Thanks for those inputs. Yes I think the trailer is a no go for the discrace it could bring in the event of holding up traffic & unhitching it in order to reverse it, & I take your point about the comfort factor for the passengers (afterall I do have to consider accomodating them equally to my bike, so I'll look into the comfort factor a bit more on the Dispatch/Exper/Scudo. They do seem good on economy. As I am due to change my car shortly I thought that the Peugeot 406 would be ok for all purposes as long as it could handle a rack & keep the bike high enough off the ground. It is a bigish vehicle so would either of you know?
I'm really not interested in cars as far as whats the point in buying any vehicle that is too nice when it sits in the street at the mercy of vandals etc; so if I go for the rack any suggestions on the best car to comfortably handle the rack & are the wheels of the bike held up high enough off the ground when going down bumpy roads as you sometimes do at a trial? I uppose a Land Rover Defender would be lovely for this but not at the cost of one to buy and run. Cheers

Hello All, Anyone know how The CItroen Dispatch faires up as trials transport for 2 bikes. If possible i dont want to go too big as I dont need a van for any other purpose so it would double as my regular vehicle. I cant stretch the

I know it is perhaps expense he does't need but there is a very very good trailer called the GT1 that can be dismantled in a few minutes, perhaps that would be the answer. It is very over engineered & capable of transporting Big road bikes. It has apparently been used by the AA to recover bikes. It isnt cheap but will last a lifetime & is more economical to buy than a van in the short/longterm. I suppose a van would be an option because presumebly he has a car and somewhere he parks that. Hope this helps.

Lovely bike, with the Kehin carb it should swing it for me & I really like the white plastics. It should have a white front mudguard. I am up for an 08 now my minds made up, yes indeed. I just hope the stator problem doesnt spoil an otherwise really nice bike.
-
Jimmy, everything you have highlighted is spot on & the very reason i really want one above all else. I guess it was only the price that was leading me towards Beta and i wanted to believe i was getting the same reliable quality as the Mont...but how could you be in all honesty. I can see myself biting the bullet and just doing it with the Mont. Quality and reliablity is everything and its not exactly without power for a clubman is it. I like the 08 its grown on me..Its between the two and has been for a while so a couple or few months down the line and I'm sure i'll know for sure.

will super unleaded be high octain enough for it to run at its optimum?

How do you mean 'load up'?

Dream machine have them, they used them on my repainted tank and it is identical.

The wings are gold. The red white and blue ones are for the 250.

Well if the New 08 Beta is really sorted then i might give it a look, I'll wait until i hear of any problems and keep using my current bike up to the end of the year.
-
Ithought as much its good to hear it from someone who has done it. How long could i own the Beta without any rebuilding work, I am what i would describe as quite an experienced novice if that makes any sense, I dont do splatters but dont shy away from high climbs and the usual medium hard obstacles. I intend to enter more trials in a more committed way when i get my new bike but until now i just practice.
-
What 4 strokes have you rebuilt. Yes i agree that its a bit more involved but timing them up is not that hard. I could do that but of course the replacement of valves & springs and the other obvious things like rebore i would hand to the shop due to not really having the tools or know how, well replacing valves i could do but not the rebore. Its just that i heard it was more expense and i was a little concerned at the cost of replacment cost of EFI parts. A bloke at a trial i was at last month said he had a problem with this and his bike was in the shop at the moment.

Thats confidence inspiring

I have posted this question in the Montesa forum also so i have posted here also so as to get balanced opinion. Sorry Andy i dont usually repeat in Forums.
Can anyone tell me how many RPM's the 4RT revs to & how often it needs rebuilding. I am thinking of buying either an 08 Beta Rev 3 270 (so long as the stator problem is no more, ive been told its now sorted since enquiring) or a Montesa 4RT.
I like the 4RT better but with its more complicated engine i am wondering about how often it will need a new top end and the comparative cost against the 2 stroker.
My theory says that a low reving 2 stroke engine has got to be roughly about as reliable as a high reving 4 stroke engine & when it does need rebuilding it is allot cheaper.
I havnt heard of a 4RT going bang other than at championship level but someone here might have experience of it and the cost. I would like to hear some knoweledgable experience sand advise. These questions are basically to assist me in getting nearer to a buying decision at the end of this year.
I am just as undecided today as i have been a few months back about which to go with in 08 & I am one of these people who likes to iron out and eliminate questions before i take the plunge to buy. Cheers.

I know what you are saying Barry, most of us would expect to replace certain bearings and rebore the bike at least once in three years (depending on amount of use & level of riding) but a stator shouldnt be EXPECTED to go in this time as Scorpa3 says. To be fair i have not spoken to anyone who has an 07 bike where it has happened & as you say perhaps it has been sorted now, i really don't know. I would like to buy Beta & was planning to but was put of by this & the Mikuni carb (well the Mikuni was not really going to stop me but the stator was significantly enough of a concern to prevent me doing so). I agree that in every other way they are tough bikes; thats what is dissapointing, and i agree they are certainly not overpriced. Basically, its not the cost issue that im getting at, its the quality of this part. Personally i would rather pay a bit more for reliability & quality than pay X amount less for poorer quality (I'm certainly not refering to the rest of the bike, its very tough). To summarise i suppose im saying i dont want the anoying inconveinience of sorting a potential reoccuring problem & because of that i resent the extra cost to boot. If i can be reasured that the problem has been adressed for 08, i will still be very interested in Beta's Rev 3 when I renew my bike at the end of this year.
-
Yes i agree the example you gave has been all too familiar with my findings from talking to other people and reading others experiences. Yes all bikes can cause problems but this is a fundamental floor which has unfortunately, seemingly become synonymous with the manufacturers name with allot of potential buyers and previous customers. It seems to have caused allot of people unecessary expense, inconvienience & a ruined trial that cant in most cases be blamed on the owners maintainance routines.
-
Thanks for the input, i have never considered Sherco before & wondered what their reliability and build quality was like. As i am trying to make up my mind between a few bikes when i replace my old one at the end of the year.
-
Indeed Scorpa3, I dont find that at all acceptable. If only Beta knew how many sales they have lost, Two of my friends would have been Beta buyers but one says he will go with Scorpa because of thier quality & the other Sherco. We would have all liked to support Beta, we love the bikes looks and ergos but who wants the irritation and cost of an unreliable bike, it kills the fun stone dead, especially when you have paid good money for a new bike.
I would like to say otherwise but the facts are clear.
Lets see if they have finally, after all these years bothered to make the 08 bike what it could have been 5 or more years ago? I'll only ever know from others report in the near future. God knows how long the evolutionary improvements will take with their 4T, I'd never have the confidence to buy one and find out.

Thanks for that info Stu. So tell me; why do these stators keeping packing up? is it due to moisture build up or just complete rubbish componentry. Someone else told me they had electrical problems that didnt just end with the stator but also a duff cdi unit. If Betor has known about this since 2003 or whatever why the hell has nothing been done imediately to resolve it. In addition they have sold a tempremental carb in the shape of a Mikuni for ever too and must have had feedback from dealerships about customer dissatisfaction with both.
If Honda were aware of such a problem you know it would be a thing of the past within a year, because not only do the Japs use high quality components and materials but they leap on a problem as soon as its heard of and thats what i call a good manurfacturer.
Sorry Beta but but bearing in mind what i have heard and seen of your products faults being allowed to just continue i wont be bying one & its a sad thing because i really like the bike but what good is it if its hit and miss that its going to break down not once but in some cases a handful of times.
Looks like the Montesa get my money for delivering high quality reliability.
-
Its a real dilemma, I have heard some things from a number of people and read on internet reviews that the stator and the electrical problems were, as Scorpa3 said, beyond a joke. I knew they had annoying carbureta problems as that seems overwhelmingly agreed across the globe but i can just about accept that thats perhaps just something that ill live and deal with but i am not prepared to spend

I am thinking of buying a 2 stroke Sherco 250 or 290. I was going to buy a Beta Rev 3 but they have lost my confidence due to so many stories of electrical and stator problems not to mention that useless mikuni carb, can anyone shed any light on the quality of the Sherco please, regards Andy.
-
I was thinking of buying a Beta Rev 3 but have been really put off by the stories of electrical and stator problems, I am disapointed that Beta can manurfacture such a seemingly shoddy prioduct cos i really like the look of the bike, can anyone shed some light on this please, Thanks.

Yes agree with all im sure everyone has had your thoughts about chucking it in at some point but this comes when the critical competative element outweighs the fun and enjoyment element. Like i said earlier compete but get the balance right. If it mwant being in the top 3 or nothing else bike manurfacturers would sell like about a few hundred bikes all in cos everyone else who would otherwise ride but knew they would never be in the top 3 would not bother getting involved and the industry would go bust. Paradoxically sport pushes competition over fun and enjoyment often enough and that will do it damage if it doesnt sell the hobby/sport/passtime in any other way. I too get sick of some boring A***hole banging on about who's the best and who isnt, I just want to enjoy this for ME & my friends who getinvolved at the time. Compete yes but theres more to life, abilities go through high and low points in all areas of life and sport, should it mean you cant go on-No indeed not, im sure after a break you will improve and get past this point and reach a higher plateu. Enjoy like i said i bet im worse.
-
Yes enjoy riding the bike and enjoy yourself. Without enjoyment theres no point in anything regardless of the result. When self criticism and competition goes too far its not enjoyable. Dont pick holes in yourself, improve when you can and set challenges that are fun. Some might disagree but dont take it too seriously. If you got some mates or a mate that shares your interest its fun & more motivating but lets face it who cares if you F*** Up a section or 2. Some might say my attitude is a bit lasse fare but who cares, im not sure but i think ive spelt that wrong and im not even bothered see, enjoy the trial.
