Twinshock

  1. Started by Cribbs74,

Does anybody happen to know the spoke lengths for the rear wheel on a KT? I need some spokes, but I can only find part numbers and can’t translate that to length- Thank you! Ron

Need a bit of help to get my head around steering mods on a twinshock. I've read about people fitting parallel yokes to alter the steering angle, rather than cutting and re welding frames. Does that not just shorten the wheel base and leave the fork angle the same? Just wondering whats needed to improve steering is it about the rake on the forks or the wheel base? Cheers.

  4. Started by Cribbs74,

Popped the head off of my KT to lap the head and replace the gasket as I had a leak. While in there I grabbed hold of the piston and noticed what I think is excessive movement inside the cylinder. I realize that it’s an aluminum piston in an iron sleeve so some play is normal to compensate for expansion, but this seems more than it should be. That said what should it be? Thanks, Ron

Guys, I am days away from riding my KT for the first time. Just buttoning up some odds and ends and having a little trouble with the clutch and throttle cable. I am using original cables and don’t see how they route. The frame has two plates welded onto the center tube and it looks like the cables could go through there, but not sure and no pictures anywhere in my shop manual or online that I can find. so my question is how do the brake and throttle cable route and what cable goes on what side of the downtube. Thanks! Ron

Has anyone on here used Maxton shocks on their Twin Shock Trials bike ? I'm curious what people know of them and are they worth the expense. Cheers.

  7. Started by Twinshockandy,

Anyone know if the motor of early 123/172 cota (red one) will fit into later 200 frame ? Am running a 123 with 400x18 rear tyre, and clearance in swing area isn't good to all.........easiest way would be to find a 172 swing arm, but they seem like hens teeth in the uk I'm aware exhaust/silencer is different on the 200 cota

Kim Nelson sent me a couple of photos he took at the Kansas City, MO national, probably about 1976. He says the KT250 shown was ridden by Steve Darrow, who I think is from the SF Bay Area though I didn't find him listed in the current PITS roster. The noticeable changes are no frame tubes under the engine, Miller muffler, and a KX250 clutch cover. The headpipe looks to be stock length, and not a long one like I built for my bike. The photos were rather faded so I did what I could to enhance them, but I'm far from being a Photoshop expert. Thanks Kim! cheers, Michael

  10. Had a fuel leak from my filter on Sunday, figured it wasn't a problem I'd just bypass it ... except that the filter has been doing a lot of filtering, and I could see all the rust going down to the carb after putting a new clear hose on (fortunately didn't try to start the bike, so I don't need to rebuild the carb!) So ... what's the best way to clear out the worst of the rot from a steel tank? I just want it to be ok through this summer really, not worried about a permanent fix. So far the suggestions are lead shot, vinegar, or just swill it out with fuel.

I was doing some research, on something else, in the attic but came across this. I assume somebody's wife was called Susan but can't recall what year this would have been - has anyone any recollection of the history of these machines? Described as "competitive" but, strangely, the twinshock class is not awash with them now

  14. Three weeks ago, while practicing on my newly minted TY, I managed to bottom out the forks. My first thought was that I've been eating too many mince pies, but then I figured it's time to sort the front end so off to the Majesty website I went ... One week later I tackled the same spot (moderate downhill with a 18" drop, then more downhill), and the difference is night and day! It felt like I was being gently lowered down the drop by little cherubs. Now, this was during a trial, and over all the bike felt far more ballanced with the Rock Shocks on the back and it did have a big positive effect on my confidence. Less stodgy, but harder to wheelie for some reason. …

How might the Montesa 348 compare to a similar period Bultaco, is the 348 a good bike to own and ride?

  16. Started by trialsrfun,

I believe that the forks fitted to Bultaco, Montesa and OSSA were made by either Betor or Telesco but which suspension company supplied each bike maker does anyone know?

Hi guys, I'm after some advice on anodizing wheel rims. I've got a pair of good condition old rims off a early Gas Gas I believe, the rear is tubeless but is the older type with the spoke nipples through the rim. The rims were a dull silver colour as common on most bike of that era. I took them to a small local Anodizing company who reversed the anodizing process so I could get the rims polished. They now are nice and shiny with no scratches. I took them back to the anodizing company to have them done black, I asked the knowledgeable gentleman to HARD anodize them but he was very reluctant and advised against it due to a high copper content of the…

  20. Started by turbofurball,

So, the Cota has a 28mm OKO carb on it (the original carb came in a bix of bits, and has a big chunk missing out of it), and I have a couple of questions ... Where can I find a rebuild kit for it? What's a good starting position for the idle screw? Where sould I route the tube that comes out of the float bowl? I seems to get pretty full of fuel for some reason, so I'm guessing the float is stuck (?) I'd really appreciate help with this so I'm not chasing my tail unnecessarily
