nigel dabster
Doesn't tie in with what Julian told me last night when we were outside the presentation being dirty smokers. Yes, there was a little bit of frustration, but more than happy to walk away with second place. Mark summed it up. Fair play to Ian and also to Sam Not at all. I spoke to Alexz and he was frustrated/not that happy immediately after the trial, which he said would change. Yep fair play to Ian Austemule, just think it takes away a little to pick out one rider against another which mike did above.
atomant
He wasn't actually, mainly I think because he was so close and had dropped a 3 in the second section of the trial cleaned by allot of ordinary riders.I'm sure on reflection his opinion will change, rightly so. Third attempt and one mark off the win, terrific. Not too sure I understand mikes logic of why Austermules performance is more worthy. Haslam was in there too and never gets a mention. I would think when he has taken time to reflect, he will realise that that was some result he posted there. After all, he beat Dibs & Browny for the first time I believe?..... and then to be just 1 mark off Dougie! I know the lad is hard on himself but he really should recognise the value of this achievement. Good stuff Edited May 11, 2009 by AtomAnt

hillary
The reason I mentioned Ian Austermuhle specifically is because he is not a professional trials rider. Sure, the bulk of the entry are not pros, but I was making the point that in finishing third he beat all but the first two who are regular WC riders. I'm not boosting Ian for any other reason; inevitably, this column is always my opinion as I see it and I'm the first to recognise that others have different views. That's why I write it. And in MY opinion, he rode supremely well, so did others, like Jonathan Richardson, Richard Gaskell, Becky Cook in fact everybody did well if it keeps you happy. Why? Because they were there doing it and I wasn't and that in itself makes them special.
big john
As my friend Nigel Greenwood puts it: "A competitor is worth 100 spectators, because a competitor does it!" I have to agree with that statement. For sure, I would love to do the SSDT again, but I'm a realist and know full well I couldn't get round at my age and state of fitness! I'll leave it to the younger lads... Big John
windlestone
Scottish should be added as a world championship round in the same format and dates as is. It would give ordinary clubmen half a chance to rub shoulders and ride sections with Bou, Raga etc get away from man made circus sections and show everyone what the 'professionals' are like in changing conditions and changing starting orders. To see Dougie chatting with showing lads lines is fantastic.
totalshell
the most humbling is that its not unusual for dougie to arrive at a section and ask ANYONE what the line is.

Sorry can't agree with you on that comment, it would be nice to see the world stars riding, but in esscence, the SSDT is primarily a clubmans challenge. By making it a round of the WTC it would ultimately come under the durisdiction of the FIM and the sections would become impossible for club lads to achieve anything other than a series of fives. Plus I couldn't see the Edinburgh Club being forced under such draconian control of the FIM to be honest! The late Willie Dalling and Peter Stewart of Hamilton Cables resurrected/rescued the Scottish from death some years ago by reverting to traditional non-stop rules, the WTC involvement would hasten the events' demise I'm afraid. Leave it as is and lobby factories to support the event further! Big John
bigfoot
Do you think a rich sponsor coming up with a big money prize pot for the SSDT would bring the top riders in or do you thing money makes little or not difference? In the event that there were a few top riders clean for the week put the top five through through a couple of man made sections in front of the Alex to work out the winner. Maybe sudden death like a golf play off.

cota kid
I think it was a great effort by Ian Austermuhle and one worthy of a mention, the East Yorks Centre will be very proud of him, to finish 3rd beating some high quality riders is some achievement. Regardless of the likes of Bou & Raga not riding this event, what about Amos and Colomer?
ishy
It's hard to get a club trial right never mind the SSDT, but when it's right it's right and best let alone. Doug led the trial from start to finish, it got close a bit close due to a slack five at the very end of a six day trial, but he had built up enough of a lead to win, and the slack five didn't cost him the event. I agree with Hillary, Ian had a cracking ride, and both he and Wiggy will be thinking if only I hadn't had this three or that dab here and there, they both should be proud of thier rides, it was a tough week to be as consistant as they were. Roll on 2010 and the sun. The SSDT crew all must attend Hogwarts to pull them course changes out of the hat, class!!
