Interesting bike. Shame they never took off. What year is it? I assume it's yours if so are you thinking of riding it or is it too precious as it would be a shame not to use it once in a while

Am I right in recalling a works Maico trials bike based on the later motor, perhaps in the early Seventies? It was pictured in the weeklies and "we" certainly looked forward to a production version given the high manufacturing quality of the Maico motocross bikes compared to the other European stuff.

no it is not my bike.This Bike belongs to a good friend of mine.He was able to buy the whole collection of rare bikes from Hans Cramer's wife last year.Hans sadly paased away last february.The bike is a original works Maico from 1961.Hans rode the bike in the 1961 Lamborell Trial in Belgium.Maybe i get the new owner to ride the bike in a few trials.

Man,I've had many,many Maicos over the years,can't imagine one being smooth enough down low to trials ride...

These photos really are outstanding, a real slice of history, in the development of motorcycle trials, thank you for sharing them. I would even go as far as saying 'could make viagra redundant' (only joking). KTM had a similar project with Walter Luft, wonder how trials could have evolved, had Maico and KTM put trials bikes into production.

KTM used a Rotax motor, but couldn't get the rights as SWM had them at the time.

Designed by Emilio Carre from Milan, the bike uses a Tau motor. It was never intended to be built for Maico, but the bike made its debut at a 2 day Italian trial in 1983, with a rider who had a link to the Maico factory....hence the stickers on the bike.

Emilio had loaned the bike to Garelli for evaluation purposes as they were interested in geting into the trials market, but when they saw the photos of the bike with the Maico stickers in the Italian press, they returned it....and went the Hiro route.

Hmm learn something new every day. Shame it appeared so late just as the monos were about to take over. Does the bike still exist?

One of the 3 build KTM's you will see this year on the Isle of Man.Otto Richter from Austria will ride it in the Manx 2 Day Classic.

Thank's Martin to put Emilios bikes here.He also built a few Guzzi,Gilera's and Ossa's.His little 50cc Ossa with the Ducati engine is very nice.
