I have a Clymer Publications 'Montesa Service • Repair • Handbook 123-360cc Singles • 1965-1972' manual which states that it covers an array of models from Cota, through Impala, to Scorpion (King Scorpion) and Cappra. Not sure if this would be applicable to your bike, but the engineering and technical fundamentals are all pretty common between variants; it's out of print and has been for years, but copies do surface from time to time. Might be worth searching online? In terms of a weak/absent spark, this issue is common and well documented here on TC; it's usually down to a faulty condenser, sticky points, incorrectly adjusted timing, stator degradation, poor earthing, or a combination of all of the above. I quit in the end ('71 Cota 247) and installed electronic ignition from Electrex World - solved the issue in an instant, which combined with a decompression valve (Venhill), makes starting easy. The fuel oil ratio I run with is 50:1 (synthetic pre-mix), which does create moderate smoke but ensures a well lubricated piston and barrel... again, for the Cota 247. Your enduro, if ridden hard, with regular wide-open throttle might need a different mix... regular riding/plug inspection should provide guidance.
  2. This is all VERY interesting to me, having been a 2T rider since the beginning. Very early days for me on the 4T, but it is absolutely night and day different to riding my 300 2T; the way the Mont pulls from almost zero revs and close to standstill, is pretty impressive. I'll certainly try the overrun technique explained above once the going gets snotty... makes perfect sense, yet I'd never have figured it out for myself.

  4. Thanks Johnny... this 4T malarky is new to me; just wanted to be sure there was nothing wrong. No, she doesn't boil, but man, that fan's earning its keep, the hard way.
  5. Just wondering how busy the rad fan is meant to be - pretty much, as soon as I hit any technical bits (2nd gear), the fan cuts-in (and out), on a pretty regular basis. Is this normal for the Honda 4T unit... compared to my usual 2T rides, which hardly ever necessitated the fan to intervene, this does seem excessive. The bike is new, fluids at correct levels and nothing obviously amiss. I'm considering filling with waterless coolant, but again, what is best? Anyone able to shed some light? Thanks in advance.

    Michelin do seem to be the most popular brand by far... I've just bought a 4-Ride shod with Dunlop rubber and haven't really noticed a significant difference between them, TBH. I guess a lot of it comes down to bike, riding style, running pressures and terrain/climate. In terms of longevity, I guess time will tell for me.

Just checking-in and updating an old thread: Disassembled the engine, checked piston/rings/cylinder, replaced crank seals, wired in Electrex World ignition and fitted Venhill decompression mechanism, fitted new seals, gaskets and the like... prodded the kickstart and... she only started, FIRST KICK! Can't quite believe I've been grappling (on and off), with the non-start issue since Autumn 2017, but got there in the end. A BIG thanks to all of those that offered words of wisdom, encouragement and comfort along the way - and to Yamanx for his generosity lending me the primary gear puller adapter... I'm so grateful to you all. WOOHOO. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
  10. Really straightforward job... save for removing the primary gear from the crank shaft - brace yourself! There's many a helpful guide on how to, here on TC.
  11. Thanks Clean... I wasn't sure if there was a specific thread/spec to the bolts. Will try some M7 Allen Screws and see how I get on. Cheers.
  12. Can anyone advise of a source of replacement crankcase cover bolts (clutch side), for the 247... or of the spec in order that I can pester my local fastener factor? I swear mine are made of cheese!
  13. I'm currently working through the mechanicals on my '71. There's a huge amount of information and wisdom available here... from folk that have pretty much, seen and done everything there is to do with the 247 - don't be afraid to ask. In terms of a manual, there are a few versions of the original Montesa publication available online, but I've found the Clymer 'Montesa Service - Repair Handbook - 123 to 360cc Singles' manual invaluable. It's been out of print for years but occasionally something pops-up via eBay/Amazon, etc. Its well laid out, with clear b&w photography and a logical, easy to follow approach to almost every aspect of repairing and overhauling the bike(s).   14. A MASSIVE thank you to Yamanx for his generosity lending me his puller adapter. Have to say, an amazing piece of engineering that made removing the gear a relative piece of cake... still can't believe how much force was required to separate the gear from the crank (air impact socket on a 3' breaker bar, plus gentle persuasion with a hammer - shocking the puller/crank taper at various degrees of tightening force), which I'd have failed miserably at were it not for the adapter! A true gentleman and a credit to the sport and motorcycling in general. Thanks so much.
  15. I purchased the Electrex World ignition set-up for my 247 last year as I was having persistent issues with starting and spark strength. As soon as the cases are reassembled, it'll be the next job to do... I'm hoping for a major improvement over the old points system which just didn't work for me (although many swear by the system and use it without fuss), so will keep you posted. Failing that I too, might be going shopping (for something with the word Sherpa in the title)!

  18. Running issues likely to be carb or electrical; pinking probably down to Octane rating of fuel... try a branded Super, such as BP Ultimate.
  19. Thanks again everyone - some really helpful advice and guidance (as always). I think I'll try the Machine Mart style puller kit and see how it goes from there - hopefully this, in combination with the hints and tips posted by others, should see the gear off and the job done.
  20. Dexron III is widely available and (in my opinion), does the job as well in the 315R - particularly when combined with fitment of dimpled plates - as the Elf oil. The 315's clutch is fabled for suffering with excessive drag... mine was unrideable until I changed the plates and reverted to Dexron III.
  21. I worked to 8-10NM when fitting new dimpled plates to my '98 315R. Filled the case with Dexron III and she ran perfectly... no drag and a lovely light action. Tighten the bolts in a criss-cross format to load-up the clutch mech evenly.
  22. Nice DIY engineering there. I was hoping to buy something suitable, but there's not a great deal of clearance under the gear and the force reputedly required necessitates a pretty robust tool.
  23. Can anyone recommend a suitable puller for the job... just about to delve into the cases of my 1971 247? Previously posted links to tools used aren't working. Thanks in advance.
  24. Hydraulic press. I invested in a 10T jobbie whilst rebuilding a Land Rover and thought I'd be glad to see it gone shortly after moving-on the Landy... not so, it's saved my bacon on several occasions since and will doubtless do so in future. Equally as efficient at installing bearings/bushes/whatever as it is removing them - ranks amongst the best £100 I've spent. Just be gentle.
  25. Another thread hijacked by the keyboard warriors... what happened to keeping things on-topic? "Mainstream" (route to ownership), as in buying a Gas Gas, Beta, Honda, etc... nothing to do with material science. Would be nice if people read the thread before deploying sarcasm.
