  1. Woody, Do you recall the original (at least here) piece of pressed alloy front fork brace/fender mount on mod 92? All so had a 1 year old mod 80 with a broken Sammy two piece brace (the short version). Just a bit of trivia from old folks. Beautiful bikeTwinshock, & thanks guys for the good memories. Best regards Larry
  2. b40rt, Thanks for the post & link, quite nice lads, as Mick used to put it. Regards Larry
  3. Dave, So happy for you, those crank gears & the at least for all I know counter shaft sprockets can really give you fits. Much prefer keys & splines. Best of luck. Larry
  4. Chappo, The last issue I had with the primary gear was when main bearings were the issue, had to be replaced; puller not available. Used torch heat and rapped it sharply, sorry design popped off. Do not advocate this plan, but was advised by owner, it has to come off. Much better to come up with puller as per my above post. Good Luck Larry
  5. Dave; Thanks for the reply and sorry about your time constraints to have a bit of fun. I don't know but have to assume 247?? Cant remember but I assume the drive side threads are anti clockwise, I do recall the drive gear being a bother & requiring a special puller, there was a recent thread showing this puller. Found it! Montesa 348 Success Story ref. feetupfun post Help; johnmartin247, wobbler, kingscorpion & others. Regards Larry
  6. Your not an idiot, everybody has been there! Now think about a nice new throttle so the wife doesn't have an accident, and then you will have a new knot on your head! Regards, Larry
  7. If it is of any help to you it is difficult to measure venture size accurately using verniers, as they cant reach deep enough in the throat. Unless your carb is missing parts you can have a go with cleaning & setting the float to spec, carbs don't usually go to far away. Don't know about Chinese carbs, might be hard to source parts if ever needed. Good luck Larry
  8. Tripp; Thank you, our friendship is a source of great pleasure. When the mail brings the next package you can try the 627 Amal, and then get a Mikuni sorted. Your Friend Larry

    Bultaco

Hello all, my running mate and I just finished up on (74) mod 125 & (75) mod 151, these are of the early bored out 250 cases & therefor do not have a head steady, they have a very thin-wall liner and are known to leak causing the most frustrating time to sort. Regards Larry
  10. motopelli, I had one like the bike in the foreground a while back. turned the rear suspension link upside down, had to machine a little clearance, lowered the front stanchions an inch, made it a little easier for an old fella to get a leg over, also helped the nose bleed. Also replaced the PHBH carb. In support of 61ajs, in proper twin shock sections, dead throttle and no clutch. Regards Larry

    Vented Fork Caps

Mur, one thing you might try to calm the rebound, I had the same problem with a friend & pursang springs, was able to make him happy by changing to 30 weight oil in one leg. Doesn't cost much to try. Let us know how you get on. Larry

    Vented Fork Caps

Mur, for what its worth just took caps off 199. Small nut, down tight; washer; spring; thin washer with I/D to accommodate step and to cover 4 slots. Regardless of what the spring and washers do, if they don't hiss on compression the caps are not doing what they are supposed to do. Let them breathe! Some A models have a deflector in the bottom of the spring to alleviate the oil spray from the dampers. Regards Larry
  13. Everyone should experience timing a BUL at least 1 time as it is so much fun!! I still do it as I don't really find it necessary to set them often. The cam must be as smooth as possible, and whatever ignition, the case must be vented and not sealed. MIKE, The polished cases really set the bike off. Larry

    Vented Fork Caps

Mur, I don't remember for sure about the tightness, seem to remember when new, they are bradded slightly and not tightened up so as you thought, to allow them to breathe. I think but will check later that they work both ways. Had a chassis upside down not long ago and cleaned up two puddles, had not cleaned the caps, however not thinking there is any check valve. Will check one later and amend post as needed. Regards, Larry

    Vented Fork Caps

Mur, shouldn't think you would lose that much oil unless it was upside down. If you have the vented caps, you can turn the stanchions so the vent holes are towards the tank and you will be able to track the spray if there is any. Will try to help if possible. By the way what model do you have? Regards Larry
  16. Mike, when you replace the Bing and get it jetted spot on you should see an improvement in performance and usually greater fuel economy in my experience. Really a nice looking A model. Larry
  17. Bondy, I just looked at the plug in my 199, NGK BPR5EIX-11. We have used this plug for several years, it was recommended by a good friend. Have not had any issues since going this way at all. Regards Larry
  18. Overall thickness of original pack must be matched as close as possible. This is important! Especially on a pin clutch. Measure with proper tools. The only thing that does not change is the first plate is driven (earless). Whatever plate that is against the pressure plate does not matter. The Barnetts pack is usually about half a plate thinner in my experience. Larry

    Montesa Cota 247

Wobbler, good news on proper throttle, wish they were all that easy. Note the woes on the Bultaco page of saw miller. Have a nice day. Larry
  20. David, do let us know how you get on with your project and especially the nice paint on the tank. Super Job! Larry
  21. I have found that when fitting Barnett plates, by micrometer thickness of old clutch pack, and matching with 4 friction always and using only 4 springs, you must start as Woody says, an earless plate unless you really enjoy kicking with the clutch slipping. Steel clutches can give a hard way to go sometimes. Pin clutches can be tough. Good Luck Larry

    Montesa Cota 247

Have just been about where you are on the revving problem. It sounds like maybe base gasket or as I see a snout mount Mikuni, could be a rubber problem. Good luck & keep us posted. Larry
  23. Good job, certainly beats the machine time as I have done in the past. Might think of anti seize as stainless likes to stick together, could be a bit of a bother down the road. But I am sure you have already taken care of that. Bike really nice Larry

    199B Frame Colour
