  1. Trying to figure out why my 84 ty does not have spark. The manual says coil resistance is supposed to be 240 ohms +/- 10%. My problem is I am not sure how you are supposed to measure coil resistance. The coil on the bike (Aftermarket)has a small wire going into it and of course the high tension lead for the plug comming out of it. Are you supposed to measure it from the small wire to a ground source on the bike?

So the 87 did not work out. The guy that owns it is fixing it up and getting it running again after it has sat for a number of yrs. I do however have a line on a 85 can am twin shock 350. Supposedly in great shape and running well for $600. Going to have a peek this wknd.
  5. The forks might not be as expensive to fix as you think http://cgi.ebay.ca/1974-75-BULTACO-SHERPA-T-250-FRONT-FORKS-SHERPA-T-250-T-/360347039613?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item53e65b777d

A 91 beta (Zero?) just came up locally for $1800. Price seems a little high but it looks pretty clean. He says it needs a new throttle tube, rear brake bleader and rear wheel bearings. Is there anything I should look for with these bikes. I know nothing about beta's.
  8. Are all the cables the same for all air cooled yamaha mono's?

I am looking at a ty175 for my boy. The bike seems to run ok but the shifter shaft has alot of side to side movement. How big of a deal is this? Is it an easy fix? Is this a common problem with ty175's?

The TY250 sprocket was only dished about 3/16 of an inch. I guess machining the old sprocket won't work for the TL250.

Ok so here is what I did with my 74 and 78 ty250. They have dished sprockets like the tl. So when upgrading to a 520 chain I simply cut the center out of my old 428 sprocket, machined it down to the right thickness and used that as a spacer. I think you could actually just put some washers behind the sprocket to act as a spacer (I have not actually tried that method though) No need to spend the $55 on a b&j spacer. Cheers ,Fergie.
  12. Yeah I agree, newer bikes are much more fragile than the old twin shockers and air cooled mono's. You could throw those old ones down rock faces and pick them up and have very little damage. Try that with a modern bike

How do you think your swing arm got bent? Are you sure it is tweaked and does not just need the spacer? It is unbelievable to me that someone could take off a dished sprocket and think it would be ok to just replace it with a flat one without a spacer. Some people's kids!!!!

So the bike in question is a 1987 AT300, the last model year for all Can-ams. He has not decided if he is selling it yet. Apparently it is a very low hour bike and is in great shape. The classic can-am webpage has a value list for all can-ams and it says that it should be worth about $1300. If I can get it for that I think I will take it

Thanks Steve, I will get back to you if I pick it up. I used to have an old qualifier 175 can-am. I think they were fairly good bikes back in the day. The rotax motors were very durable and powerful if I remember correctly. I just don't know anything about the trials models. There does not seem to be much info on them on the net. I do like can-am's and also trials bikes so it seems like a no brainer. What do you think a resonable price would be for one in decent shape?

A friend's father has a can-am mono that he might sell. I don't know the year of it. Can anyone one give me any advice when looking at it. He says he has not started it in a couple of yrs. and it has sat most of the last 15-20 yrs. Only starting occasionally. Any problems with the mono can-am's. All I know about them is that they were made by Armstrong in England until 1987 and they had a Rotax motors. I know chassis parts will be difficult to find. Are these bikes competetive with other mono's of the day. Also, what size rotax motors were in these bikes? Thanks for any info you can give me. Cheers, Fergie.
  17. will a m92 350 fit in a m80 250 frame?

do not put gear oil in the tranny. +1 on ATF though
  19. I have done a 520 conversion on a couple of ty 250's. Its the way to go for sure. The stock rear sprockets are dished and the aftermarket 520 rear sprockets are flat so if you go the 520 route you need to make a spacer out of your old rear sprocket. cut out the center of your old rear and machine the thickness down to the difference between the off set of the stocker and the new rear. install the new spacer to make the new 520 rear the same distance from your rear hub as the stocker. I think b&j racing sells the spacer and chain/sprockets you need .

Yes, those are the correct colours for the 77 Canadian ty's. There is a 77 250 for sale locally right now in Victoria B.C. Canada and it looks identical.

That thing is bloody gorgeous! congrats on the new ride . I wish I was light enough(215lbs.) to ride a baby tl. I like the tl250 but its very heavy. I might go for one anyway though. good luck with yours . cheers, Fergie.
