  1. Not to worry, Raga rode right over it everytime. Just his last loop it went flying. Did not matter that day as he won the event! We all love watching Bou, but its good to see another rider get a wn. I doubt Raga will ever get a win again. He has had a great career! Thanks for the memories Adam.

  2.  Yeah, I have seen Adam abuse that starter in person. Right after he was screaming No fair, No fair in my face and I just pointed to the split marker on the ground he spun off with his rear tire. He was fortunate that day. He beat Bou at TTC in 2013.

Yep.  It was only after watching friends spastically kick at my bike that I realized how this could happen.  The sound made me cringe...  DO NOT start you full speed kick from the vertical 12 o'clock position.  First, take up that 10-15* or so degrees of rotation until you feel engagement/pressure/resistance, then kick from this point.  Nothing to worry about if you follow this guideline.

    I own a 20' TXT250.

Actually you are wrong. You can engage it and still be at the top. That is what you need to get it to spin enough. But you are right, not everyone can do this right. I had the first 300 Raga sold. (yeah a dad from the tdn brought it to the states) I bought it from a guy that could not start it. It took me a year till I got it right. That year I let my son ride it as he could start it. Then again he is 6`5.

Regarding the "Rock & Roll-back to find BDC" method to start.   Aside from it being inconvenient/impossible in many off-road situations, is it any worse for the kick mechanism than any other method?  Since I'm applying far less force upon the lever and internals, wouldn't that result in less stress on the Bart gear and associated internals?   This is a sincere question.   Is there harm that can be done with this method?

I've worked on a pit bike with high comp motor where the owner broke the kick lever and internals from kicking it with so much force at the wrong point BTDC.

It's more to do with the gear being engaged before kicking. The older models the bart gear would chip a small piece off move through the idler gear to the primary gear and get imbedded. Then the bike would sound like the rod was knocking. You had to take a nagnifying glass and inspect the large gear on the clutch basket tooth by tooth to find it.

I also witness a friend get his score card at a national and break the clutch cover with one good kick. Fortunatly the U.S. importer was standing there to. He pulled out a new cover and seals. We got the bike going in 45 minutes.

I think we're all old guys lol. You still do competition? That's pretty damn cool! That's a serious relief to know the you can slide the transfer out of there. Case splitting is a pretty big deal. Well it was for me anyway. That's mighty nice of them to spare us that fun. I had no idea you could slide that out of there. Where can you buy service manuals for these bikes? I have the print version owners manual but the only service manual I can find is a download. I'd prefer print. Do you know of a source to give those? That's cool that you compete. Williamsport PA is the only club I know of and that's hours from me. I wouldn't just like to go watch those guys

Yeah, I started trials in 1972  I could still ride expert if It did not hurt so much the next day!  I turn 64 next week. My son rides very well. He rode his first event on a gas poweted bike at 30 months old. Lol. I have two grandsons that ride. 14 and 15. Hopefully I will see my great grabdson ride too.

  6.  Yeah, they made the right center case so you could slide the transmission out without splitting the cases. Since KTM has most of the parts made in China now, we really have not seen many problems or many real trials riders buying Gassers. Gas Gas used to be the best selling trials bike in the USA. Beta is still the best selling world wide. Since I am old and slow ( I did win my class Saturday, but quit Sunday after a clean loop. C Bob was right, I needed a cold beer!) I ride the Montesa 301, but a very trick one.

  7. Yeah all you new guys have no clue about the reputation of this motor. And I can`t believe KTM is still selling it. The transmission broke so much they changed the cases so you could fix it without splitting the cases. I made alot of money working on these motors. On the flip side, the motor is awesome when working! LOL I think the last Full transmission I replaced was on a bike that was almost 7 months old. So out of warranty.

  8.  You do not have to roll it back. What are you going to do when you are stuck in an awkward spot. Which happens all the time in trials. You just slowly kick it through till you can get the kicker just before top dead center. That is the lever is up as high as it can be to get a better through kick. You also have to get the lever to engage first. The kick starter gear is called the bart gear as it is only a half moon verses a full 360 degree gear as most bikes have. Like Bart Simpsons hair cut. That is one of the weak spots on the gasser as the gear chips off quite easily. The other weak point is the shift drum. That is why the shift lever is designed to bend easily.

  9. Captain  b. You guys have managed to get this 23 Gasser thread to 6 pages. All the while not fixing the bike or anyhing to do with actually riding one. If we had a moderator it should be moved to the USA thread. God knows that thread needs some help. Or post it under the 4 newbies. I think you all might be drinking the kool aid yourselfs. A lot of BS about nothing.

Any how Butch, it will be great to hear if you ever get that thing running or not. You might even get to ride it someday. Or you could use that bike stand to show it off in your nan cave. LOL

  10. They have been called many things through the years. Not a new idea. It traps all things. Water, mud, dust etc..

I bought a bike that had them that had been sitting for a couple of years. Forks had huge pits in the chrome. Dumb idea. My first trials bike had a set. The bike came from the original inventor from 1971. I bought the bike in 1973. I could find a pic if anyone is really curious.

  11. Unfortunatly that might not be the case. Gas gas started making thier own brakes through the Hebo brand and they had a short longevity.

Myself I would RUN  away from a Gas Gas that old. Do a little research with real dealers on availibilty.
