Classic Trials

By request as it covers too many of the other forums

  1. Started by rusty ken,

I found these photos while surfing for some pre65 info and thought they might be of interest; http://niclassicscramblesclub.com/gallery3/index.php/old-pictures/Ken-McClure-s-Collection/Trials. They are from events in Northern Ireland during the late '50s, but they include a few well known names and stars of yesteryear. Obviously the world has moved on in the last 60 years, but I would expect that many of the bikes in the photos would still have been in use up to our 'pre65' cut off? I wonder how many of these would be considered to be anywhere near competitive in todays pre65 events, and how many of us would consider building or bringing out a similar bike?

So, it seems that the big bike classic scene is dying. Question, what's the best twinshock to convert to a right foot gear change and left foot rear brake?

  3. Started by roadster,

This is a bit of a long shot; I wondered if any one remembers J O Wallis from Hereford, who was the first owner of my Norton 500T in 1952. The bike was supplied by the dealer Ashcroft of Thornbury who may have been trials bike specialists; does anyone remember them? I hope that I put this in the correct place. Rod

Hi all, hope to see some of you over the weekend riding around Cowcombe Woods near Stroud, I'll be there on the BSA. I've entered the Clubman route firstly because you can't change routes and secondly you can never predict how hard the Expert route will be especially in a Golden Valley Classic trial. After saying that I bet I backed the wrong horse :-( Maybe catch up for a beer after the trial?

  5. I am not sure if this little bike qualifies as a classic but it looks like a late 1970`s or early 1980`s bike to me I know of a cheap old Montese Cota 50 for sale but the seller does not know which year this ol bike is made. The bike starts and drives The bike is missing the rear fender and a side cover on the engine from what i can tell from looking at the pictures Any fellow member here that knows which year this bike was made? Is it original with disc brakes up front and a mono rear shock instad of 2 rear shocks? One shock absorber on each side of the bike? Also is this anything to buy? Is the bike original because the pictures i saw when i did…

Well done Somerton Classic, another great classic trial on Saturday and Sunday. The Mendip hills in the sunshine and a friendly crew at the helm. Sections to allow real bikes to show what they do best, don't see many pre-unit and rigid bikes these days so a joy to see - Ariels, Nortons, AJS's, Matchless as well as Greeves, Cub's, Bantam's, Sprite and C15's and c40's. With over 70 entries, let's hope more clubs keep true classic trials going for classic bikes.

Hi all, I found this forum while searching for information about Bultaco Alpinas. I have a chance to purchase a '74 350 Alpina 116. I had one of these back in the 70's and am really thinking about buying it. The problem is that I will have to sell my 1972 Honda TL 125 to make room for it. I'm just a new fan of trials and don't have many opportunities to compete. I read a thread on this site from a few years back and wondered if anyone had a new ideas/opinions about the alpine as a amateur trials bike? Thanks for any advice.

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I need some help. I'm fixing up a 1976 Kawasaki kt250, and the lights are burning out. I figured it would be a voltage regulator, but I'm not sure where, or if, it even has one. If I could just get some help from people who know more than me, that would be great.

  18. Started by wallo,

So just got the entry list for the Sam Cooper trial, and all I can say is "where have all the big bike gone?" I counted 4 out of an entry of 76. How come 2 out of the top 3 in the Pre 65 Scottish were Ariels and you always get a big turn out at the Talmag, do these bikes get wrapped up in cotton wool for the rest of the year?

Would any restorers give me a little guidance on a quote I have received for some chroming works from a company based in the UK. I wanted a set of swm mudguard stays and kickstart shaft chromed and have received a quote of stg 345 plus vat.. Owing to the fact I had some fork legs chromed last year for around 175 I thought this a tad excessive... or does this seem the going rate.. Thanks
