  1. Yeah, I was thinking I could use a barcode reader or something like that instead of punchcards but then, i was getting a bit carried away as I tend to do Anyway, I used the system for the first time at the Belle Isle trial this weekend and it ran sweet When the scoring cards were handed in, Oliver read out the tallied scores whilst I typed them in. After that, I clicked The Magic Button button and it produced This Score Sheet After that, just checked for clashes of scores and entered the MC against the winner and pressed the magic button again and was done. The total process took just less that 15 minutes Anyone interested in using this for their own club.. Contact me at webmaster@breiddenhillsmcc.org Regards Ian p.s. Note for Bikespace. Im going to train Kirsty on how to use it and she will be using it then for her trials in future, If you want a copy, drop me a mail.

    Sherco 3.2

Many thanks for that info Ishy I will do that !! RE500, When i first got the bike it was a complete bitch to start but I went for a Trials Holiday down at keepyourfeetup.co.uk in devon. The Farm owner Gary Wright has a long history with bikes and his father was a mechanic to Malcolm Rathmell in the late 70's. Hes got some of his fathers old 4 strokes locked away and knows a bit about starting them !!! He saw the way I was trying to start it and said I was using the wrong technique What I was doing was kicking it over like a 2 stroke fast and furious and blipping the throttle!!! He started it is 3 kicks when i was taking around 20 or more !!! From cold, he put the choke on and gently kicked it over for about 4 strokes. He took the choke off and gently kicked it over a few more times feeling for the compression stroke. when he felt it he gave a firm ( but not fast) kick with follow through to the end and it started. When the bike is Hot, I gently kick it over ( 1 or 2 times ) and feel for the compression stroke. Then give a firm ( but not fast ) kick to follow through and it starts nearly everytime. Also, the other important thing is you use no throttle at all. I have followed his advice since and its been fine Hope that helps

    Mr Isherwood

Great pics of a great bike So glad I bought one
  5. Gaz, You were right with your first statement If you have a new rider that isnt in your databse already, You add them to the bottom and run a macro that sorts it into alphabetical order. Then when you go back to the Entry Sheet, you can select his/her details from the drop down menu and it will put them in. Its all in the same workbook so you only need to select another tab and enter it if your thinking its gonna be a hassle opening another workbook to access the database.
  6. Ok, I completed the Beta version and will be testing it live this weekend. Take a look at this write up I have done in our forums to see more information about it.. Scoring System Details Post any comments or suggestions here please regards Ian

    Sherco 3.2

I saw Simon Evans (Expert) riding the Sherco 4T at our local trial and was amazed at its graceful seemingly effortless power delivery and humungus amounts of grip. For those who dont know him, he is the son of Graham Evans who works in sales at David Jones Motorcycles in Newtown. I spoke with him about it and he had nothing but praise for the machine. He also said he tried the 4RT but didnt like it in comparison. I ride the Sherco 290 and decided to buy the 4T. I got it on Saturday and done around 30 hours on it so far. This is what I found: Performance [1] Very powerful without doubt. feels and sounds it [2] The balance was superb and felt very much like the 2T [3] The power delivery is fast but you have to be about half second in front with the throttle than you do with the 2T. [4] Traction is awesome. Torque is there in bucketfulls and pulls from nothing to arm stretching without any effort. [5] Downhill braking using the engine is something your going to notice bigtime over the 2T. Even on a semi slippery slope, you can ease it down there in control. Problems I had [1] It was a bitch to start . Traced it to dampness under the sparkplug cap.. WD40 applied and it normally starts on the first compression stroke. Doesnt need a lot of effort either. Stroke should be smooth and follow through to the end. [2] The exhaust gets VERY hot in seconds from starting. I got a nasty burn on my leg on the first day. Needs a heat shield guard on there for sure. [3] The wiring loom comes out the generator cover straight up and over the engine mounting bracket to the coil on the right side. This cabling is tight and i can see this cutting through the cables in no time at this point. Will put something around that to protect it. [4] I noticed an oil leak from somehwere around the top rocker cover. On inspection the seal was completely dry !!! Found it to be a leak coming directly out the barrel casting where the engine is mounted to the frame. I took it back to David Jones today and he is fitting another barrel. EDIT: It appears the oil leak was from oil travelling up the inside of the generator wrapping and dripping out onto the coil then the exhaust pipe. NOT from the barrel casing as originally thought ! Overall, Im really happy with the machine. I like to ride quite slow so this machine suits me. The clutch might as well not be there half the time.!!! Got a few problems to sort out and ideally wouldnt have liked to have them, but Im going to stick with it as I know this bike is worth it.
  8. First bike in 1972 onwards: NSU quickly ( first bike I rode but not mine ) Honda C50 stepthrough BSA Bantam 175 Fantic Super T Moped 6 Speed ( tuned to do 70MPH !! ) Fantic 240 Armstrong 310 ( seized it up in a water section whilst practicing ) Kawasaki KDX Enduro 175 Suzuki RM 500 ( Crazy bike. Gravity had no effect on it!! ) Big gap of No bikes till 1989 Kawasaki ZX10 ( kept it for 4 months and sold it before I killed myself! ) Big gap of No bikes till 2005 2003 Sherco 290 which I just sold and now have just bought a Sherco 4T
  9. Horse's for courses! Theres a variety of ways and software you could use do do this! The list is endless I considered other ways of doing it but I settled on using Excel primarily coz I have a good knowledge of it. I think most peeps have Excel already so dont need to purchase any software. They know at least the basics as they use it now and It can do virtually everything thats required. We will see how it works out I'll leave the big scoring systems to the big boys cheers
  10. Ok Chris, Keep an eye on this thread and when its finished ( in about 2 weeks when im off work and have some time ) I'll post some details. Im trying to make it as easy to use as possible and will release just 2 or 3 copies of it initially for peeps to test it and give me feedback so i can fine tune it before I release the commercial version. regards WM
  11. Chris, do you run a trials club at the moment?
  12. yes, you can do it like that but there is a better way The version im working on now will lookup the data from the database and give you the full name to put in from a drop down menu like you described. All you need to do is use the mouse and no typing !! ( unless you have a rider that isnt in your database so you will need to add them ) I didnt put that in the example because all I wanted to demonstrate was the VLOOKUP function.
  13. I have made some progress with the system but im finding that there are parts of it that are be too complicated for someone with just basic excel knowledge to use. So, im having to use macros to do certain functions so should ease it up this is where im at: Created database : easy to use and add new riders details Created Entry Sheet page which takes data from the database Using a Pivot Table, formatted data (although still a bit of tweaking required.) Ive just had an inrush of work so I cant get to work on this for a few weeks, but I will have some time off work shortly and then sort it out I'll let you know when its done !!
  14. ok Rabie, Thanks for your efforts in getting me some info Ill keep you posted on how my Excel system is getting along
  15. Ok, I machined mine but how you could do it is take a piece of 20mm Dia. mild steel bar, drill a 12mm hole in it then cut out the slots with a hacksaw. Take a piece of flat bar say 13mm thick and file the ends so they are below 12mm thick. To use it, warm up the wheel hub (as TrialsRfun says above) put the drift through from the opposite side, place the wheel on the ground with the bottom of the drift on a hard floor. Tap the wedge in from the other side until it spreads it then lift up the wheel and tap the end of the drift and out pops the bearing. Here is a link to a quick 3D animation of how it works I can make one using a tapered grub screw arrangement so you can just tighten it with an allen key and it will do the same. Much more elegant but not easy for anyone without access to maching facilities to make
  16. What methods do you use to remove the wheel bearings? I am interested as I was told the bearing puller is expensive so I made an expandable drift that I put through one of the bearings and then tap a tapered drift into the end which spreads it enough to locate on the inner race and with some some mild tapping, the bearing comes out I made it out of a small piece of 20mm Dia. mild steel and cost around
  17. Im just doing this for trials only, Its to make my life easier for my club and hopefully at the same time, benefit other clubs too! Im not looking to make a living with it its just a hobby m8 I have had a re-think and am willing to look at designing and building an Excel based system for MX & Enduro also. The only thing is as I am not directly involved with these sports, I will need some guidance as to what is required. If anyone wishes to post some ideas then I will take a look

  19. well, Im about to change that That part is going to take a little bit of work but when I have finished I expect it to work like this: When the last digit is entered for the scores, all you need to do is select the championship standings worksheet and it will be fully updated !! sweet
  20. Rabie, The first spreadsheet is as good as any I have seen If peeps want that much information, then its no problem to show it The presentation sheet your 'Esteemed President' does is a top quality piece of work. What if i said all that could be produced in less than 1 sec albeit in a slightly different format. Individual comments he has made will still need to be entered though Extrapulating data for standings etc is what Excel is designed for ! this isnt a problem to do this. Dont know why no one is doing it? I will incorporate this feature in my Model. It wont be anything as sophisticated as the stuff on mylaps.com your refering to. Do you think they can afford the Fiver im charging for it? By the way, Here is a LINK to a quick excel spreadsheet I just done that shows how the VLOOKUP function works and how it simplifies the job of putting in riders names & details time and time again.. Note: Excel version I used for example was MS Office Professional 2003. If you cant open the file because you have an older version, try this link Excel version 97
  21. Well, when you have a new trial, you have a page with numbers down the left and in the first column to the right after the number, you have a drop down box which looks at your database ( all your riders ) . select the rider you want and it will put in the rider / class/ machine / and club / (and anything else you want ) in the columns 3,4,5,6 etc this is done using the VLOOKUP function in excel and continue till you have entered all your entrants.. when the trial is finished, type in all scores for each section against a number. This data is then taken and using a pre configured Pivot Table, present the data automatically without any sorting into classes or scores or whatever.. and no formatting either. 100% nice and clean every time. When I have completed it, I will send you a copy and you can be my chief tester
  22. thats no problem to do, just means if you have say 70 entrants doing 10 sections 4 times each.. someone has to input 2800 bits of data into a spreadsheet. If you enter just the total scores for each section its obviously only 700 . The data all fits on the one page as well . I done a dummy run on the spreadsheet im working on last night. I entered 70 riders ( from the database I made ) and produced a sheet like this one i posted earlier Score Sheet It took me from start to finish 22 minutes it took me 4 hours the first time Still got some work to do though till im totally happy with it!
  23. Yeh, thanks for that Telecat got the info and will ring them tomorrow.. I am intrigued to know how much it will cost??? My system I was thinking of selling for a fiver to help boost the club funds
  24. I have to agree . Im only just back into the sport after a spell away of 21 years and cant believe peeps are still doing it the same way as then Yes, I can make one work, most of the basic function coding is done.. just playing with the layouts now.. thats the bit that takes the longest as I like it to look good
