Hi there, Just been given the above from a neighbours garage & would be grateful for a few hints.I have sent off for manual but would like to get a little further without waiting for it to arrive. Managed to get motor running after thoroughly cleaning out carb - bike hadn't run for over 10 yrs - but would be grateful for any info on carb settings. Any clues relating to the 4 position ignition key - what does each do? Also what is spec. & amount of gearbox oil required? Any info gratefully received.

Ok, as some of you have read, I'm going to set out on the rebuild of the TY80. Looking at it last night it appears the rod has wedged itself between the crank lobes, and there is some serious damage to that entire unit. Based on what I'm seeing, I am assuming I'm going to need the entire crankshaft & rod assembly. Cranks seem to be fairly rare, although I can still get a connecting rod. Anybody have any ideas on a parts source? Obviously I'm looking at Ebay, but I want to get this project going and I'm not seeing anything out there right now. How does a GT80 crank/rod compare to the TY80, are there certain years that are interchangable? Seems to be alot more GT80 part…

Does anyone know what the rear shock sag should be on a 1984 TY 250 mono? My 220 lbs [ rider and gear ] gets alot of sag, about 50% of shock travel. The shock only has reboud adjustment and no sag adjustmet. Did yamaha offer heavier springs for these bikes as an option? Thanks.

I'm trying to sort through a spark problem on the 84 TY 250 mono.... 1] Had the bike 4 weeks now, two rides on it, and a bunch of time working on wheels, carb, etc. When I got it, it started on the 3rd or 4th kick. It ain't like that now. 2] Noticed it's getting harder and harder to start, each time I try to.....needs more kicks. Had a plug fouling [ over rich gas ] problem which didn't help. Eventually it needed a new plug just to start it when cold, a lightly used plug would not spark. 3] Went for a ride today, as usual, was a bugger to start. With a brand new plug it ran however. Hi there folks i have just come across a problem when going to rebuild rear wheel with new spkokes and rim! the problem is do some ty 80s have a 32 spoke wheel and others have 36 spoke wheel? i have new rim and spokes whice are 32 and old hub which i have just repainted and fit new bearings and seals as 36 spokes! as anyone else come across this before cheers for any help!

hi i was looking for help on a ty 175 swing arm . finaly got the dome nut off the spindle will tunn byhand but will not knock out .any one any ideas or solutions ? cheers kev

Have been trying to find the right shock springs for my TY250. Have a couple sets of shocks with good dampening and am trying to find the spring that would go with my 160# weight. I have three sets of springs: The wire size seems to determine the spring rate: .280 wire in the spring give it to much rebound (bounce). .260 works o.k., .240 also seems to work o.k. Does anyone know how they rate springs? Also.....does it make any difference if you run the shocks inverted? This would clear the exhaust better. Thanks in advance. Alan

Can anyone recommend suppliers on the internet of oem patrs, have looked at tytrials speedandsport cmsnl None of these can supply things like the oil filler/dipstick or seat brackets, have no problem with making these parts if had something to copy so other option is buying which I've had no luck with Any help would be much appreciated

I've had this bike from new, recently returned to trials after 20 years absence and found a 98 Montesa much more to my liking. I'm thinking of getting rid off the old Whitehawk plus the Montesa and upgrading to a 07/08 250 Sherco. So what's it worth, reasonable to good condition, upgraded exhaust, chrome frame and all up and running in original red colours? Thanks for any help. Nick.

The 30year old manual suggests using 10/30 fork oil and 126cc in each leg. Does anybody use 5wt oil or any other weight ? Only asking as I use 5wt in my Beta and it would save me a lot of money if I use the same in both. Does anybody use the 120mm air gap principal (spring out) rather than measuring 126cc of oil. Hello again Quick question my recently aquired ty 250 twinshock has a home made alloy air box with a rubber flap riveted in place of the mudguard extension, Im hopeing to go back to the standard fitting yamaha mudguard and extension but only ever having seen a ty 175 box does any body know if its the same or can be adapted or will I be wasting my time as the volume will be insuficient . Does anyone know a good source for the lower extension as all places ive tried it is no longer avaliable even after market products. Thanks for your time John.

Hello I have just picked up two Yamaha TY250 Twinshock bikes today. 1 Is Complete the 2nd is a bit of a basket case but even the better out of the two bikes needs a fair amount of work to get it going. Had a little play about once I got them in the garage and one of the bikes is leaking fuel from the carb. There is two Pipe nipples on the carb,one is located at the back of the carb low down by what looks like a jet (this is a brass nut at the very back of the carb just under the air inlet)and the other is low down on the carb on the opersite side of the choke lever, Should these be connected to anything? I am currently rebuilding a TY 80 and was wondering if anybody can help me with a few queries. First of all can you tell me if the kickstart shaft from a DT, RD or TY 50 would be compatible with it. Next I would like to know what jetting to use as I am going to remove the oil pump to run it on premix as the pump is leaking and I don't know whether it will be reliable enough, and lastly what is the correct amount of oil to put in the forks as I will be changing the seals. I look forward to your replies thanks. No doubt there will be more questions by the tme I have finished.

I just bought an 84 [ as per the headtube badge ] TY 250 monoshock, Canadian version with the fire-engine red frame. The bike had supposedly just had an engine overbore / rebuild a short time ago, as per the guy I purchased from. It looks to be very well maintained, clean and tight, however, when running, the engine races on and can rev quite high once the throttle is blipped and often does not return to idle on it's own. When it does this [ 50% of the time the throttle is blipped ] I can use the brakes to bring the engine revs back down or unscrew the throttle-stop screw a little and the revs will come back to idle. Someone told me you could get a boost bottle for a yam 175 that goes between the carb and reed valve which gives it some more oomph is this true? and if so where can i get one from and are they any good and how hard are they to fit? cheers
