Wasnt sure which forum to post this so i thought this one gets the most views.
I came across this website which might interest a few people here, lots of old bikes, Trials, Motocross and even road and race bikes plus plenty of old adverts.
I appologise if this is a well known site, anyway click here just keep scrolling down.

Have you got any pics of the mould or your wooden master? I'm sure a lot of people here (including me) would like a full blow by blow account of how you did it, it looks excellent, great job.

Where about in South Cumbria?
There a 4 local clubs the hold trials all within an hours drive of South Cumbria.
I can help you with a few places where you can go to practise.
Which Trial did you stumble across?
If you read this in time there is another one tomorrow 11m start. Lakes grass track club, go to junction 36 M6, go straight over as though you were going to Kirby Lonsdale, then at the little roundabout turn left down the A6070 it is down that road just look for little flags and a field full of vans.

They all sound ok, you could try giving Birketts a ring on 01229 716806 he should be able to help or offer a bit more advice.

Is your air filter blocked?
What size jets are in the carb?
What position is the needle in?
How many turns out is the air screw?
-
Thanks, is there a website for Cotswold?
-
Great pics, thanks.
The John Bliss bikes, any more details?
-
Sorry I cant understand what that site is saying but now i see it i realise it isnt as straight forward as i thought.
-
Ok thanks, its just your diagram was just a little bit confusing as to which way you had turned it, perhaps arrows might have been better.
No, the piston moves 60mm that is its stroke, as it moves fully up and down for every revolution of the crank. 1 revolution equals 120mm of piston movement 60mm up 60mm down, thats how 2 strokes work, so if its moving 120mm for 360deg of revolution then every 3deg of revolution the piston must move 1mm
-
Copemech, i've looked at your pics and you seem to be moving the backing plate clockwise (from your pic) if you want to retard the ignition you rotate the backing plate anticlockwise, it would seem your advancing it not retarding it.
See here or here
-
Thats exactly the same as my 04 250 was before I changed it, there were no marks on the paint on the flywheel nut to make me think it had been off before.
-
Sorry I just dont get this at all, how on earth can there be unburnt fuel?
If you retard/advance the ignition all you are actually doing is igniting the fuel at a slightly different time, take the 2.9 for example;
The 2002 fires 3.8mm BTDC
The 2003 fires 3.0mm BTDC
Does one burn more fuel than the other? NO they both burn the same amount only one compresses it a bit more before its ignited.
With a 60mm stroke, moving the timing 3deg will change the firing by 1mm (the piston travels 120mm for each revolution) 360 deg divided by 120mm = 3. So every 3deg the flywheel/crank rotates the piston will move 1mm
The 2000 and 2001 290's both fired 2.7mm BTDC
Fitting a 1mm thick base gasket will have the same effect as altering your timing by 3deg and will also lower your compression as the piston isnt going up as high

All very interesting, but as someone who's new to Trials it would be nice to see some consistency, every other form of motorsport seems to be able to do why are we different?
3 of my local clubs mark the easy route with a blue flag on the left, white on the right, the other club who had there 1st trial of the year a couple of weeks ago had blue on the right white on the left, caught a few people out on the first lap.
Something a basic and as important as this should be specified in the ACU rules, should'nt it?
White = Easy
Blue = Hard
Red = Expert
If every club followed a pattern like that, you could turn up for a trial anywhere in the country and know instantly what route you were on, that would make more sense.
Imagine the situation if road races were run to a similar thing, at Oulton Park a yellow flag means slow down, at Mallory its a blue flag, at brands its orange with yellow spots etc etc.
If its confusing to us how must it be to the odd spectators or the guy who's thinking of starting and comes along for a look?

Honda normaly spend the most money in F1, with Toyota also throwing a lot at it as well, seen any F1 results recently?
-
You could try here and fit a 41 tooth rear.
-
Never had the chance to try one, but i'll put that on my 'to do' list, thanks.
I forgot about the 250 i was just thinking 125/175 when you said scorpa.
-
Yes I have had a little play on the Scorpa 125, and yes its very nice, and to be honest if someone offered me a straight swap for my Sherco i would take it.
The only thing that does let them down is they do appear a bit cheap and nasty in the build quality (the frame before anyone comments).
I would prefer a 2 stroke but you cant have everything.

As one of the people who has posted asking and modified my bike, heres my answer:
A standard 290 (or 250) is good enough with the right rider to win any trial in this country (except WC round) 95% of the people riding them arent good enough, so the bike is changed/moddified to suit that person and the way they ride, if the vast majority of riders cant use the bike to its limit, why not tame it down a bit?
For a lot of people (the over 40's) they have come back to Trials after many years away, modern bikes and the way the power is delivered is nothing like what they may have been used to. Me for example, I have ridden TY's, Beamish, Cota's and TL's 20 odd years ago and got used to them, now trying a modern bike i just cant get used to the way it goes, doesnt suit my style, what should i do? Practise more? dont have the time so the easiest option is to make the bike more like what im used to, thats they way i think and im sure many others feel the same.
What would be nice would be a modern bike, with its great suspension and brakes but with an engine like a old TY250 in its power delivery, but no-one makes anything like that, so we all buy whats available and change it to suit our needs.
-
Hi Neo, How? Can you explain why it might start to overheat, i might be having a blonde moment but i cant think why this would happen.
-
I've just done this on my 04 250, I retarded it as far as it would go, much better now but to be honest its a 10-15min job, just fully retard it then ride it, then slowly advance it till you find the right point.
-
Birketts will do that for you.
Scott.
-
For Birketts site click here it doesnt get updated much (if at all) but the contact numbers are there and they are very helpfull.
Scott.
-
Try Here
I've got their Nickel plating kit, it does a good job.
Scott.
-
Can anyone explain the mods for the 175 version, was that just a cut frame and new bash plate or did it go further like the 250.
Scott.
-
Was this actualy done? I'm not sure to me it just looks like the extra clearance is due to having the bottom frame rails removed, perhaps someone can enlighten us?
Scott.
