I shop around for the best deals ‘cos prices do vary significantly. I keep a small stock so the 540ml doesn’t really become an issue. I stick with the recommended gear oil (plenty of alternative views on the forum tho’) From a usage perspective, you are asking if you can save the cost of 40ml of oil. At say 22 quid a litre you’ll save 88p....? I am planning a - pre Brexit - bulk panic buy when I remember to do so ?
  2. I read speculation that the 301 could be inheriting some of the mod's from the works bikes of Grattarola and co’ Anyone got any real insight (not speculation) into what Montesa/HRC have done with these 300RRs?? I appreciate they are not works bikes as such but they do have indirect factory support
  3. The Repsol has Showa forks and shock (Tech and R16V on 4RT), DID rims (as opposed to Morad), more capable front brake calliper, S3 alloy pegs, Renthal bars, Carbon on Forks, RH casing and Exhaust front pipe and silencer cover. Repsol is also shod with Michelin boots rather than Dunlop as standard. The paint, decals and Oh a grand or so in folding! I think the peg hangers and stuff are pretty much the same from 2015/16 on. Mainly down to the suspension parts, they do feel different. When I was buying I was on the look out for a "good lightly used one" and would have been happy with either model.... but if you get the chance ride 'em both.
  4. Completely agree with the economic argument and Bou's performance. But I'm still watching and waiting to see what the new model looks like ?. Half of me wants to see something radical, half of me doesn't want to think that my 2016 model is old news.....the other half of me wants to buy a new 2019 300RR cheap when its essentially the same as a 2020! With 3 models and a chunky price difference across the range, HRC do have scope to push the envelope a little, particularly with the 300RR. When you consider that many of the components are bought in units - forks and shock - Tech, Showa etc. - who have their own R&D and so some development opportunity comes from the supply chain. I also like that there are plenty of aftermarket upgrades around for the Mont - I think the HRC ethos encourages this. I take comfort from the fact that the 300RR's shorty brake lever fits nicely on my bike and am saddened that an Italian exhaust manufacturer has whipped 1100 quid out of my pocket ? Long may it continue.
  5. Thanks for the responses, much appreciated. I've gone down the new wheel route. When will the bleeding stop... ?
  6. Yep. Been keeping an eye out. Decent ones are pretty thin on the ground tho’
  7. Hi , I want a spare rear wheel for my Mont 4RT, it’s a Repsol. Would those in the know recommend buying a built wheel or buy the parts and assemble? I ask as a quick search of built units seem to yield mainly Jitsie and if I’m spending a chunk then I want the right product. I know the originals are DID, is there any point looking at OEM? It would be good to know what others have done and recommend. Thanks, Reg
  8. It all went wrong when it became ok for riders to wear Lycra... Put all riders in crusty old belstaffs and wellies and see how high they can jump from squatting..... problem solved....? I wonder what the FIM are doing as regards TV and Media coverage? The Arena events in particular I find as interesting as watching paint dry. Monster trucks runs it a close second...it’s that dull. No TV coverage = No money I don’t have any answers but I do feel strongly that the indoor circus is a major distraction. By contrast I would love to watch a blow by blow from the SSDT (closer to heart of the sport). if we could somehow distinguish between indoor and outdoor, stop and no-stop, natural and artificial, Lycra (Spandex) and Waxed cotton we might just be in a better place...
  9. Thanks Mat, this morning I fitted the Future Trial bracket and light weight capacitor. I moved the chunky old relay up under the headstock, cable tied the small capacitor to the upright on the bracket and used a cable tie to keep the brake reservoir upright (in effect the reservoir is suspended from the frame cross member under the seat area. Whilst I didn't like the idea of cable ties actually it worked out fine. Once removed the bracket and capacitor are pretty heavy items! As Konrad says cheap capacitors can be unreliable - I have heard this said. I went for the Future trial capacitor - I figured the Italian guys have always been strong on auto electrics ? Let see how we go! Cheers, Reggie
  10. Hi Mat, Where did you get to on this? I have the same issue - thinking I'd ditch the overweight capacitor and bracket - I bought the Future Trial bits. Scratching my head wondering about reservoir and small capacitor mounting. I've ditched the bank angle sensor and tidying the area is a good thing to do but it seems I have half a solution... Cheers
  11. Hi OCD I'm right with you, just a few months behind. Very different ball game now and real fun trying to get half decent technique together. The folk on the forum can help with pretty much anything trial related. Good luck ?
  12. Mattylad has a point, when all the world's best are fiving, there's something very wrong. So it rained...., well there's a surprise, did nobody consider this when they set up the course??? No contingency plans really? Where the organisers???? Also, I don't know what others think but I felt the coverage, from any media source, has been very poor. The FIM website, TrialGP (points to a YouTube page with no content) both rubbish. Free to air TV - in the UK&I - the best that can be done is coverage one week later. Honestly, a complete shambles, this is supposed to be the world stage not some backwater event. Contrast and compare coverage from SSDT, not a lot on TV but decent video logs and web updates to all. Poor show, FIM needs a kick up the ar5e.
  13. I like that Steve0. Very neat, What's the glue? I've used some twin-air foam as temp measure but will be putting mesh on. On the same thread Jimmyl was recommending some mods.... Done. I've stripped out the catch tank from under the headstock and deleted the return from said tank to the airbox, blanked the hole in the airbox. So now, I have the gearbox breather pipe draining behind the left side frame, sort of level with the footpegs, and cylinder head breather up to the headstock thro' in-line fuel filter. Don't know what I've achieved but it feels good ? Got rid of the fuel breather gubbins and have a flush button. Got some S3 digit levers on as I broke a lever last week. Never had short levers so jury's still out. Geared down to 9/41, feels more like I'm riding the bike and not vice versa... Out of the spare parts I've made a small octopus which I'm thinking will hang from the rear view mirror......rock and roll.
  14. Jimmy1 Many thanks that’s great info and advice. I’ll get busy stripping the yards of hose! Much appreciated. Cheers, Reg
  15. Thanks thall1. Ive had the tank off and can see the white plastic tank. Looks like there are pipes connected, haven't had a real close look yet, will do that later. I'm intrigued as to what is to be gained by dumping it as jimmyl suggested...
  16. Ahhh that helps. So no worries about the gauge of mesh then. Thanks a lot ?
  17. Cheers. I had seen a couple with mesh under the vents (in the dip of the "seat area" right?) and wondered 'cos you can see the electrical connectors and what not - is it just a mesh and tape job?? Where's the oil catch tray under head stock Jimmy - can't see anything that looks remotely like an oil catch tray... Sorry about the dumb questions, my first 4RT!
  18. Thanks 2stroke4stroke, I'll do that. Got myself a case saver too.. Ready for off...
  19. Thanks Jimmyl, that's what I hoped to hear! I am going to compete, after years away, but don't expect to be setting the world on fire. I've got a Mitani bash plate coming (went for the 5mm as opposed to 6 as I'm not going to be doing anything really heavy duty), Mitani stand and that's it so far. I have thought about the air filter protection and the bike has the std splash guard under the rear mudguard and I think this should be ok...I'm in the south and it's not like there are the rocks and streams that you regularly ride up North. Cheers
  20. Hi, I wonder what the forum's thoughts are on maintenance. I have just bought a late 2016 4RT which has clearly had next to no use. The seller reckoned that it has been used for no more than 3 or 4 hours. Gauging by its good nick, tyres, paint, wheels, casings I think so. Certainly never been trialled and looks like it's been stored in a dry place. The manual talks hours and annual/bi-annual checks and works. I have changed engine oil and filter (was Honda OEM and probably this is its first service), gear Oil, plug and air filter. Given its age and not its use should I be doing anything else or am I good to go? Runs and starts fine. All thoughts appreciated.... Cheers, Reg
  21. Just to round off. Picked up the 4RT Repsol today. It's barely been used and certainly never trialled, just like a new one! Got one of those big trail seats and toolboxes with it (the bay beckons).. My first time on a mono and it feels great, sort of bouncy and very lively. No doubt be off the back in a flash ?
  22. Hi rr62, Good to hear from you! Well things move quickly in Herts (apart from those cyclist types in the lanes.. ? ), today I put a deposit on a 2016 Repsol - I understand it's done just a few hours, looks like new - all being well I will pick up Tuesday/Wednesday next week. Having stepped back from the precipice of ordering a 300RR, I concluded that it would probably make little or no difference to me. Nash Mills (Berkhamsted MC) is a practice ground just down the way from me and I understand that Hillingdon & Uxbridge is a decent club too - I'm in West Herts and I plan to join both, can't wait. I was looking at Inch Perfect - they do have it all going on up there eh?! Will keep you posted on my progress. It would be great to hear about the local scene from you. Still eyeing the lycra with caution ?
  23. I'm sure this is a well trod path... I started off looking at used but well cared for machines...within the space of a few days I find myself looking at a new 300RRs. Worst is, I think I can justify one to myself. Although I've spotted a nice 2016 Repsol (the 2016 seems to have been the leap forward for the 4RT engine-wise and I think the shock and forks are the same as they are now 2018 - at least on the Repsol) and they have other new machines there too, am off to have a look to see what's what next week. Turning up with a new bike and all is not my preferred route but I have a plan....A while back I bought a Landy Defender and a chap in a beat up old ex army number pulled up alongside me and offered to sell me some mud.. I think i could employ the same tactics here ? I have a serious question tho' - Is the Repsol any good? Forget the value argument versus the std 4RT, just does it work any better? Cheers, Reg
