Thats great Andy, what other mods have you made to your bike?
-
Thanks AtomAnt, the way the fishing one works is the sponser runs it all, they put up good prizes and they also have 1 of the match fishing monthly mags involved.
The mag runs a page or 2 every month with the latest updates and points, the sponser gets it name all over it, its like a nice big advert for them, the only mag that runs it picks up a few more sales becuse anyone thats in the comp wants to see how they are doing.
The club secretarys just send the results to the sponser, they add it all up and send them to the magazine, it works well.
All we need now is a sponser and a friendly magazine/website to get the ball rolling.
Anglers love it because in effect you are competing against everyone in the country, without the expense of travelling.
To be honest with the results that get posted on here, it wouldnt take much to have a "Trials Central Clubman of the year" just someone to spend a few hours every week sorting through the results, a few simple rules and it would be so easy.

Thanks for the replys.
I've fitted a slow action throttle, retarded the timing and fitted 9/42 gearing, and it feels great.
I seem to have more time, i dont have to worry about the clutch, im not stalling it as often and it feels much nicer to ride, plus theres plenty of power there when i need it, im much happier with it now, thanks.

The fishing world runs a similar sort of thing. The basic rules are, the club has to enter the competition, it has to run 10 matches a year and there has to be at least 30 people fishing each match, the top 3 in each match score points, the results are added up throughout the year and at the end 1 winner becomes the UK club champion, its a very competitive thing and winning it is about as high an award as the normal club angler could ever possibly win, it has a big tackle company as sponser, a similar thing could work well in our world.
Or how about 1 end of year trial held somewhere central, winning your club championship gets you an entry, Clubman of the year, has a nice ring to it.
-
That looks great, let us know how different the bike feels with it. please.
Did you just use the RD350 manifold, or the reed block as well?
-
I'm not bothered about trophys (good job really, the way I ride) but if i ever did win a club championship i wouldnt mind having the Number 1 on my bike at every one of that clubs trials the following year.
And to answer the other questions on this thread; i'm happy with what i've got but an extra few inches would be nice lol.
-
Hi, i'm new to modern trials bikes, i've got an 04 250 and to be honest its just to much for me. I'm spending more time picking it up than i am riding it.
I've been looking through a lot of posts on here and there is a lot of info on taming the 290, would these mods work for the 250 as well?
What im contemplating doing is, fitting a slow action throttle, retarding the timing, and perhaps changing the gearing 10/40 at the moment.
Is there anything else you can suggest or am i better off swapping it for a Scorpa 125/175.
I realise my riding style might not help, i cant get into this on and off the clutch all the time, partly because i''ve never ridden like that and partly due to an old wrist injury that has me in a lot of pain if i do use the clutch a lot. (plus im over 40 and to old to change my riding style)
If possible it would be great if it would behave like my TY, but with much more power when i felt i needed it and of course better suspension and brakes. I do like the bike i just want to smooth the power out a bit, is it possible?
Scott.

So modern forks and brakes would be ok then? This is the one thing that really seperates trial bikes, the brakes and suspension on a standard late 70's bike was just so much better than anything available in say 1963, just in the same way that the brakes and suspension on modern bikes is so much better than anything 15yrs ago. If i put my Ty engine in my Sherco frame, i would have a fairly reasonable bike that would (with a decent rider) beat a lot of people.
Let people do what ever they want to everything else but leave the brakes and suspension as they were
How would a Majesty work in the twinshock class?
The first Majesty's were a TY with a modified frame, under those rules they wouldnt be allowed?
Only later versions with the purpose built frame would be allowed?
As most people in the 60's modified there bike themselves, taking a hacksaw to the frame was for most the first mod.
The choice of aftermarket parts was just non existent then.
How about:
Standard suspension, brakes (new pad materials only), and a period carb? I'm sure many people in the 60's had tried putting a larger carb from a different model on.

Ok here goes:
A section is a random set of gates all leading to the end cards, its up to you which route you choose, it gives each rider the choice of which parts of each section he wants to attempt.
3 different gates, 2pts(green) 5 pts(blue) and 10pts(red). In a picture with the article it shows a large rock, the 2pt gates are to one side being the easy (or novice route) the 5pt gates are the other side (cant see in the pic what the obsticle is but its going to be a bit harder than the 2pt gates) and if you go over the rock thats the 10pt gate.
The idea is the rider with the most points wins.
The points is a bit confusing as you get 2 5 or 10 for each gate you pass, 15 for a clean, 7 for a dab, 4 for 2 dabs and zero points for 3 or more dabs.
The sections are marked out with tape either side, go out the tape and its a failed section, all points are lost for exceeding 1 min, falling off,a stationary dab, crossing your own tracks or going outside the section limit.
The thinking is that its great for a novice as they can ride the green cards only, but if they feel confident they can try a blue gate at any time in any section to pick up a few more points, the experts will ride the red normally and everyone else will pic a mixture.
As a novice it does appeal, a nice fairly easy trial but i've got the option to try a bit harder section when i want, if i look at a section for say experts with 3 big steps i just might be able to manage 1 but not do all 3, in this type of trial i could try just the one then continue with the green cards.
One thing that does make it a bit easier for observers is that all they are looking for is a dab, not trying to work it out if someone has stopped or gone backwards etc just dabs, but trying to work out the points is for now a bit of a headache.
Scott.

As a novice I think this is a wonderfull idea, seems to cater for everyone from raw novices to keen hoppers.
Do you think any club in the UK might give it a go?
The scoring seems a bit strange, perhaps that might have to be changed,
Whats everyones opinion on it? I think its great and would happily enter if we had them here.
Scott.
If your sat there thinking "what is he on about" read this months YOU HAVE USED WORDS OR A PHRASE WHICH ARE NOT PERMITTED ON THIS WEBSITE. PLEASE DELETE YOUR POST/TOPIC. DO NOT TRY TO CIRCUMVENT THE FILTERS IN PLACE ON THIS WEBSITE.
Sorry Andy if i've posted this off the official TM thread but this has to be worth a thread on its own.

Thank you all for your replies.
My mates bike must have 10mm sticking through the yokes as i can see 1 groove about 5mm above the yoke, I have noticed when we try uphill sections my bike does tend to wheelie more than his, which often ends up with me struggling to get the front down before i loop it, i just put it down to different riding styles, it might be but i'll set my forks the same as his and see if that makes any difference.
Thanks again,
Scott.
-
Just noticed today my forks are flush with the top yoke (04-250) but my mates bike (05-250) there is about 15-20mm protruding through the top yolk.
So are they both right? Was that a difference between the 04 and 05 models? Or is 1 wrong?
Scott.

Hopping, bouncing, balancing etc is very skilfull, i love watching people do it, it looks good and it shows great control, but on the other hand its also great watching a skilfull rider pick his way through a section, never stopping but using his skills to position the bike for the next obsticle, I cant do neither.
But as sections get tighter and tighter so in the end you have to hop or your never going to get round, what happens then? Are we going to turn up for a trial and tick which boxes on the application:
Hopping novice
Hopping green
Hoppping expert
Non hoppping novice
Non hopping green
Non hopping expert
Divide all that by Expert, clubman, veteran, Pre 65, twinshock etc etc you going to end up with more classes than riders, there will be so many different coloured flags on each section most people will just get lost.
Theres no real answer we all have 'our' way that we want to ride, but at the end of the day its down to the people that set up and organise the trials, if you dont like the way its run then vote with your feet and go elsewhere.
I 5 on most sections so its not going to effect me, lol.

Yes im sure they are standard shocks, i have replaced them with 13.5 Betors and the back end looks to high now.
-
They might be different points for mounting the rear shocks to lay them down more, a popular mod at the time.
Scott.

Yes a big dissapointment, luckily I bought it from a local dealer who really went out of his way to get it right for me, he got me a used 175 barrel and head had it rebored, new piston kit etc, 1 of the fins on the head was broken so they welded a new one on, once it was painted you cant tell, excellent service.
Julian at Triple-D if your reading this thanks again.
Scott.
-
Mine has a 525 frame/engine number if that helps, what didnt help was the previous owner had fitted a 125 barrel on it!!
Scott.
-
Standard TY175 shocks when measured with the adjuster in the 3rd (middle of 5) position is 12.5 inches centre to centre, just checked in now I have 1 in my kitchen (dont ask)

Im not a teacher but i'm finding i get a few job application forms returned to me with text talk in them.
I'll have to share this one, on a recent application form the answer to the question:
Where did you hear about this vacancy?
The hopefull candidate answered:
"I found the form on a table at Accident &Emergancy"

Good topic, if your perhaps looking for a point of view from a novice then i can help.
Im new to Trials but not trials bikes, new to this forum but not forums in general, i'll explain.
Many years ago my mates had trials bikes TL's Beamish Cotas etc, i had an old Greeves Scottish horrible villiers engine went much beter when i put an XL125 motor in it, I never competed but enjoyed going along and loved playing around on the bikes, it was always something i fancied doing and 20 odd years later i now have the time and money.
Got serous about doing trials in Aug last year I now own a TY 175 and a 250 Sherco, i found this site by accident and liked it so ive stayed around, im on here most nights but just reading and the occasional post, so far competed in 3 trials so im about as novice as you can get. I dont feel theres much i can contribute to this site other than reading posts and asking simple questions that most people on here asked many years ago, i suppose most novices feel the same way.
2 of my mates have also just bought bikes we have all got into this together and i know both of them read this forum regular but never post.
If anyone want a novices opinion on something then i'll reply but other than that theres not a lot i can post.
Having used many other forums its the same thing where ever you go, a die hard handfull of posters and a few chipping in now and then, the one thing i will say is this is one of the better run forums that i've used and after 10yrs on the net thats a fair few.
Andy runs it well and fairly and it doesnt seen to attract the idiots that ruin so many other forums.
Other than that i cant say anything else, hope this answers the original question.
Scott.

Only had my bike a few weeks now and with teperatures dropping just wondered do modern bike have antifreeze in them? It gets very cold in my garage i dont want to find a burst pipe on my bike.
Only ever had 1 watercooled bike that was a CX500 many many years ago, cant remember if i ever put any anti-freeze in that.
Scott.
04 Sherco incase you were wondering.
-
Not sure about that but the TY175 barrel just bolts straight on,
Scott.
