  1. I have gone back to the book " Four-Stroke Finale " to check some engine facts and am more confused than when I started. I understand the 1976 TL250 and the 1981 RTL 360 but between the two I get confused. What capacity or capacities were the short stroke and long stroke engines? It looks like all the long stroke engines were 4 valve but I cannot be sure it looks like the short stroke engines were 2 valve? Can anyone provide any clarity?
  2. This may have been asked before. I have heard that some riders have modified TLR frames to steepen the steering head angle by cutting and lengthening the frame top tube under the tank. The obvious place to do this is near the front between the headstock and the gusset plate. If anyone has done this, how much did they insert ( I have heard 5 or 6 mm being suggested ), how simple was it to do and did it produce the expected result? The other modification has been covered before which is to move the footrests back and down, again any experiences on this would be welcome, thanks.
  3. Big John Do you know how the organisers will treat tubed or tubeless tyres running without tubes but having multiple air balls fitted. This has been done recently to remove the risk of punctures. Notron
  4. I had a similar problem a few years ago on my TLR250, they are 20 years old, I MIG welded it and no problem since. It gets a hard life being used mainly in modern bike trials.
  5. Woody if this works it should show the content off the original post WoodyApr 9 2005, 08:20 PM Anyone know whether it is possible to buy a new camshaft for the Seeley Honda? Mine has 'flats' on the tips of the lobes so is no good. I know it is possible to get it reprofiled but I'd rather get a new one if possible. As I understand it the profile is different on the Seeley from XLI85 and other engines so although it is possible to fit another cam, it may mess up the slow running of the engine. I will try the usual sources such as Gordon Farley, David Silver etc. next week, but just wondered if anyone may know of a specific source, or even whether they are, or were ever available. If not I'll have to get it reprofiled. In which case does anyone know the number of Joy Cams - can't find it anywhere myself. Also, does anyone know of a piston that will fit and where to get it from. I've looked on the Wiseco site and can see that there are pistons available for bikes with the same bore/stroke such as oversize pistons for ATC200, XL200, XR200 etc. but not sure about the compression ration of any of these. I have heard of a TLR200 piston being used so that is an option. Any help will be appreciated. Griffiths of WalesApr 14 2005, 09:00 AM Woody, Does your camshaft have a bearing/bush fitted to the side opposite the cam chain sprocket? Mine has a solid bush fitted and I reckon there is about 0.005" clearance between the I/D of the bush and the O/D of the camshaft. Oh..by the way, are you Stephen Hole of 'Hope' fame?...if you are watched you many times riding down here in the St Davids. Best regards, Mark. MartinMApr 14 2005, 10:41 AM Think the chap you are talking about in the Isle of Man who bought the Seeley spares is called John Quaye (01624 853031). Martin WoodyApr 14 2005, 03:52 PM Mark, it does have a bush fitted but it is ok, it is the lobes which are worn on mine. No I'm not Woody Hole, I'm Dave Wood from Brum and unfortunately don't possess half of his trials riding ability either.... Regards 200 cams, a friend has a 200 engine out of a Paris-Dakar style Honda 200 with electric start. The cam on this has a proper bearing on it, not a bush and the electrics are on the crank not the cam so there are some differences on the 200 engines to watch out for. Thanks Martin, that's the name I was trying to remember. Not sure how much stuff he has but I've heard he isn't prone to letting any of it go. I've managed to find someone else on the IOM who also has a Seeley and who knows John, so he is going to ask a few questions for me. From what I've been told though, there was very little in the way of mechanical components in what he bought so not too hopeful but you never know. I've heard there are about 10 Seeleys on the IOM and John Quaye has 6 of them.
  6. Woody, I found in a previous topic a comment from you, I think, about a friend of yours who fitted an electric start version of a Honda engine to a Honda TLR200. I have a friend who due to injury struggles to kick start his TLR200 and I wondered how the conversion worked. There appears to be a XL200 Paris-Dakar with electric start that may work. The plan would be to use a combination of XL cases and starter system with TLR gears, barrel, cylinder head and cam. How did your friend get on, what were the problems? Thanks
  7. Does anyone know the numbers of the tapered roller steering head bearings fitted to the recently manufactured replica frames such as for James?
  8. Boofont If you are interested Wymondham club have an Eastern Centre trial on September 9th about 10 miles from you at Middleton. It is in a working carstone quarry and if we want we can normally mark out all the sections on rocks. Very unusual for the flat boring Eastern Centre.
  9. Try Chris Edwards at The Trials Park, Corton, 07889 42255, trialspark@aol.com
  10. I can get to all the files except the saturday results, is there a problem with these thanks
  11. Big John What number are you and what are you riding? I am 152 so if you are near be careful, knowing my bike it could be rotovated or flattened. see you up there Notron
  12. ISBN 0-9512523-2-1, if this helps
  13. I am trying to improve the carburation on my TLR 250 and want to try different pilot jets. It has the standard Keihin carb but the closest jets Allens Performance can come up with are N424-24-size which do not fit. Has anyone found a source of alternative jets to try or even a direct replacement carb.
  14. There was a WOFTAM Superstars TRIALS Team in the early eighties which even had embroidered badges. If this works correctly it should be my Avatar, I may even take the badge to Scotland this year for a ride around.
  15. Wymondham club in the Eastern Centre runs two trials a year at Middleton about five miles from King's Lynn, the sections are mainly rocky in a quarry, the next one is April 22nd. I think Norwich Vikings have lost their trials land near King's Lynn.
  16. Big John I liked your comments about my riding ability but not sure about the number of years ago. The more difficult bikes to ride do need younger or better riders to do them justice, for example Mick Andrews riding the Douglas in Scotland and Matthew Neale riding it in the Talmag. I think the rigid class in Scotland will be very competitive this year, the Norton is completely stripped for a rebuild before Scotland and to build a frame jig for a replica bike for later, for when I get really old. It is a shame the entries are closed as perhaps you could have volunteered to ride the Douglas this year.
  17. Big John, not ridden much since Scotland, too much work. The dampers are not really important they are on a Majesty I hardly use and I lent them to a mate to use for one event on a C15, as on a quick check they looked the closest match of any I had. I have heard mixed feedback on the new betors so decided to give them a miss. Still not long to Scotland again, see you there, not surprising no offers to ride the other bike. Notron
  18. I am trying to rebuild a pair of betor dampers which I think came from a late Bultaco 340. Does anyone know the amount of oil and viscosity, and if there is any chance of getting new seals?
  19. Question probably been asked before but does anyone know where a 4RT workshop manual or parts list with diagrams is available on line. Thanks

    Tlr Clutch

I am sure this has been asked before but there are many problems with the TLR clutch such as rapid wear, clutch slip and jerky operation. What experience is there of modifications or alternative parts to improve it? Are there any alternative plates and springs that work well? In particular what oils have worked well? I already use the Honda CG125 anti-jerk kit.
  21. Big John, close but no cigar, year and rider correct but it was a 450
  22. Big John, not bad, answers correct but your additional info was wrong, mick rode 250 Yamaha ENU29L in 1973 which was his first yamaha year, I will post a photo of this Yamaha in a few days time when I am back home.
