  1. Obviously not Trials forks, look Suzuki-ish to me. There is probably a logo or casting # somewhere on the clamps.
  2. I noticed less grip with the 803GP but I assumed it was due to fewer knobs than the Michelin, hence fewer edges to bite ( I didn't count them but since they are larger on the Dunlop I assume there are less). I too will stick Michelin fronts from now on. The 803GP seems to work fine on the rear for me and costs significantly less than the Michelin so I'll likely keep using those.
  3. In what dimension is the tread less? The individual knobs look larger.

    199A Setup

Ok I'm past the previously mentioned issues. I'm not totally satisfied with the way the steering feels, but it does turn well. I think I'd rather build an airbox than use anything I've seen available to buy, so I'll work on that later. My new question is how to get a little more over rev from the engine. I've geared the bike down to 11X42 due to the extremely tight Vintage sections that are common here, thanks to the proponents of Hodakas and TY175s that seem to be the most common Vintage bikes here. I find the gap between first and second gear a little bigger than I'd like, in some sections first is lower than I'd like but second is a bit fast. If I could rev first gear a little higher it would close up the gap a bit. I'm perfectly happy to run points and the bike starts and responds well, but I would consider an electronic ignition if it would let me rev first gear substantially higher, or would I be better off looking into the exhaust system, which has forty years of goo in it?
  5. New Betas also come with 101 link Regina.

That's what I have, the B model filter, it's just sort of pushed through the airbox and the foam has seperated from the rubber boot. I have to grease it well to keep it from letting dirt through. I've found replica airboxes for the 199A But i haven't found a source for the older style airbox, used Bultaco Trials parts are hard to find in the U.S,, any suggestions?

Another question has arisen. I have exhaust leaking at the head pipe. The 4 bolt flange and it's gasket look fine, but what seals the pipe to the flange? I'd like to know before I take it apart so I can put it back together promptly. Thanks all.

    199A Setup

Apparently that's what I have as there's no flat filter in the bike or any of the boxes of old parts I got with the bike. It came with a cylindrical filter that's glued to the intake boot. Is that the 199B filter?

I am rather tall and the top clamp sounds interesting, can you direct me to a source? I haven't seen one with the tapered bore for these forks.

Another question has come to mind. Does anyone run a 2.15 (WM3) rear rim on a Sherpa T? It's a very tight fit between the muffler and the chain guard, I'm concerned about clearance. The old rim is working for now but I've destroyed enough Akronts to know it likely won't last. I've already replaced the front.

    199A Setup

Thanks guys, You've convinced me not to mess with the triple clamps. I've moved the foot peg mounts and am using modern pegs. My rear wheel has a steel or iron liner, it looks quite worn though, the front still has the original chrome intact. The backing plates are worn, I'm sure the brakes I have can be improved with some work. I'm running a left side brake pedal that was on the bike when I got it, that works well for me as my particular disability involves my right foot and leg. After the last Trial a friend who lives out of town stayed over and we went trail riding on our Enduro bikes the next day, when riding through the rocks I found myself trying repeatedly to find the rear brake with my left foot.

Thanks for pointing out the pipe clearance issue, I wasn't thinking of that. That's why I like to ask about these things.

    199A Setup

I've made my beat up old 199A my only Trials bike and I'm enjoying riding it. I've had it for years but only ridden, and worked on it occasionally. I'm drawn to the Bultaco because I raced on them when in my prime. I don't want to make it into a modern bike but I think with some upgrades and riding it regularly I can make it work pretty well. Old age and decrepitude have relegated me to a lower class in club Trials and I find a vintage bike makes that move more palatable. I'm considering a couple of changes and would like to hear comments and advice. First, my airbox and side panels are hanging on by a thread. I think I recall seeing 199s with older airboxes and side panels but I can't remember what model parts were used and don't know if they would be available. I'm running the stock type Bing now but I expect I'll switch to a VM Mikuni at some point, to my eyes flat slide carbs just look wrong on a Bultaco. Second, I'm wondering about using Pursang or other triple clamps to take some twitch out of the front end, I'm running longer rear shocks. Are there riders here that have done that? Would I lose significant steering lock? Or has anyone bored out the top clamp and found a different fork and front wheel to use? A stronger front brake would be welcome.
  14. Which map is map 1, Clubman or Fajardo, or is it more complicated than that?
  15. The Gas Gas Contact ES hasn't made it to the states yet. I looked at this years Contact, which doesn't have the ES. To make it into a respectable Trials bike will take a tubeless rear wheel, two new tires, and a shock, at a minimum. It would probably cost less to add the ES parts to one of the Trials models, if that's possible.
  16. I'm in the process of selling all my kick start bikes. Electric start might get me a couple more years. I hope they hurry.
  17. For the benefit of the 378 souls that have looked in. I found out today that the "Vandal" model was slated for release this year but was, at the last minute, held back to be re designed somewhat, and released next year.
  18. Does, or did, one exist, or is one coming? I find multiple references on the web about a Vandal model with electric start, but there's no mention of it on their website. Does anyone here know, or has anyone seen one?
  19. I think PBI is the only U.S.company making rear sprockets for the TYs, the fronts can be found from many sources.
  20. Were the carb and exhaust from a running TY?
  21. I don't know, I was an MX racer, fine clutch control wasn't a big concern. It wasn't until years later when I started riding Trials that I learned the finer points of dirt bike riding.
  22. Do the fibre plates require more travel to disengage than the steel ones? On my Pursangs I used to shorten the actuator arm to prevent drag on the starting line, that was with Barnett plates and springs.
  23. Here are two Canadian contacts that have some experience/knowledge of the model, I'm sure there's much more in the UK though. http://www.outlawtrials.com/ http://cascade-motorsports.com/

    Ty Gearing

I just want to know what tires those are, they appear to have fantastic grip.
  25. Did you change the ignition flywheel, or the right side flywheel?
