Always put the airbox assembly on before the fuel tank. What exactly is your problem?

Make sure you gently nip the clip part of the fixing ,that will ensure it stays nicely tight to the frame and wont fall off , gently with a pair of pliers usually does the trick

They are just an overall pain to work with. even when i nip them they tend to slid out of place when slide the whole unit over and onto the carb... I was thinking, maybe just some plastic pop-in plugs or something instead?

I have seen something that's a rubber plug with a threaded metal insert....are they called well nuts?

The ability to move is their beauty, you get the plastics perfect every time, guess it allows variation in manufacturing?

If yours are moving buy new ones they are v v cheap.

I am not sure about your application but sometimes you can replace clipnuts like you show with nutplates. The plate gets pop rivited to in place and the nut portion can still move around to align with the fastener. You may find these at a local hardwae store search for them on the web.

Google "Self-Locking Nut Plate, Floating"

i overcame this by using 6mm cage nuts just file the hole in the frame square and clip the nuts in behind!! they work a treat!!!

Just be real careful with the top two nuts. If they are too long, they will wear a hole in the fuel tank.

I like this idea. Those nuts are a PIA especially when doing field repairs, they knock off too easy and can fall in the muck. I was thinking of tack welding them in place, but the cage nuts sound easier...
