  1. Benj if you look at the Macclesfield club website it has links with a number of local clubs including Man 17, plus a list of trials in our area. Also their is the weekly' Trials and Motocross News' a paper which comes out every Friday and then their is the ACU 'Cheshire and North Wales Centre site which I think you can access from either the Macc or Man 17 sites. All provide good info and the Gas Gas crew at Buxton are all regular competitors and organisers of trials and would give you some good pointers too and the shop is worth a visit!
  2. Benj, if you aim to get there for about ten then all the riders will give you some pointers, you probably know that people at trials are ultra helpful. The Hipwell brothers are both decent lads although you'll get more sense out of Kev (Factory Kev) as his brother Andy (AKA Father Jack) will still be half cut from the night before!! Just heard I've got the day off so looking forward to one of the best trials round here.
  3. Ended up with a few bruises myself too, and my arms are a foot longer after that half mile section we were trying at the beginning! Enjoyable day and if Dan got himself a more modern bike he'd be cleaning up - literally!! Hopefuly see you next week at the Hipwell. Pete and Andy.
  4. I rode the clubman route at this trial last weekend with my lad (last time I rode was years ago and it started from near a viaduct enjoyed it then too but just not got round to entering since). What a superb event with cracking sections, thanks very much to all of the organisers, its got to have been one of the best trials I have ever done, great scenery, great sections and superbly organised. The sad note of the day was to hear of the Midlands centre regular who died of a suspected heart attack and our thoughts are with the friends and family of a fellow trials enthusiast. Eiger.
  5. Ay up Physco, totallyagree, the Hipwell is a cracking day out, if things are getting difficult pal I'll lend you my Zimmer frame its one I got from Andy (Father Jack) Hipwell when he decided to go for the deluxe version with a blue and yellow paint job. And it already comes with that special smell of cabbage and pee! As my Dad says: "Enjoy life while you can son as its a case of a long time being spoon fed cabbage and stinking of pee!" Eiger.
  6. Yes, sorry, I meant to type 18 inch. You were right first time, it is 14" cycle inner tube, an 18" is too big once inflated. Alternatively YOU HAVE USED WORDS OR A PHRASE WHICH ARE NOT PERMITTED ON THIS WEBSITE. PLEASE DELETE YOUR POST/TOPIC. DO NOT TRY TO CIRCUMVENT THE FILTERS IN PLACE ON THIS WEBSITE do a latex type version which does the job. The problem with the cycle tube is that you can pinch and puncture them.
  7. Just Yes bloody good trial, the Gasser made my arms about a foot longer compared to the Yam! After speaking to you I had a five and a few more followed with the Hipwell brothers giving me stick! My lad went for a few mile 'diversion! along the road (he's obviously colour blind if the flags are orange!!) Great day out though and glad you enjoyed it, had a superb and rather painful handstand on the bars after burying the gasser in a deep bog on route to the third group. My lad looked the other way, and my mate Phil Turner peed himself (although he is now at at that age where it happens normally!!) Great day and cracking sections too. Regards Pete.
  8. A cheap but effective jacket can be found in the cycle wear dept at www.towsure.com only four quid - its clear PVC with mesh vents under the arms and velcro fastening at the front. Similar to those worn by professional cycling teams. I also go for a cheap pair of waterproof pants,

    Advice

XXX If you want a chat and a look at a few Gassers come up to Hawks Nest this Sunday if you are available. Its just out of Buxton on the Leek Road, If you don't know where it is then PM me and I'll let you know.
  10. Good evening BR3 and Mac. Thanks for the comments but I have declined Ellgren for now - far too gaudy for my liking!! The Yam was causing the hernia to re-appear so I had to re-consider a lighter option. Not only that but my 17yr old lad has been putting me under pressure lately so as a last-gasp attempt at retaining some dignity I had to make a quick decision. So a GG300 was purchased from my brother who paid well over the odds for the Yam in p/ex (It cost me to get him drunk for the deal but was worth it!!) Its got some power, if you cracked the throttle open on the Yam it would think about it for a day or two before responding, but the Gasser is too quick and has a much higher IQ than I will ever have!! The Macc and Man 17 trial dates are accessible via the Macc website, keep your eyes open for the J Mac and Hipwell trials dates along with the Dave Rowlands and Northern Experts. Tried to get in the Reeth but didn't make the ballot, will be camped out on the lawn of the secretary next year just to make sure!! Just to add that we entered the Loch Lomond 2 day this last weekend and despite mixed fortunes this has got to be a trial not to miss, superb sections, scenery and a cracking bunch of people involved in organising the trial. Eiger.
  11. Had a go at the LL 2 day this year and was extremely annoyed with myself for not having done so earlier in my riding career. What a superb event, location, and a cracking bunch of folks who organise and run the event. First day was a one lap - 50 mile route taking in 40 sections (all off road so my lad and his mate even had a go on there none-road-legal bikes) with breath-taking views over 6 1/2 hours, second day was 2 laps (12 mls per lap) of 25 sections. Its going to be a priority next year so get it in your diary!! Eiger.
  12. Get a new tubeless tyre valve, preferably a steel one, the original ones are alloy and are a bit weak. Also clean the rim and refit the rim tape with silicon sealant, allow it to dry overnight before you refit and inflate the tyre. And you'll have no more problems.
  13. Scotty I don't know if the symptoms are exactly like mine were but they sound similar. My Yam ran fine and revved cleanly when the bike was stationary but was very lumpy when actually riding it, surging and almost 4 stroking. I was practising recently when Chris Clarke (ex Hamilton cables Yamaha rider and still a bloody good rider) reckoned it sounded like the float height in the carb was too high. I can't remember what the recommended height was now but I think it was 22ml. So take the carb off, undo the screws from the float bowl and then reconnect the fuel pipe and let the carb fill for a few seconds, then take the top off keeping the float bowl perfectly straight and measure from the top of the bowl down to the height of the fuel. If the fuels too high (distance too small) bend the tab a tiny bit on the needle valve and retry . Check a Yam manual for the exact measurement (can't find mine at present - bloody kids!!) but since I did mine its been perfect. Eiger.
  14. We have to remember that the Police are made up of a cross section of society, just like the rest of the public, as has been mentioned earlier, and some are into bikes and some are not. In general most of them possess common sense and have something called discretion, a minority are not and will nail your hat on for anything they find. Sadly, the ability to use discretion and common sense is being consistently removed by the ridiculous practises imposed by the Home Office but that is another story. However, at a time when we are losing more and more land suitable for our sport we need to be completely road legal and should not be providing those who seek to eliminate off road sport with credible ammunition. If a member of the public contacts Police making a complaint then this has to be addressed. And before anyone says; 'well I once phoned for the Police after my house was broken into and waited hours', well I have been in that position, both as the receiver and the complainent and I could go on for hours about how things could be improved. But the fact is they have to respond to a call from the public and this would and does include a report from a person who has seen an off road bike driving down a main road with no number plate. Any person reading this who rides a bike which is not road legal in respect of having the correct licence, insurance, tax, and at least something like a legible number plate should take up another hobby because thay are jeopardising our sport. Eiger.
  15. Timp. I'll believe it when I see it! I could not get it right either, for every good ride I then cocked it up by having a bad ride! But thoroughly enjoyed the day out and as for your comments re YOU HAVE USED WORDS OR A PHRASE WHICH ARE NOT PERMITTED ON THIS WEBSITE. PLEASE DELETE YOUR POST/TOPIC. DO NOT TRY TO CIRCUMVENT THE FILTERS IN PLACE ON THIS WEBSITE and his YOU HAVE USED WORDS OR A PHRASE WHICH ARE NOT PERMITTED ON THIS WEBSITE. PLEASE DELETE YOUR POST/TOPIC. DO NOT TRY TO CIRCUMVENT THE FILTERS IN PLACE ON THIS WEBSITE, well I also hope it gets the support it deserves. He was up at Hawks Nest yesterday morning in the wind and rain setting some of the sections out for today then rode and then took time to take pictures so lets hope his idea goes from strength to strength. Eiger
  16. Mac, you should have looked for the blue smoke! Since the Boxing Day trial the Yam has been responsible for removing half of what is left of the ozone layer!! Have to agree with Timp too, excellent value at
  17. Anyone else ride Manchester 17 MCC's Fisher trial today? Two laps of twenty sections between Hawks Nest and Manor Steps and a bacon and egg butty to start the day courtesy of the butty van and the club even sorted the weather!! Another well organised event by the club and a good mix of sections on the clubman route, can't comment on the harder route but everyone I spoke to said the same. Eiger
  18. Heard that to ride these trials you need lights fitted including stop light off the rear brake, anyone enlighten me? Also my lad is 17 and I'm trying to get him through his bike test asap with a view to us both riding one of the French events. Does anyone know what the legal requirements are for a 17yr old and if they are restricted to a certain capacity etc? Ta Eiger

    Beta 4-stroke

Well folks I've got to be different and say I'm disappointed............................................ I've realised I'll have to get rid of my beloved Yamaha Pinky, get a loan and get one!! Sorry - hang on, the Missus is saying its her or the Beta...................................(big moan!)....................... ................................................................................ ........................................................................... CORRECTION - I'll have to get rid of my beloved Yamaha Pinky, AND the Missus, get a bigger loan, and then get one!! Yippee, a new superb looking bike and no more moaning about dirty trials clothing left in the kitchen!! (Will miss the Yam though!) Eiger
  20. Evening Betarev3, glad to hear your trip was worth it. Yes the Pinky got another outing, mixed fortunes as ever but a great day out. Got to go as the boy is threatening to tell everyone I had two fives on his section which is obviously not the case at all! Eiger
  21. Totally agree, great trial and superb sections, not sure about my choice of riding partners who both encouraged me to dab as much as possible! And to cap it all, the boy managed to bring his observer board home with him! And if he tells anyone that I asked him to rub out my score and put me down for two cleans I'll deny it!!
  22. My lad made a bike stand for his gcse project. He put a pull out tray and a drawer inside and cut out a hole in the top to drain oil and also glued some rubber to the top.
  23. Mac All this talk about money makes me sweat, I did buy a round once, it was for quite a few people too but I was only in hospital a few days so it wasnt that bad! Wulf gear is the way to go, you too will be wearing it soon and as for cable ties well rope is a lot cheaper. PS the cops at Macc are on the lookout for a yellow diesel van driven by either a Mr Smith, Jones or Brown, a well known drug courier who is known to use a variety of aliases. A strip search will be required and these boys are known to be a bit rough!! Regards Eiger!

    Yam Ty270

Cheers folks I'll have a look at the timing anyway and check what you've said Baldilocks, never knew they used the twinshock piston, good info. Cheers gents. Regards Eiger
  25. Ralph, just rebuilt the engine on the Yam including TY270 barrel and head the barrel has a shortened inlet tract. I've also lowered the pegs by about half an inch and fitted hebo pegs. Superb bikes but it runs worse than standard barrel, great bikes though.
