seal.

Once I used the lightest oil I could find, my TY175 forks felt pretty good as far as spring rate and damping was concerned. However, there is still a lot of stiction and the forks are not very compliant over little bumps. A friends TY with 250 forks looks and feels much more compliant on small stuff. Are the 250 forks more compliant for some reason. (They are hard to find.) Can the 175 forks be improved in this area? My fork tubes were a bit scratched up but repaired with JB Weld and much polishing. They do not leak. I was advised to get the "green" fork seals but could not find them in this small size. Guys- as you probably know, the stock air filter is not the easiest thing in the world to service or maintain. It worries me that the air box and air filter may allow dirt to enter the carb because of a poor fit and or leaks. Has anyone come up with a fix for the stock air filter problems? I just picked up a rough 1974 TY80 Yamaha. The following would help 1. Gas Tank Capacity 2. No spark, I have compression. I disconnected the kill switch wire to the handlebars, but still no spark. Other wiring appears to be intact. I haven't gotten into the sidecase for the points as yet. However, did the stock TY80 have a main ignition switch other than the kill switch on the handlebars? Just a few pics of my home made TY80 silencer. couldn't source a new one so decided to have a go at making one. from 3 bits of tube. Quiet happy with the outcome and enjoyed the challenge.

I have ran across a discrepancy in what I have and what I have read and seen. I have a stock and aftermarket stock size pistons. Both have the windows on one side and the arrow on the other. The parts diagrams I have looked at all show the arrow and windows on same side facing forward toward exhaust. Am I missing something or is something not right here. I am about to put the piston in with windows toward exhaust but the arrow will face back which goes against every piston I've ever installed.
