Beta rev 4t suddenly lost power and sputtered at higher rpm's. It starts, idles and revs a little with no problem. I took out the carb and cleaned the jets with little change. I noticed a large fitting on the carb with no hose or cap attached (pictured below).
Lots of interesting comments coming up here on this one.
Having worked with both electric motors and engines and gearboxes - in harsh environments and been involved directly with their design - I can say with absolute confidence that you CAN easily seal these items to prevent ingress of water etc. (think electric pond fountain for exanple)
A carefully applied seal comprising of a high grade silicone is all that is required to fix the issue with the leaking cover, assuming that there is no mechanical damage to the mating faces or indeed the rubber wire grommet/seal - so do check these as well !
To drill a hole is wrong. If the machine is then driven / stood in water it will find its way in be assured = damage!
I dont agree whatsoever that there would be potential issues with poping seals as suggested in an earlier post.
I need to check my own 4T on this point but if there is a breather (not ever looked to see if there is one ??) then ensure its clear and not blocked and is routed away from any risk of aggrivating the problem.
Knackerd - not surprised with a 280 Climber! Make sure you've got a slow throttle tube on and may be worth a head gasket or two to take the edge off, but just try and ride relaxed and enjoy.
I'd say it was totally possible to seal the cover and the cable entry (I did on my previous beta) using high grade silicone (worth buying ABRO manufactured stuff). Just make sure the surfaces are dry and clean and free from oil etc. Of course make sure the internals are all clean and dry first as well.
Drilling ? No you are only inviting the bad stuff in ! Plus the hole may block with mud and crud anyway.
Agree there sure is some talent there - is there the backing to deliver these guys to the world stage though ? Costly sure, but the WTC and interest levels in the US would benefit from some of our friends from the US joining the world trials circuit.
As a rider, I have some experience many moons ago as a novice. I have in the past, owned Montesa's and a Beta Rev, but as I consider getting back into Trials, I am considering a 4 stroke. The question I would like to know, with my experience, should I consider a 250 4T, or would a 300 4T be better. Any suggestions and experiences much appreciated.
This is very easy to answer.
You have selected the correct bike - Beta Evo 4 stroke, just go for the 250 version.
I was in a similar position to you 2 years back and riding a Beta rev3 200 - had a go on a friends 250 evo and that was that for me ! In fact I recall saying to my friend having done a lap of the trial we had just finised, that riding a Evo 250 was as close to cheating as was possible !It was that easy to find grip and control.
I have tried allsorts in between and nothing else came close for me , so I have now got one.
A 300 is more 'firey' and will actually be harder to ride (unless you can be 100% sure you can 'boss' the bike - where as a 250 will do EVERYTHING you will need to do and will feel like you are in total control.
Me in and out of trials since 13 year old (now 45 !) ridden and finished the SSDT / yorks centres / a few nationals in the past.
The 250 is for me the most enjoyable ride I have experienced.
Tip - make sure you drop one tooth off the gearbox sprocket if you are riding northern sections.
Doug had other bad luck as well as this - Marts bike broke down and as a result was unable to do his stuff for Doug on the upper sections on lap one.
Doug's still a class act and despite his problems he doesnt ever give up.
The top/highest most section (no 11 ??) way up in the mist, Doug fived the very last monster step at the ends (having come up all those steep energy sapping stream sections), not to be beaten by the section he re-lined the bike up and levelled it - only a hand full of people there to witness it, proves to me he still has the hunger and determination.
Great event big thanks to L&M,and everyone else concerned. Steve Colley's still a class act (but now with a better looking side kick than him ) - still up here on Holiday now and watching the video clips we took !
For Christ Sake ! Its still only July 2011 with current (NEW) 2011's stuff in the showrooms for hard squeezed dealers to shift !
2012 MY should blinkin' mean 2012 MY ! Tease the customers into the trade shows to view the new upcoming bikes. Importers realease 2012 stuff for demo only to dealers in mid November 2010.
Build the excitement ....... 2012 machines 5 months before the blinkin' date ! I'm lost for words !
Anyone know who the uk importer for Hebo helmets is?
I have a 5 year old Jeroni Fajardo replica trials helmet which is in mint condition and after a recent muddy trial I had pulled the peak off to give the helmet a good clean and when I left it to dry my Jack Russell grabbed the peak and before I could catch the little f***er he chewed off a corner leaving me now unable to refit it.
The helmet is in too good condition to replace when all it needs is a replacement peak (If I can get one)
Apico Uk in Burnley - but your local friendly trials shop should be able to help !
As for the dog - RSPCA for him.... well threaten him with a stay there at the very least !
5yrs for a helmet is nowt ! Only just 'retired' my Shoei TR1P (thinks ??) bought it around 1994 and still looks good thanks to JLF paint job ! Now hanging on workshop wall.
There is nothing wrong with Pidcocks wanting to sell the bike and make a living.
For those of you who don't know.
Thats how all business's work.
If you don't like the 4RT don't buy it.
For all the rest.
Its not Pidcocks fault if you can't afford it!
It's not a case of cant afford it - I dont want it at that exhorbitant price !
And frankly anyone ''queueing up'' to buy it simply has not done their homework, Yes business have to make money but they also have to deal in a way which they are seen to be fair. 9K is not fair, in fact i'd say it was a joke !
For all those wishing to form an orderly queue for this bike at Pidcocks.........better take something to amuse yourself with whilst you wait - as I can't imagine there will be may others in the queue with you to chat to !
OK we all know Brits aren't renown for their happy disposition or great customer service - although I have nothing but praise for Normam Blakemore at NJB and the guys from tytrials.co.uk - they have been great.
But recently I have been looking to buy a pair of pants and MotoxMatrix (on Ebay) had a range of what I thought were suitable so I contact them via eBay and asked them how much for postage to Australia ... a fair question and I got response from a Suzi quoting 14 quid - no problems the item was listed for 20 days - I took my time and eventually I decided on the pair I wanted and clicked Buy-Now ...... bid rejected!! Tried again...bid rejected .
I sent them a message and they responded "you are on the blocked list we only put people on there if they bid and do not pay? I'm afraid we cannot take you back off" to which I replied "That's ridiculous I requested a quote on postage ... I have never bid with you - I have 133 (eBay) deals 100% positive feedback" - that was last week and no response.
Now it's not that they rejected my bid or incorrectly accused me of bidding and not paying - I am P'd off that they don't have the common courtesy to acknowledge they were wrong - let alone apologise. So I have no qualms about naming them and my advice to all non UK buyers is don't ask MotoMatrix for a quote on postage - I know I won't!
Sounds like they dont deserve your business ! Spend your AUD elsewhere sir !
Not what anyone would expect by way of service, as you said you have have had good service from other 'Pom's' - they are actually the norm here in the motorcyle world - not the exception.
I buy quite a bit of equipment from Australia and find that its a pleasure to do business with Aussies and thats the way it should be both ways !
Maybe take the point up with Ebay with a complaint ?
Sorry I cant help with info for the correct type of plug, but I'd say from your descripton that a new (correct) plug would fix the glitch you are having.
I have just seen a picture of what looks like a yamaha 4stroke engine in a new tubular frame with yamaha wrote all over it! It was been ridden by one of the ex world level riders...
Anyone know if this is on it's way or just something someone has thrown together?
Any chance we can share / see said picture - that would help alot !
I have only ridden a friends machines (one of the first ones to arrive)- have to say that its one of the nicest 2 strokes I have ridden but too early to say how the engine will feel once fully run in.
My observations are - poor steering lock (to lock) - can be modded to increase this though.
Can be a pig to start - its a deffo technique of no throttle required which is hard to accept and get used to, plus my friend has since had the mapping altered by the importer (Who btw is doing a good job with these new machines contry to that said by an earlier reply)so his bike could be now better at starting.(not tried since)
2 of my mates who have them think they are the dogs wotsits.
The ride is as good as anything else out there.
Good quality and well thought out.
I applaud Ossa with this machine - it deserves sucess. They need the alternative engine sizes to widen its appeal imo.
Since changing from a 2 stroke to a four stroke my results have gone from a usual 5-10 place to a 1-3rd place ! And if any thing with less practice time to help !
One post has claimed that the four stokes are more ragged than a 2 stroke - what the hell 4 stroke have you been riding ???
My Beta 4 stroke is very smooth and whilst it is a 'communicative' engine (more so than a 2 stroke) my 4 stroke cannot be described as ragged ! Its soft and smooth and has been instrumental in me being able to up my game - very glad I made the swap and I would not go back to a 2 stroke.
Just said on the late news that the road was shut all today. From the TV pix it looked to be centred on the lane that is just below the Garden centre - Bradford side.
I would have thought it will be all open again by Saturday (although I can't ride that one as I am at a wedding )
