I’ve had to replace the crank seals on all my Vintage OSSAs. Easy to do (unless issues taking the primary drive off). I have a crankcase leak detector setup (Moton Pro I think) that makes finding air leaks really easy. Generally, it will smell noticeably different if it is burning gearbox oil.

    Fuel use 280i

For whatever reason on my bike- after 100 hours or so I found the TPS setting was no longer at spec. Perhaps the idle stop was worn a bit or something like that. But when I check it I can see it is no longer correct. It only takes a minute to set and at least for me, really makes a difference on the off-idle running. I’ve changed to the BTWICE throttle body, and the idle seems more stable and perhaps the TPS isn’t changing as much. But if I connect the computer, I’ll always check it and adjust if not perfect. It is so easy. I like to hook up to the bike every so often and it takes me awhile to get 100 running hours anyway. but that has just been my experience. I don’t ride the Factory enough to get lots of hours, but it is just as touchy on the correct TPS setting. Mark

    Fuel use 280i

The TPS is VERY sensitive! If not right, it will certainly use more fuel and mine are ‘blurbly’ just off idle. I find I need to reset them about every 100 hours. I use the 4 sparking plug also, the temperature is a better match for my use. I ride my Explorer mostly (although I have not ridden it for awhile) and trail ride most of the time. Rarely do I compete in an actual trial. All are too far away, and driving 5-7 hours to ride 2 hours doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. I get pretty good mileage when the TPS is correct. Mark
  5. With my ‘super easy start’ (tiny 12V batter to activate fuel pump) it starts 1st kick when warm every time - IF I give it a good kick. when cold, 1 or 2. For me, it is picky on a good kick. My Beta 4T is completely different, it seems to like a slow ‘push through’ kick or it won’t start well at all.
  6. Did you check with ‘Trails and Tribulations’ in GB? https://trialstribulations.net/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=28&products_id=2701&zenid=mf3gl1dknsbl0dn6c0kjmg8p37
  7. I try to ride at least once a week. Usually I can do it all winter around here. Here was last week. The 4T has been working really well for me. No complaints, no problems. Just having fun! I know it looks goofy with the handguards and ‘elephant ears’. But my hands don’t get crushed and stay warmer. (Mt Baker in background)

I would also suggest moving the levers up more toward level. If they are too far down- you can’t reach them well when getting back over the rear. It is a little unusual at first to have them fairly level- but you get used to it.
  9. Wow. I have a 2016 300 4T with probably close to 200+ hours. It is MUCH quieter. Take a look at the other thread- Billy showed a rocker that was very warn causing a very noisy top end. Mark
  10. So you got all 6 bolts? Ha- just kidding, I now there are five. There is a circlip on the countershaft- no? I can’t remember. You may want to use a heat gun on the countershaft bearing area to help loosen? But no flame and not too hot. Mine has the fixer nut and once I got that off it came right out. (The original instructions didn’t mention that, so had me on the run a bit).
  11. I have not had anyone say they couldn’t open the file from Dropbox so far. Did you get a link from me? It is too large to send via email and since I’m in the States putting it on a USB drive or something would be slow and a bit expensive. PM/Email me and we can try my link, or come up with another solution. Mark
  12. It is a hardware addition. Very simple. A very small 12V LiPo battery is connected to a momentary switch. I choose to put it on the right handlebar, using a KTM style kill button. Installing it there means I take my hand off the throttle when pushing the button- so I don’t move the throttle when starting. That output from the switch is fed to the 12V + of the ECU connector. (- is connected all the time). So when the button is pushed, 12V is applied to the system, running the fuel pump for a second or two. At least for me, it makes for much easier starting (even better than the ‘easy start’) and also is a LOT easier if you run out of fuel. I posted a diagram here, I’ll find that and add the link. Mark
  13. I cannot read Italian (except musical terms) so perhaps this was answered above. Yes, the TPS is VERY sensitive and critical to have as correct as possible. I find I need to reset it about every 100 hours to keep the bike running properly. You must have the software and cable to set it.
  14. PM me and I can get you the software. I have the parts to make two more cables- but I have not gotten around to it. I’ll try to get on it and make sure they work etc. Mark
  15. My 2016 300 had the plastic cap (I bought it used). It worked, but just barely. I ditched it and bought the billet one for too much $$. But IT works great, easy to put on and off, I used a breather hose from the chainsaw shop (small hose).
  16. In general, email isn’t very useful to Lewisport. I find I need to call.
  17. Good to hear that worked. someone was building alloy OSSA Phantom tanks awhile ago. But I can’t find it anymore. If anyone knows a source please let me know.

    OSSA MAR 4 speed?

I recall the 5 speed crankcase is wider and the engine mounts are different. I certainly could be wrong- but I dont’ Think you can just put a four speed engine into a five speed frame without some changes. I’ve never seen a ‘Plonker’ but did have a four speed Stiletto and a four speed Pioneer. Mark

    Is Ossa still good?

I have two modern OSSAs- great bikes. As mentioned, some parts will start to be hard to find- many are standard trials stuff or GasGas parts fit (like the piston). I have a 15 300 Factory, the original owner sold it because he was new to trials and it just had too much power and snap. I fit a slow throttle, larger countershaft sprocket and usual run on the ‘rain’ setting. That calmed it down considerably, but it still has a LOAD of power and very light. I like them a lot, especially my Explorer. But I picked up a Beta 300 4T to use a bunch so I don’t get so many hours on the OSSA, I want to keep using it. Mark
  20. Good idea to replace if it started making noise. If the fan fails it will overheat quite quickly. And riding doesn’t help- since almost no air goes through without the fan. I missed your first post, but sounds like you figured it out easily. mark

    Would he make more?
  22. I re-read your original post and missed the ‘novice to intermediate level’. Do you mean trails that are similar to a novice or intermediate trials section? or just novice/intermediate trails (if you know what I mean). On the easy trails, it may get a bit tiring standing all the time and at least for me- I riding on the seat very much is not easy. I also put bar risers on mine, because when standing, it would hurt my kneck after several hours of riding (and standing 99%) of the time. If you want to sit and ride it...well I would highly suggest a much taller seat than the factory long range tank/seat. Even then I personally dont’ Like riding it sitting much at all. My OSSA Explorer has an excellent seat- but even that is hard to steer compared to standing. Does that make sense? If you were closer you would be more than welcome to come try my Beta and see how it would work for you. Mark (I’m right across the Straits from Victoria, BC)

I’d contact Kieth Lynas at OSSA Planet. http://www.ossaplanet.com/ Make sure you carefully shim everything when reassembling. They are picky about that.
  24. I’ve been using trials bikes for trails for a number of years. My OSSA Explorer is the best I’ve ridden for that- but I’m not riding it as much since no longer available and I dont’ Want to put a ton of hours on it. Currently I’m riding a Beta 300 4T with the long range tank/seat. The 4 stroke gets great fuel economy, super easy to start (as long as you don’t kick it hard or fast) and very similar engine response to the 2T. Except for the engine braking- wich I quite like on the steep descents. I can barely ride it sitting down- the only time I use the seat is on gravel road sections or in something with a ton of brush (so I can’t see obstacles) or something where I have to ‘paddle’ (low limbs with gnarly terrain combined). I find the trials tyres work great in almost all cases- deep, loose gravel isnt’ very fun (but not too great with knobbies either) and if the skid plate isn’t hitting, it does well in the deep mud. I run around 3-4 psi rear and maybe 5 psi front. Same on all my off-road bikes. My AJP ‘Ultrapasser’ came with trials tyres F/R, once I ditched the Pirelli on the rear and installed the ‘Tubliss’ system so I can run super low pressures- it works great. But I ran a front/rear trials tyres on my KTM 300 also. I would consider the 4T for trail riding- it is a bit heavier, but still pretty light for a trail bike. One part I don’t like, is the low air filter. Deeper water crossing can be an issue. The OSSA has a very high air filter- right behind the headstock. So it has much more depth and also stays a LOT cleaner. But that is the nature of the beast. I’ve put almost 100 hours on the Beta since I got it- I very rarely ride a trials event (too far away from where I live, I did one last year) but great for tight single track. Still works well for smoother two-track, but not very fun trying to go quickly on rough stuff. Mark

I’ve found I need to adjust and reset the TPS about every 100 hours to keep it in top running form.
