I'm actually surprised there hasn't been more folk on complaining that they didn't get a entry accepted, maybe the Pre65 scene is mellowing after all! B)

....or have I spoke too soon?

Don't listen to that Slapshot chap, he's out to make mischief!

ME!!!....Mischief..... B) ALWAYS

My pal Chris Haigh is riding number 68, so you will be pretty close to him, he's on a Velocette.

Of course, John Wright, Motorite Comp Shop once upon a time business partner with Vic Allan (well known Scotsman) Hook Road, Surbiton, Surrey. The very place where I bought a pair of 'Big John' Fenman boots, made by Maurice Arden if my memory serves me correctly!

As it's a rigid, then you should speak to Clive Dobson, he's the rigid specialist and rides a 500T, a man's machine!

The Pre-65 trial is more of an event than you would believe, it is quite honestly the best weekend of the year though the Scott comes a very close second....and be careful of that Big John chap...if you see him out in the hills, go the other way ... he'll be lost, though he'll never admit it

Anyway Big Chief Tight Wallet hope you and the Family have a brilliant New Year...from ALL of the Youngs

Gary

Responding to Big Johns comments here are my thoughts for what they are worth.

I have been lucky enough to ride a 500t for a total of 30 days in the Scottish pre 65, the likely problems you will have are

punctures

broken footrests

punctures

sheared rear hub to drum

puntures

You are about 10 minutes behind me on the same loop so you will catch me up I am sure as I always use the full six hours I have paid for. We will finish with the back markers on the Saturday and they can be helpful so be nice to them, even Munch.

The tyre pressure you run depends on how serious you are and how quick you can change rear tubes. I normally average one per day and we normally make a competition out of it. A mate of mine, John May still holds the record for changing a tube a few years ago near Callart. Your dad will know John through John's late father Reg.

Footrests take a real hammering and will break if you are not careful and prepared. One year I lost nearly an hour finding some welding gear in Kinlochleven to fix them during Saturday. It must be a sign of the modern economy I could have any kind of all day food but no welding gear.

The latest tyres and competitive spirit/modern sections have a habit of shearing the three studs between the rear hub and the drum. It is an awful design which tricks you as they feel tight even when one or more have sheared. Take them apart to check, if you want to know the mod let me know. A few years ago I sheared one on the Mamore Road and had to borrow a bike to get back to the Schoolhouse to get a spare drum to fix it. Back markers can be helpful.

Over the years the gearing on my bike has got lower and lower to make it rideable, currently it is as follows engine 13, clutch 42, gearbox 14, rear wheel 43.

You need to get it as low as possible to get slow enough in the sections not to get punctures.

Riding a rigid in Scotland is different to any other bike, for the others getting a ride is difficult and getting around two days is easy etc etc.

Having a good ride in Scotland on a rigid is very satisfying, after 30 attempts I finally cleaned Pipeline in 2008.

Useful Rigid type expressions,

I know there is not usually an official list of entries produced on an official site but any-one got an unofficial list they would care to share?

There is no such entry list, either public or private, only the trial organisers hold a current entry list. Then there is a list of reservists so that if someone can't ride for whatever reason then the reserve list is brought into being. I understand that those who have been accepted have now received a letter of entry confirmation, the competitor has until Friday 27th February to accept and provide full details of their licence and pay the full entry fee.

Those that are on the reserve list have a different letter and if someone drops out, then they may get a reserve ride.

Then you have those who have a letter and are not on the reserve list and they have no chance!

That's how I understand it. No list is ever released except to the motorcycle press, just prior to the event taking place. The full list appears in the official programme for sale at the start.

Oh and before the rumour mongers get started, I do not have nor am I privy to such a list. Individuals choose to tell me if they got a ride or not! So far, I personally know of 3 Scots riders that were unsuccessful!

Well, the ballot gods were smiling on the Allan brothers then, with both of them successfull in being drawn out of the hat (first time of entering too ??)

I never knew they were regular Pre65 trials competitors

Vic has a Dot now and Robbie has various Greeves trials bikes, including one that was used by Dave Bickers over the winter months when he rode for Thundersley. Robbie has been riding trials since 1955! (Robbie has ridden the SSDT twice I think) and Vic usually had a Sherpa courtesy of Comerfords in the 70's when he was contracted to ride Pursangs in MX. I have ridden trials with them both (in fact all three of the Allans including Jim the eldest brother) over the years up here in Scotland. Vic's first Scottish Scrambles Championship (the double in fact 1965) was won on a Dot hence his choice of pre-65 machine now.

Both Vic and Robbie have ridden the Pre-65 Scottish previously, they are not first timers! Last time Vic entered he rode Bob Pearson's Triumph/Greeves twin.

I seem to remember last year the subject of entries and bikes got beaten to death on here, so maybe people have either mellowed ...or really cannot be a***d....to comment further as it falls on continual deaf ears.

Big John, I have to give you a certain amount of credit for it would seem you are the Trials Cental Pre 65 Scottish public relations officer , defending any malicious word or comment , aimed at or challanging the intergity of the above trial and you do it well.

However, surely you must understand the feeling regarding this well versed subject, you must understand that many people just do not see the fairness in a what can only be described an unfair ballot. As well you know, with the amount of riders that do not even go into the "Hat".

It does irratate me as my previous comments on this web site obviously show.

There might be a few more comments to bat away before May, good luck.

Bonsoir

Frenchie, I think there are many people under the misapprehension that the three or four hundred people who actually enter are fighting it out among themselves for a very small number of the 180 places. I would seriously doubt that is the case. I am aware that there are a number of places held over for past winners but beyond that I'm pretty certain it's down to the ballot.

I know Big John has to go through the ballot annually and many other individuals who "appear" to get in whatever the scenario. My old man entered twleve or thirteen times out of the 25, he got in about half of those. For what it's worth, I've known the trial secretary for more years than I want to remember and would trust her integrity beyond doubt.

The system is as fair as you can get based on the extreme number of entries there are every year and while some people don't like that well, that's just the way it is. The trial has it's rules which you agree to when you sign the form, simple as that.
