  1. Has anyone taken weight off the flywheel to help the response at the bottom end, I am about to have mine skimmed but will guess how much weight/material to remove unless anyone has previous experience and can help out with the amount of material/weight I should be removing, thanks for any input

    Boost Bottle

I have just noticed that because my Ty has a non standard exhaust that I can fit one of the straight inlet rubbers from an LC without it getting carb too close to exhaust, so I am going to do that, I also thought I might as well try the boost bottle, where do I get the actual bottle ? is there a right and a wrong size ?
  3. I mailed John bull at rockshocks and got a very informative and helpful reply in double quick time, it appears to me he has a great attitude to customer service so looks like it will be rockshocks for me.
  4. Yes must admit I have not checked the condition of the cam, I will take that out today and have a look, just wanted to know if anyone has extended the arm with any effect, the levers are new but not sure what make, would you have any recommendations for lever make ?
  5. has anyone lengthened the clutch arm to give a lighter and more progressive action, I know it can't be lengthened much as there is not much room but would have thought it could be lengthened enough to make clutch feel better. (I rode mine yesterday for first time and found clutch a little heavy and was either in or out), before anyone suggests that clutch has a problem it is not that has it is all in as new condition including plates, drum, cable, pushrod, ball, mushroom etc. Thanks for any info.
  6. Has anyone any opinion on which is best shocks, Rockshocks or Falcons, I have made an enquiry about some alloy bodied Rockshocks, I know there have been reports of poor service from Falcon shocks, are the Falcons any better than the Rockshocks and worth the wait or should I just go ahead with the Rockshocks. (new to twin shock bikes)
  7. what was the new reed cage you fitted ? I am going to try bike with original carb for now, may go bigger carb of same type in future but want it to be a legitimate twin shock (32 year old one) bike, you can go on for ever fitting modern parts and end up with a bike that is more modern parts than original ones (which I don't want to do as I might as well buy a new bike !). Feetupfun I know what you mean about the 125's and a good point that, to be honest I had forgotten as it's three years since I last rode my son's 125 gasser in a trial, you are right they don't have much bottom end it's all done with lot's of clutch slip and high revs so probably not a worthwhile comparison to the carburettion on a TY175.
  8. I see where you are coming from with the small carb high gas speed for nice running at low rpm (andy t) but the modern 125.s all run with 26mm carbs so don't think that would be the case if a smaller carb was better, I was not wanting to go to a flatslide oko or keihin as that seems to be going towards the mono parts on a twin shock type thing, as you say I would consider putting twin shocks on a mono bike against the spirit and is actually against the rules of most twin shock classes (the wording is usually as originally fitted), I will probably try my rebuilt engine with the original carb and play about with jetting to see how it performs, I am more bothered about bottom and mid range than outright power, I am not going to be attempting to splat up an 8 foot step on my little TY ! I have seen some good mikuni copies, thay look exactly like the original carb and take all the mikuni parts, jets needles etc so may get one of those to try. can get a 26mm copy carb for
  9. has anyone tried a bigger carb on their 175 ? I have just finished rebuild of engine for my Majesty, it's now 185 cc with electronic ignition a DT head and gasket for more compression plus ports have been cleaned up and matched to liner etc, also has boyesen reeds, I am also going to skim flywheel a little to make it pick up a little quicker, thing is the standard carb is a tiny 22mm and I think it must be undersized with the mods that have been done, has anyone fitted a bigger carb ? I was going to go to 24mm and stick to a mikuni of similar spec to the original, is this worthwhile and would it be considered legal and fair for twinshock trials ? as usual any opinions/ideas much appreciated (also thought of going to 26mm as even a 125 gasser has a 26mm carb jetted to suit)
  10. Might not be the best opinion in the world but I had a 350 gripper a while back and I thought it was brilliant, at least as good as a standard tlr in the sections (and yes I have owned a tlr), felt light in comparison with the other spanish twin shocks with a better engine and suspension, brakes were still useless though, plus I thought it sounded great too, it was for me one of those bikes that took a step forward. would like one now but got too many things on go at moment (My Majesty 185 has precedence at the moment).
  11. thanks for that, I don't mind spending between
  12. Has anyone tried these shocks, they sound ideal for someone returning from a mono bike (me) to a twin shock, my mini majesty has oldish gas betors, is it worth spending
  13. Well the job is now done with a piston from nige birkett, I am really hoping it is not too noisy but don't hold out too much hope as we had to give it more clearance than I really wanted due to fact that piston has more taper on it from crown to bottom of skirt than was expected, I agree it is so disappointing to do a full and meticulous rebuild only to end up with a noisy engine, I have been told that it may be due to the cut outs in the side of the piston in the gudgeon pin area trapping gas from the transfer ports and creating the knock that sounds like piston slap, I know this varies on different pistons so that is a possibility as to why some pistons are quieter than others or it may be due to the amount of taper.
  14. I agree with TTS under normal conditions thats my oil of choice, the thing is the castor based oils are a better bet for seizure prevention and as I am running tight clearances thats what is important to me, I want to know if anyone has used A747, RX77 or equivalents from other oil companies ? just for running in, (about a dozen hours or so) then it will be on TTS, Thanks
  15. I am just about to finish the rebuild of my TY175 engine, have had it bored and tightened the piston to cylinder clearance up, I intend careful running in and hope the better piston fit will quiten down the noisy engine. question is, has anyone experience with using a better quality oil to help prevent a seizure whilst piston is fully run in, I was thinking of Castrol A747 or XR77 just for the first ten or so hours of running (it also has new mains) any recommendations appreciated, ps I then intend running it on Castrol TTS (after flushing the castor based oil out of course).
  16. victory is mine, the cases were stuck on the large dowel at the rear of the engine where the rubber mount is, it was corroded together in cases, had to use lots of heat to get it apart but it's done now.
  17. I think you could be right with the rear engine mount, it looks like it is round there that it is not moving, I have been using the rubber mallet (well nylon actually cos I find that rubber does not transfer enough of the shock to get it moving) Thanks
  18. Has anyone had any bother with spltting the case on the 175 engine, I cannot get mine apart, first one in 40 years of doing my own engines that I can't get them to split, they are moving apart ta the main bearing end but wont budge at the back of the engine, I thought there must be a hidden screw somewhere but have got a new set of crankcase allen screws to rebuild with and there are 12 and I have taken out 12 screws, is there something peculiar about splitting this engine ?
  19. Thanks for advice, I have now found a supplier (two actually) for +1.75mm pistons that are correct for Ty and not for DT as a lot of suppliers were trying to sell me, Thanks again
  20. Thanks Andy, I have sorted most of my problems with supply out now, can't praise JK Hirst at bradford enough and localish to me, I am getting a good quality +1.75mm piston from them plus lots of other good parts at a decent price, one word of warning for anyone looking at website, it is not working correctly so can't order online and some of prices are wrong, you need to phone them to sort it out, they are getting new site up and running soon, gonna go with that piston plus other mods and maybe electronic ignition, only trouble with iginition is I can only find one supplier and don't like to just go to the one supplier without having an option of another supplier with maybe a different price and different spec ignition, will post pics etc of my mini majesty when I get it back up and running, will just need advice on where to enter eligible trials round yorkshire area then.
  21. Can anyone tell me where I can get a good quality +2.0mm piston for my TY175, seen lots for DT175,s but they are apparently slightly different. Thanks
  22. Missed it, anyone know when it's on again
  23. I Think on the inlet rubber and air box I will modify rather than change the parts, looking at the inlet rubber it looks straightforward to match the existing one to the reed block (a short time with the dremel or die grinder should do the trick), the comments have made me think about the carb, I was going to fit an OKO carb but I suppose that is against the spirit if not the rules aof any twin shock trial I might enter. Still not found a supplier of a good quality +2.0 mm piston (and if I do they are apparently quite pricey) so unless anyone can point me in the right direction for a decent quality piston I might be forced into buying the big bore job from the majesty site.
  24. OK thanks for that Andy, is that a 350 LC or an air cooled inlet rubber (or either)
  25. Thanks for replies, I have been offered a 200 kit that fits into the standard crankcase mouth, I did a quick bit of calcualtion and I thought the same, it wont get up to a full 200 with the standard crankcase mouth, I know when shirty did the 200 he machined the crankcase mouth, that was not done for the fun of it, I will go with my plan of a +2mm overbore, all I need now is a supplier of a good quality piston, I thought I had found one but only to be told that the piston I was going to buy (for a DT175MX) was not the same as a TY175 piston, so the route I am going to go is the big bore, boysen reeds, skim head (I have also read that the DT175MX uses a thinner head gasket for more compression), and electronic ignition, I would then look to putting a 24mm flat slide OKO carb on in the near future, I am hoping this will be a good combination to keep or improve the bottom end at least as much as the mid and top end
