I'd imagine you're fairly well in the "ball park" weight wise, the original is a fair lump of metal alright.
Yes, WES mentioned in their email that Inmotion would have them available to purchase.
Where did you get your own front pipe from, as it's a smashing looking piece from what I can see of it in the photo you posted. I thinking very strongly of doing a similar set up to what you have on the front section married to the new WES pipe for my own 199A, which is my next restoration project. Been trying to track down something similar from Spain but haven't found any one selling one yet.

The original factory alloy head steady and the later pattern versions are notorious for breaking, even from brand new. I bought a head steady from the chap who was at the Stafford show back in April and its a super set up, way better than the factory item. He was on the Old Codgers MCC stand in the Off-Road Hall, if you want to send me a P.M I'll send on his contact details.

Well done netley, its great to hear another Sherpa brought back to life.

Hi Larry
Apologies for not getting back sooner.
I have a notebook with all this info, bore size tolerences, ring gaps, etc and do you think I can find it! I've tore the garage apart looking for it and can't locate it, I wouldn't mind some of the information was written up over 30 years ago when I used to work with an old gent who spent his day boring barrells and truing cranks shafts. Will keep looking.
Your paint and polishing jobs have truned out really nice.
You're spot on about the clutch adjustment its trial and error, followed by refined adjustments.
-
That's great that it was a handy fix.
-
Have you done any work to the clutch, any adjustments, new cable, activating rod and bearing in correctly?
-
I did indeed smelling123. Thats a lovely job you did on the front pipe of you own bike. If you ever go into production give me a shout
The new WES alloy back box should be going into production in about 2/3 weeks and then ready for shipment to their retailers.
There is also the possibility of a powder coated version in black as well, however the initial production run will be in alloy.
I'm afraid I've no information on price or weight, however by my own I reckoning it should be well under the weight of the standard factory version.

Hi oldmxer
Welcome to the forum.
Perhaps the backward piston theory is a possibility.
I recall a 250 Pursang piston been fitted by mistake to a Metralla 250 GTS, the Pursang piston had a small port In the inlet side of the piston skirt (pre reed valve) and it caused blowback with fuel been blown back through the carb. But it did run "slightly" better with the choke on.
You've seem to have tried the obvious and still no fix. At this stage I'd lift the head and barrell and see whats happening in there.
-
Thankfully that job is already done.
-
I had a look at the WES website yesterday, but nothing was listed, so I emailed enquiring about availability and price. Will let you all know when I get a reply.
I will more than likely anodise or paint the first two thirds of it black to blend in with the front pipe and leave the last section alloy, for that "works" look!
-
It certainly looks good to me.
A repack-able back box is a massive advantage over the original rear silencer.
I'd buy one!
-
I see that Romeromotos in Barcelona now have newly maufactured clubfoot pipes listed on their website http://shop.romeromotos.com/epages/ec8165.sf/en_US/?ViewObjectPath=%2FShops%2Fec8165%2FProducts%2F%22ESCAPE%20SILENCIOSO%20BULTACO%20SHERPA%20ALPINA%20-%20ADDITIONAL%20INNER%20MUFFLER%22
They appear to be very true to standard.
To my mind it would be great if someone built an updated pipe (front and rear sections) which could be easily dismantled for repacking and cleaning purposes.
-
Now that would be interesting.

Welcome to the forum netley.
Here is a very well laid out fix you can read through http://www.motomerlin.co.uk/moto/betacarb.pdf
I also came across the following article as well, "Is your BETA drooling fuel? By Clark Pittman" on a Club newsletter from the States http://www.ntxtrials.com/web_newsletters/RCR0106.pdf scroll down to the 2nd page.
Hopefully this might sort your carb.

The postman has been busy calling to the house this week. My new shiny 199A extra wide bashplate arrived from Todotrials this morning, really impressed with it, a solid piece of metal that is as light as a feather and very well finished.
Ordered on July 4th, paid with Paypal, arrives at my house Friday morning, excellent!
-
Got the Mikuni carb in the post the other day, very neat and compact in comparasion to the Bing. Will have to wait a while before I can see how well it runs, as the M80 I'm putting together is first in the que to be finished.
-
My understanding was that the Model 80 was the last of the "Sammy Miller Replica" bikes from Bultaco.
The Model 80 spare parts book pages" below has "Miller Replica" decal listed as No. 37.
-
Hi speshal
Welcome to the forum.
You have the basis of a solid bike there, If it were me, I'd be looking at putting the original motor and frame back together. Getting the frame straightened shouldn't be too difficult, look out for workshops specialising in bike crash repairs, they'll have the correct jigs for putting it right.
Second hand parts are fairly readily available on the interweb, new spares are available from several sources in the UK and Spain. I'm also sure that some of the lads on here might well have a few bits'n pieces laying around in their workshops and sheds
I'm in the middle of one restoration, a model 80 and the start of another, a 199A, which I'm currently in the process of gathering together the parts for.
Work and family holidays have delayed progress in the last few weeks, but this Saturday, looks like been a solid uninterrupted workshop day!

Hi Larry2
It looks to me that you have a standard piston there.
Have you removed one of the rings and inserted it into the bore, so as to check out the gap in the ring with a feeler guage?
-
Having bought and sold Mahle pistons for Bultaco's in a previous life time, they usually came marked with 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.00 on the crown of the piston to indicate oversized.
Based on that, your piston appears to be Standard and not oversized. However I would like to see a photo of the complete crown (top) of the piston just to be certain.
-
Cheers bultacorock, I pressed the button last weekend for a Mikuni and will have it Wednesday next with a bit of luck. The airbox mod looks interesting as it would also appear that my bike (pile of bits ) has a 159 airbox along with a 199B air filter and inlet hose set-up.
Interesting what you say about the Domino levers over the Amal originals, will bear it in mind. Is that one of the Todotrials bashplates also fitted to your bike, how do you find it? I am seriously thinking of getting one as I was never a great believer in the originals, as to my mind they offered very limited protection.
-
Many thanks for the advice folks. I've decided to go Mikuni as I know them fairly well from days past.
-
Nice modification, you have also given me a idea for widening my bash plate.
Thanks

Progressing very well through the Model 80 re-build and I starts to hear the little voice. You know the situation, you're rounding the final bend on to the home straight of your current progect and all you keep hearing is the little voice saying to you, "what are you going to do for your next progect"!
Well the little voice got it's response, with the arrival into the garage yesterday of two boxes of bits containing 90% of a 199A. The missing parts won't be a problem as that well know purveyor of things Bultaco, has them listed on his wesite.
But my question is this, as the bits/bike do not contain a carb, what is the best approach? Is it a case of getting a replacement 2nd hand Bing or should I look at a Mikuni, Dellorto or a OKO? My reasoning on the newer type carbs is that I wasn't a big fan of Bings back in the day and found them troublesome especially in the float/float valve end of things. However back then, I was just a mere callow youth, with a lot less knowledge of how to set up a bike. Some would also say, that I haven't progressed much since then either.
Bear in mind I will only be using the bike for casual Sunday riding and nothing remotely serious, but I would like it to start easily and run as smoothly as possible. As ever any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi Larry2, I'm just up the road from you in Dublin and I'm currently restoring a later Sherpa T, model 80, which will need work done on the tank. http://www.trialscentral.com/forums/topic/60113-model-80-restoration/
Could you recommend the guy who did your tank and could you send me his contact details by PM
Many thanks
Pat
