So,

Are most of you liberal or conservative?

Religious or not?

Against the war in Iraq?

I'm really not trying to stir things up (this time) I just haven't seen one post from the UK that's been conservative.

What's the ratio of Brits that go to church on Sunday?

What you going on about Brian? Liberal or Conservative? We don't get wrapped up in all that crap, anyway the liberal party in the UK is pretty much a wasted vote.

What you should perhaps appreciate is that the UK is not the closed shop that the USA is. We have a real issue (once again) with terrorism which is coming from within our own country as well as elsewhere. You spouting off about doing the right thing and getting stuck in is great when you're 3000 miles away in country with very little in the way of a Muslim comunity.

You lost me?

We have a fairly large Muslim comunity. Maybe not as large as the UK.

It only took 13 terorist to kill 3000 here. We all want the same thing I beleive. I didn't realize I was "spouting off". I thought I was asking a question.

If you'll look back over the years at any thread that brings up politics you'll see that within a couple of post someone is bashing away at MY country. Am I just supposed to ignore it? Would you?

Seems to me folks get madder at each other that should be on the same side than they do at the real trouble makers. The folks that want us wiped of the face of the planet.

Atom,,,,,,

You would rather have who??? The Demo nominee, or some mystery man that I did not see on the ballot when I went and checked a block?

I wouldn't have neither. The whole election process is full of corruption. To watch it sickens me to be honest!

Well I guess that would solve the problem... I guess we should what? Ask you who should be our president?

And while I may not agree with the democratic system, it is the one we got, I can either participate and try and improve it to my beliefs, while reconginizing that others feel different, or I can sit on the side and rail against the deal and say it is corrupt and makes me sick. Hmmmm, then I would be called uhhh (nah, I won't do it!)

He's not prefect, no one says he is. His biggest problem is his stance on illegal imigration IMO.

The thing is, he IS our president.

Kinda like if I punch my brother it's one thing, If you do it it's another.

I'm not real clear on UK politics but would you really rather go back to having a real Queen or King?

I'm not sure why your taxes are so outragous or why you even have a Queen for example.

Do your taxes partially still go to the Royal Family?

I don't have a clue on this like most Americans.

Why do American politics interest so many yet we know so little

about other countries politics?

We have a real Queen but if you mean one which governs our country then it probably can't be any worse than what we have now!

I'm not so sure either! Our taxes ARE totally outrageous. This Socialist government abuses the many people like myself who get an education, then work hard, risk everything to build a business and when it’s successful take a huge amount in taxes! We make a profit and the government takes 40% of it! And to see them dish it out to some low life who contributes sod all infuriates me. Grrrrrrr . phew.. quick , take a pill and lay down

I believe in survival of the fittest. That’s the rules of nature and it’s worked for the last 2000 million years or so :chairfall:

This Socialist government

Hahah! That made me laugh. Socialist? The only remnants of Socialism in the Labour party today are in the name and a little in lip-service.

The problems people always bring up with giving "our money to layabouts" is not really a problem of concept, but of form. The problem is that most contemporary governments (especially our current one) don't handle things well at all - just throwing money at a problem never fixes it. I think it's got a lot to do with the fact that capitalism has become so entrenched in our collective consciousness that we often seem to believe that a problem simply needs money thrown at it to make it better. Surprisingly humanity in all it's spectrum of existence really has very little to do with money.

Anyway, would you really want to see the UK do away with more of the good things earlier (actually mildly socialist) Labour governments brought in? We seem to be going that way, but the day we lose the NHS - not neccessarily in it's current form which is being stifled and eventually killed by ridiculuous policy, but as a general concept of free healthcare for all - will be a very sad day.

I'm not sure why your taxes are so outragous or why you even have a Queen for example.

Our taxes aren't outrageous considering we actually have the basis of a decent welfare state (that is being horribly damaged in image and function by the current government).

But leaving that aside, we have a monarch still thanks to all the political cutting and diving of the 17th Century. Essentially our first civil war did away with our royalty completely, executing Charles I in 1649 and instituting what was basically a military dictatorship headed by Cromwell until his death in 1658. Charles II was re-instated as king in 1660 (known as The Restoration) by a new parliament with shared power. Then later on in 1688, to put it very simply, Parliament didn't like having a Catholic king (James II) so they invited in William of Orange who marched in and took power in the Glorious/Bloodless Revolution. In order to prevent there being another Catholic monarch the Bill of Rights was introduced that also took away most of the monarchs powers, essentially leaving them as little more than a figurehead and shaping our current Constitutional Monarchy.

As to why we still have a monarch, that's a very good question. Perhaps because we've got so used to the system now as to not question it strongly enough, or perhaps because of our history we still associate our current form of monarchy with democracy in this country. I'd personally rather like to see the monarchy gone as they really serve no purpose any more beyond making the UK appear somewhat quaint and antiquated.

One thing I think of now and then.

If Germany had won the 2nd world war and gone on and ruled the world would we be any worse off than we are now?

Bleeding heck... are you serious? Ever heard of a small event known as The Holocaust? I'm sure things would be just fine, providing you're not Jewish, gay, black, Polish, Roma, or really anything other than the Nazi concept of Aryan.

Boof, could you define "closed shop" for me?

I have visited the USA on several occasions connected with my job, a member of the UK armed forces. It's difficult to get in and that's with all the NATO/allies relationship and diplomatic clearance (once had a sniffer dog on the plane while some 200 passengers had to sit an wait for an hour and a half for it to do its thing, but that

If you think his biggest problem is on immigration you obviously are an ostrich!.

His term in office has change the whole world in which we ALL live!

Any thinking non American should and are interested in American politics...the American way affects the whole planet ,and if you care to look outside your own backyard and delve into an old saying,"Money is the root of all Evil" you my get the picture of how your great country is now percieved by many.

I am not taking a cheap shot here Brian, but we get so many damning news articles and documentries on so much your government and its departments are responsible for, both openly and clandestinely, that it is hard not to believe its population can support such injustices.
