  1. Just out of curiosity has this bike had its frame replaced? The '09s were notorious for cracking frames. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the problem but stranger things have happened.
  2. I've always thought that was the prettiest bike of the era. Hope you get it back soon and in good shape.
  3. It's a question of what changes when the rear is lifted. is there stress on the subframe that is moving the carb and opening an air leak in the intake manifold? Is lifting the rear flexing the frame enough to open the centercase gasket joint? Is lifting the rear causing some wire to contact the frame? Lots of questions. Maybe the place to start is the description. Is it changing the attitude of the bike that is making the difference or grabbing the rear and lifting. Does having the bike with the rear wheel placed higher that the front have the same effect as lifting the rear by the subframe? Since idle speed is affected I think an air leak is still prime suspect. Spraying a small amount of starter fluid will tell you if you have a leak in the intake manifold or the crankcase. Just spray a short burst at different locations around the intake manifold and crankcase seal (center case) and see if it changes the engine note. It shouldn't. If it does it indicates an air leak. Make sure all your case bolts are tight too as this happened recently to a friend. He had a couple of loose case bolts and now has a case leak just under the intake manifold. I doubt that it is a crank seal leak as that would normally not be affected by bike attitude. It is possible to have a case leak into the transmission which is being sealed by oil when lifting the rear of the bike. That's crying time as it a pretty sure case split to replace the center gasket but he's probably looking at that anyway.
  4. Sounds like an air leak. Time to break out the hot start for a little spray testing.
  5. Because of the angle Beta mounts the carb, downhills tend to stall bikes with badly adjusted floats but I think this sounds like more of an electrical oddity since you've had the carb apart already. Beta kill switches are known to be marginal at best so you could try there first.
  6. I never quite got the whole shim thing as the actuator is somewhat self adjusting. My guess is the shims just reduce or increase the free-play before the slave starts pushing on the throw-out bearing. The first bike I did the mod to had lots of hours on it and still benefitted greatly so I'd give it a try on the old plates first. Besides if you bung it up terribly you haven't ruined new plates. 19Delta that's some neat work on the plates and unlike me I don't see any holes in your finger.
  7. Try the old plates first. Lightly dress the steels with 600 grit emery cloth. Polishing the fiber tabs is what makes the engagement progressive. Bender is great.
  8. It's all good! I put the same white fender on my '13. Wish I had waited a year though and got the white painted frame like my buddy's '14 factory. Probably the prettiest bike I've ever seen. I also went for the heavier springs courtesy of Steve Saunders. Bonus is I get to EMAIL one of my trials heroes. . I've also done the sticker kits from Steve for my bikes. Good stuff.

Bill was an active member of the North American Trials Council and a distinguished inductee into the NATC Hall of Fame. Because of Bill's passion, effort and remarkable leadership, the trials community has benefited in many ways. Bill Mathewson will be sorely missed and never forgotten. Please join us in remembering Bill with thoughts, prayers and condolences for his family.
  11. A friend has mentioned that he used these springs but I have no first hand knowledge of the results. You could try to get a set of the washers Beta uses on the newer bikes. They are stepped and would give you a few more options as far as setting the spring preload. As for the order of the plates I don't think it is important as they will have to settle in anyway.
  12. Mutual friend Chris and I were immensely helpful laughing at the massive glob of sealant that grew on the back of the engine case.

  14. Going home from Vegas Tuesday. Looks like nothing but mile after mile of trials sections out here you lucky *******
  15. Ok just couldn't get to grips with the Porsche. Weird shifter setup. I kept blowing shifts and turning the wipers and turn signals on. Instructor must have thought I was hopeless. I was relieved to see Linda screaming down the front straight with her blinker on too. Wasn't just me. Next was the McLaren and we just clicked. Lap after lap of neatly apexed corners. The instructor said, "That was excellent. You should drive the GT car. You can handle it." Phew, reputation recovered. I was going so fast in the McLaren I passed somebody driving the 430 Ferrari twice in five laps of a 1.2 mi track. Next the Aventador. Massive power but compared to the McLaren it wallowed through the corners like a moose on steroids. Wife did good though she came down with the flu right after we got here. Now I've got it. She wasn't sure about the Porsche, liked the Merc and ran off the track in the Hurrican. Then had to hurl when we got back to the hotel. Give her credit though for driving a 600 HP monster while sick as a dog.

  17. We've finally had a week of melting. Side of house still looks like this though.
  18. Oh I'm paying for it but what the hell. I think it's a 991. That'll be our warmup car.
  19. Just booked track time in Vegas with a Lamborghini Aventador, McLaren MP4-12c and a 911-GT3. Wife will drive the 911-GT3, Mercedes AMG SLS black and Lamborghini Hurrican. Wheeeeeee!
  20. Ok so now I'm watching the 2014 Marsaille X-trials. Yeah I'm a year behind. Raga and Caby are both doing the double bounce. Mmmmm tasty tasty crow.
  21. Father of several, Yes but none of the other top guys do and if there was really something to the technique I think they'd be on it like wrinkles on a cheap suit.
