  1. The Motoplat flywheel should have a small hole in the face that corresponds with a similar hole in the stator at the firing coil. You push a small (2.5mm or so) drill through both holes to lock the flywheel at the firing point. Hopefully, that should measure as the correct distance BTDC. If not, pull the flywheel and advance or retard the stator on the 3 adjusting screws, replace the flywheel (not too tight) and check again before tightening the flywheel. Remember, right hand side Montesa flywheels have left hand threads on the centre nuts. All data I have for Montesa gives 3.0mm BTDC Regards David
  2. Thanks Andy Forks look spot on but the current shocks are waay too long. That's how I got it. Rode a trial on Sunday and the front end was very twitchy and wanted to "tuck in". I have found a good pair of softly sprung 12" Boge Mulholland shocks that should fit ok. I reckon it'll be like a different bike. Regards David
  3. Hi all Does anyone know the standard lengths for shocks eye to eye and forks top yoke to spindle on the Cheetah Villiers trials bike? Thanks in advance David
  4. Hi All Which way round does the points cam go on a 37A motor? The cam I have has a "1" stamped flat on the one end that could indicate the direction of rotation. The cam has a steep ramp and a much flatter ramp on the other side. When the cam is put in with the "1" on the outside face pointing forwards, the steep part of the ramp will be effective for the points closing. The Villiers manual is not much help, but I'm sure the solution is something that every Villiers owner (except me) knows. Thanks David
  5. Lovely bikes Brian. Are any of your bikes fitted with a side stand? I'd like to put one on mine and need some guidance. Regards David
  6. I have a Pathfinder trials - very good condition but needs TLC (Don't they all?) Is that Honda Cub 90 ignition swop a straight bolt-in? I'd like to do that because the pathfinder ignition is desperate! What is the correct model bing carb used on that model? I have a feeling the one on mine is incorrect. I am going to set up all my vintage 2 strokes to run on Motul 720 (or 800) at 40:1 . Then they all get filled from the same can and the Motul is as good as anything on the market. Regards David
  7. One of those 350 REH barrel/head combinations came along with my Cheetah (which is currently fitted with the 250 REH barrel) I think the cases have to be machined out to accept the bigger 350 barrel. Is that correct? Regards David
  8. It is worthwhile to note that on some older Montesa models the fork tubes bend easily. Take out the forks and roll them on a flat surface. Granite kitchen tops are great for this! (yes love, the forks are clean.....) Mark the location of the bow "high spot" on the front edge of the fork leg with a little notch filed in at the top. Assemble the forks with the notches facing forward. Works like a charm! Regards David
  9. I have taken a look at a spare villiers front sprocket from the Cheetah spares. This one is an 18 tooth - part number E9149/1. If I have to replicate this with only 13 teeth the raised centre boss at the rear of the sprocket looks like it will be too large to clear the chain. Does anyone have details of a 13 tooth sprocket for me? Thanks David
  10. Good or NOS early water-cooled Honda clutch/waterpump side covers are as rare as hens teeth. A friend made one up using a pressed out alloy dish with the flat flange laser cut from alloy plate then welded it all together. In addition he fitted a new (and freely available) water pump seal. That photo was taken at the cover's first outing and everything worked just fine. Regards David
  11. Can anyone ID this (Villiers) cylinder that came in the box of bits with my Cheetah. There are a few pictures of the same cylinder on this link. There's a 5/16" thick phenolic spacer below the cylinder and it has a chrome bore. Regards David
  12. Hi Westyfield and Bantam James. My bike was first registered in Nov'68 and has a chassis number 1569. My frame looks similar to James' with the chassis number just about on the centre line of the headstock, 1/3 from the bottom. I have also replaced the rigid footbegs with bolted on plates/folding footpegs which are located about 1/2" forward of the swingarm pivot. Both wheels and the barrel are REH. Wheels have been laced with flanged alloy rims. According to the original invoices, this bike cost GBP249, including the barrel. Perhaps you can help me with some queries: What are the lengths of the standard forks and shocks? Has anyone seen a sidestand fitted on the Cheetah bikes? If so, what does it look like? Thanks David
  13. Hi All I'm trying to locate an old trials rider whose last address (2002-2003) was in Portsmouth. It's probable he would be about 75 now. Name: Michael EW Sainty. Does anyone know him? Thanks David
  14. Ok, I'll check the engine sprocket, then I'll get a 13/60 final drive sprocket combination made up. Regards David
  15. Hi All I re-built my Cheetah trials bike (37A Villiers motor) a few years ago, but have only now started to use it in classic trials. The bike was put together with whatever came in the boxes and everything fitted as it should. Today, I found the bike was definitely "overgeared". I have established that the final gearing on the bike now, is 15T/54T. Does anyone have an idea what it should be? Thanks in advance David
  16. I re-built my Cheetah in 2009. Send me a PM and I'll see if I can help. Regards David
  17. Thanks, will look for the head stay. Regards David
  18. Hi All I have two Cota 123's and a Cota 172 which will form the basis of two finished bikes. One 123 and the 172 frame have broken at the front downtube at some stage (and been badly repaired). Were the frames known to be weak and if so, does anyone know a strengthening fix for them? Thanks in advance David
  19. Hi All I have just acquired a 1965 Bultaco metisse Model 11 . It's not really a trials subject, but is there anyone out there who can help with advice on this model? Regards David
  20. Hi All I have two Cota 123's one of which has a 21" front wheel, as opposed to a 20". Both have the 17" rear wheel. As I'm planning a restoration of one bike from the two, is there any problem with putting an 18" rear rim on the new bike, along with the 21" front? Regards David
  21. Hi All This is not really a pre-65 topic but I'll put it out here: I just acquired a B25, oil-in-frame rolling chassis. Where would I find the frame numbers? Thanks in advance David in SA
  22. Try 200cc per leg as a starting point. That's about what you use in Betors and Ceriainis if the same vintage. Regards David
  23. Yes they look like a dustbin or soup pot. My 350cc barrel has "REH" stamped on the bottom I've posted some pics of the 250cc REH barrel and the Cheetah trials bike with the barrel fitted http://s215.photobucket.com/albums/cc198/f...Cylinder004.jpg http://s215.photobucket.com/albums/cc198/f...00-1844_IMG.jpg Regards David
  24. I've got a REH 350 (360?) barrel. It would appear that the villiers cases have to be machined larger to suit the larger liner. Can you send some pic's? Regards David
