  1. Paul, I know how frustrating this can be. I have been associated with vintage bikes before they were vintage. Do appreciate your updates as too many threads leave you wondering what happened. Thanks Larry
  2. Good plan on carb swap, that should let you know where the problem lies. This is an interesting problem & as such old men like me enjoy trying to help. Keep us posted. Good luck. Larry
  3. Thanks for the answer, I had a Fantic 301 I think not sure of the model, but it had a PHBH carb and its main problem was flooding at the most awkward times, cured that with a mikuni. The lack of power you describe still sounds like ignition problems, timing or condenser, IMHO. Please keep us posted. Regards Larry
  4. Fantic 300, Is it running? Thanks, Larry
  5. Chappo, Have you had any luck? Please give us an update as it would be helpful to somebody down the road. Thanks Larry
  6. Greg, Did you get it going? I am sure we would all like to know. Regards, Larry
  7. Only my thoughts; Spark on the outside can be misleading compared to firing under compression. in my experience with points ignition and what you describe, try adding an automotive condenser under the tank, quick & cheap try. I take it was running after the new points & condenser ? Larry

    Montesa Cota 247

John, Looks mighty fine, great care & handling on your part. Regards Larry
  9. Fork hits tank bolt; I just like a little cleaner look than stock.. Regards, Larry
  10. d250b, Your engineering fella will understand what to do with the post, I use one inch matl. for the washers $ one half inch for the frame if my memory is still intact, the bolt hole thru the frame is about 10 mm, the width seems to vary from bike to bike. Have a nice day Larry
  11. Tank front bolt hits; Machine two alloy headed & threaded bushings of proper length, connect them with a short stud in the center of frame Two counterbored washers $ rubber washers for each side, 6m Phillips screws. Fasten tank in this manner, cant hit with fork leg. Rebuild looks spectacular. Good Luck Larry
  12. Barfy, You could possibly still have an air issue, you didn't say which caliper but as you know the back one can give a lot of grief. Good Luck. Larry
  13. Harry, I am pretty sure the Gasser has 6 gears. Larry
  14. Harry, The choke & the enrichining devise do the same. There is not enough room to elaborate on the terminology, it is simply a richer mixture. Cleaning out the rear muffler & repacking is a good idea, however you might remove it and give the bike a go and see if this helps, might be to noisy at this point though. Let us know how it goes. Larry
  15. Harry, The best plug for me is the Iridium NGK of equal heat range to which ever you choose. I seem to remember some recommendation from the SSDT pertaining to road use, running @ speed, applying the inrichining device. One would tend to think that trials jetting is a little lean. Best of luck. Larry
  16. Harry, The mixture is a bit rich but should not be the overheating cause. I have experienced the hot exhaust only at low speeds and at that time it was a bad plug. 2001 txt 280, these things act totally different than a Bultaco when they foul a plug. I don't know what speeds you are running but if this continues it will not live. You may well need to go up on main jet & or raise the needle. Finally put in colder plug. PS the hot oil smell is from the accumulation of oil in your silencers. Good luck. Regards Larry
  17. If it could be of any help, I find that the condenser we have used over many years, 1968 302 Ford. Larry

    Rear Brake Cam

Bondy, If the looseness doesn't cause binding then lube it lightly and go on down the road, but if you want to fix it properly then ensure the cam shaft is not worn and have a machinist bore & bush the backing plate to repair. Probably expensive. Larry
  19. Chappo, Be sure to ground the condenser body. I personally like the coil mounting bolt. Larry
  20. Tripp, Hope the PM reaches you as the message is to long and I type like an old fellow. Larry
  21. Greg, Many times it is the simple things that are over looked, just trace your kill switch wire to the coil and unhook it, this should be under the tank, not all that handy, hook up a new plug and ground it tightly to the jug, here you may need help, now kick the engine over, RED IS DEAD, BLUE or WHITE is GOOD. Two strokes only need FIRE, compression & fuel at the rite time. Per the post from huski, Fire. Good Luck Larry
  22. gregsta, Per your phase 5 you cant get a spark on the Montesa casing it would stand to reason that the Montesa has no fire. I would make sure first that you have the kill button completely out of the system, then if you cant get fire check all connections @ the coil and all grounds. Carbs usually don't mess up unless water or trash is present. Good luck Larry
  23. You need to let us know what models you have, and then we can help you decide what to do about the tanks As to the shocks if they are not leaking, use them until you cant stand it anymore then decide where you really want to be. The originals really aren't important to most, the main goal is get them up & running and riding them. I am sure you know the first three digits of the motor number will tell what they are. Larry
  24. Saw Miller, I think I can be of help with your woes. I am in the proximity of your location. Please E mail me. Larry
